Viva La Pasta Restaurant

iStay Hotel 96, Jalan Rangoon 10400 George Town Pulau Pinang Malaysia

Set within the heart of George Town, in a classy boutique hotel - iStay Hotel - we are Viva la Pasta, a small Café with humble roots, serving Italian dishes and a little bit of this and that.

With a name like Viva La Pasta, one would expect to see a heavy Italian fare in this newly opened restaurant. It is housed within the new budget hotel- iStay Hotel in the heart of Georgetown. Step in the cafe and you will be pleasantly amazed by how cozy the place is. While every effort was made to ensure the place lives up to the classy Italian theme but we did not think the Italian element was strong enough. In fact, we spotted a wallpaper with Chinese characters. On the menu, it offers quite a wide variety of Italian fare, ranging from Antipasto, Pizza, Pasta, Grills and even classic Italian desserts. Very wallet-friendly price points but as far as authenticity is concerned, we thought the flavors have been localized to suit the local audience.

Here comes the champion! Soft, warm brownies topped with homemade salted duck egg ice-cream, caramelized bananas and drizzled with caramel sauce. At first I thought the ice-cream would taste funny but it was THE BOMB! They serve set lunch ranges from RM14.50 to RM20.90, inclusive of soup of the day, main course and beverage. Here comes their signature ice cream for dessert! Salted duck egg ice cream. Yes, you saw that correctly - it is salted egg ice cream with actual salted duck egg bits! Ice cream is special indeed but I doubt it would not be everyone's preference especially when one is expecting the taste of a real sweet dessert.

The unusual Duck Lover Platter of Trio offers the duck chowder with bread stick, smoked duck on toast with tomato cilantro salsa and a Thai-style duck roll. Served with pieces of duck meat and button mushroom, the chowder boiled with vegetables was creamy enough. This appetizer with a wonderful interplay of flavors and textures is well worth a try.

oh do you know that the jelly is made in the coconut itself? unlike how we make our konnyaku jelly where we pour the mixture into moulds and let them chill and set. here at Joez Coconut, the coconut (outer husk removed) is first roasted in the oven and then chilled in cooler room. and that’s how the jelly formed from within! ingenius innit? no addictive or artificial chemical is added so the coconut bought must be kept in refrigerator and is best to consume within 3 days.

However, I kinda have to see eye to eye with him on the richness of cheese factor on the array made available as this cutely cow-themed café. If you still prefer the presence of rice in your main meals, then Farmer's Favourite (RM 17) is a worthy consideration. There is no better time to enjoy a good magical frozen dessert in a place like Malaysia with summer lasts all year long. Penang has no shortage of good desserts but we sure would not mind a new addition to the Penang cafe-dessert scene. The Craftisan is a new kid on the block and has just had its grand opening in early July 2017. Housed on the first floor of Soul Cafe, The Craftisan is an Ice Cream parlor that focuses on Gelato-inspired sweet treats. It gets points for the inspired creativity- for infusing Tea into their Ice Cream. The selection is full of Asian-leaning flavors- from refreshingly light Jasmine, Matcha to bolder ones like Tie Kuan Yin (Chinese Oolong Tea) and occasionally exotic delights like Durian Ice Cream. The cafe is brilliantly spaced and brightly lit, with clean and comfortable couches forming the homey-intimate atmosphere. It is a place best to chill out with friends over some sweet treats (if you do not mind the slightly higher price points).

Barely a week old, Matcho Cafe is an exceptional-odd one, not only that it occupies first floor of a vacant shop, the name (which sounds like Macho) is contrary to the femininity of the place. Pink is obviously the favorite color here- from the signage to the wall... even its signature dish ("Pink Toast"). But the quirky atmosphere has a strangely welcoming vibe, probably due to the well-arranged plants and neat-tidy setting. The soft launch menu is small, featuring some Toasts and Sandwiches; not exactly a place for a proper meal but more than decent enough for a casual snack or gathering.

A dish not to be missed by Chocolate lovers. The dessert plate gathered everything chocolaty... starting from the nutty Chocolate Brownie and creamy Mascarpone.... to Chocolate Ice Cream and Shards. The Mermaid's Signature Stingray has bold flavors and might be a little overly bold on its own but perfectly well over a spoon of Rice. The edges were carefully grilled to a crisp while the inner flesh remains its moist. Any order with the Signature Stingray will be served with a portion of the quintessential refreshing Chili dip. It was good but we were not blown away. For a Western-twist, we had Grouper Steak with Home-made Pesto Sauce and it was served with Mashed Potato and Corn Niblets. The thickly cut Fish possessed the most satisfying meaty-bite but the Pesto Sauce was a little too heavy on the seasoning... it would be better if they could reduce the salinity. If you are neither a fan of the old-school Sambal sauce nor the vegetal Pesto, you may opt for Garlic Butter... which will be served with Wedges and Salad.

Not too sure if it meant to be a hipster spot, Le Cafe does not have a big and clear signage, there's a small one at the side door (smaller than its window) though. It occupies a corner lot at Bricklin Road, a stone's throw distance away from the no-through road of Jalan Tye Kee Yoon and GAMA Supermarket. The interior decor is minimalist with a little industrial finishing, at the end of the cafe is a comfortable space most suitable for hipster-portraiture shots. Le offers a small Toast-focused menu in the mornings and snacks with alcohols for the rest of the days. In the evenings, visitors may opt to chill out at the al-fresco alley right next to the cafe. It may be a fun place to hangout or for a cup of drinks but we thought the food menu was a little less-exciting...

A.Maze Restaurant

63A, Jalan Nagor 10050 George Town Pulau Pinang Malaysia

A Maze, the brain child of Chef Wei, is a rather small restaurant, sitting only 8 pax per night, however this allows for a rather intimate affair as you will be seated Chef side as he guides you along course by course. Located in the heart of George Town, Penang. Serving Alternative Cuisine Chef Wei draws inspiration from the vibrant backdrop of the island he resides in, from it’s rich heritage and culture to the interesting produces that are found in and around this area, working with the seasons, a new course of meal is served every month. Pulling apart, reconstituting, reinterpreting, reinventing and innovating, A Maze’s ambitions are to break expectations, challenge conventions and leave you lost in wonderment on a culinary experience. There are no menus and no ordering here, we ask that you bring an open mind and an appetite, and allow Chef Wei to bring you on a journey a spoonful at a time.

  • kenhuntfood.com
  • 2016-12-09 00:00:00+00:00
Modernist cuisine or Molecular Gastronomy might not be new to the world but it's definitely something to range over, particularly for Penangites. Innovation is a critical element when it comes to a modernist kitchen- not only that the Chef must change the customary way one would prepare and present the dish but the Chef must bring a change to how diners experience the food either. Adventurous eaters can make their way to the small alley at Nagore Square (where all the bars and small little shops located); A.Maze occupies a strategic corner right next to the vacant land; from outside, the restaurant suggests a nary of information on what it is about to serve, inside... there are only 8 seats arranged snugly facing a small kitchen manned by the Chef-Owner Chef Wei. The very young and talented Chef honed his culinary skills from overseas and had had working experience in Michelin-starred restaurants. A.Maze serves "Omakase" which literally means "leave it to the Chef", the menu is not informed to diners and it relies entirely on "trust" but Chef Wei is not a one-trick pony- diners' sense of taste is not the only thing that changes here... the "Omakse" menu switches once a month and it depends on the seasonal offering. Thanks to Chef Wei, we had the opportunity to join him in his extraordinary gastronomical journey.

The server introduced their Famous Laksa Cik Umi with aplomb so we decided to try it out. The serving was large and the soup was pretty thick (thicker than the usual Assam Laksa). But it had all the essential columns ticked- sour, savory, spicy and a hint of sweetness (from the Shrimp paste). The condiments were spot on either but if I had to comment, it would be the texture of the noodles... which I thought they could be a little springier. Equally delectable was the Nasi Kacang, a serving of oiled Rice with 2 types of curries. Amazing flavors but we were not over-whelmed by the dish.

Not to miss out Malaysian's all time favourite Nasi Lemak, which is served with a piece of fried chicken marinated with galangal and mixture of spices that yields a subtle aromatic taste, along with delicious sambal, anchovies and peanut. Another signature here would be their Famous Laksa Cik Umi, which is a blend of Chinese and Malay cooking with a balance of sweetness and spiciness.

Penang's Japanese Dessert House

  • kenhuntfood.com

Tucked away from the bustling Penang Road, Snow story & Chef De Cuisine is probably one of the most "international" cafes in Penang... with a partnership consists of more than 3 nationalities. It started off with Snow Story, a shaved ice-focused Japanese dessert parlor manned by a Japanese proprietor (the wife is a local Penangite) and recently, joined by a couple from Hong Kong, who runs Chef De Cuisine. Snow Story offers a small dessert menu but the variety assures authenticity- everything is home-made and that includes the colorful sugar syrup, all made using natural ingredients like fruits and vegetables. For main, turn to Chef De Cuisine; the Michelin-starred restaurant trained Chef offers a unique range of Western dishes... with a delightful Asian touch. While quality is above average, the prices are lower than expected. The only setback is the limited seating, it can be a great spot to hold small lunch meetings or gathering otherwise.

Chicken is easily one of the most common dishes in most restaurants but good chicken leaves deep impression to diners, especially when it hits all the right notes. Chicken lovers would be glad to be introduced to Ember Roast, a new wood-fire Roast Chicken specialist in town. It's inappropriate to call them rotisserie as they technically... only roast Chicken and Fish. The menu is small but dedicated entirely to roast meat with a few desserts; price points are middle-average but expect long-waiting hours due to the cooking process. It's wiser to call for reservation or to place your orders in advance to shorten the waiting time.
