After giving the mee pok a good tossing, I find the bowl a little dry. It tasted fine actually but I like my noodles saucy so, I scooped some soup in. Unfortunately, that compromised the flavors and I had to add in the soy sauce and chili padi.
I still enjoy this style of noodles tossed in black sauce coupled with fried crispy onions and some leafy greens.
Somehow this felt close to the wa kueh I had when i was young, and really had the taste of nostalgia. Firm and slightly sticky, with good rice and slight yam fragrance in the kueh. The soup was slightly peppery-sweet and herbal. The fish sausage was quite nice and crispy and pig skin was really gelatinous and soft. The meat balls and pork belly were fresh, bouncy and tender too. But the kway chap curled up and a bit clumpy.
The chicken itself was tender and moist, while the rice was firm yet plump. Everything was seasoned just right, with the chicken sitting in a light sauce that wasn't sweet, while the chili sauce was neither too garlicky nor acidic.
