Well, we were intrigued by the Bubble Milk Tea Cheesecake (RM 22). It is expensive but the odd combination of pearls and cheesecake worked well miraculously. The cheesecake was spot on for us - semi rich and dense in texture, though some who used to a strong cheese taste with excessive creaminess would be lamenting after having it.

With sultry hot tropical weather all year long, it should be no surprise that Penang is swimming with amazing Ice Cream. The endless sweltering heat in Penang means non-stop cravings for a good serving of the icy sweet treat but forget the commercial ersatz brands that offer either Vanilla, Chocolate or Strawberry Ice Cream. For 4 years (since end of 2013), The Ais has been quietly serving some of the most delicate and healthy artisan Ice Cream in town. Co-founders Jonathan and Lydia's belief in healthy-eating cemented the core principal of The Ais; all products are made with care and low sugar content. The Ais was merely an online business but has since established its brick and mortar outlet in Pulau Tikus earlier (attached with an organic shop). In March 2017, It has now moved into a new location at Chulia Street and offering more options to its patrons. With more than 40 flavors available (not your usual boring flavors), there will be at least 3 alcohol-based Ice Cream and 16 types of Ice Cream on offer at all times (on rotation basis- you might not get some flavors on certain days); for those who concern, Vegan Ice Cream is also available.

Red Bean Ice Top (RM 23) was served in generous portion and topped up with Azuki beans and almond flakes. We enjoyed the well balanced sweetness introduced by the condensed milk and the sleek shaved ice that gentle to the tongue. Usage of Azuki beans did make the difference and reflect its Korean descent. It is best shared among 2 people to prevent fatigue arising from having too big bowl at one go.

If you are tired of the usual franchise cafes around, it's high time that you pay a visit to Cafe Droptop, a Korean-franchise brand that has recently landed on Penang. Cafe Droptop has heavy presence in Korea and in recent years, it has expanded its business operations to other Asian countries. Its first outlet in Penang can be found at Maritime Piazza. Like most franchise brands, Cafe Droptop offers a standard cafe menu with a Korean touch. The menu has a delicious mix of beverages and sweet treat; notable items include Maple Honey Toast, Bingsu (Korean Shaved Ice) and Sweet Potato Latte. Prices are on the higher side but the modern-chic atmosphere is comfortable and cozy, definitely a place where you can spend some leisure time with your friends or family.

Well, we choose Kim Haus Spaghetti Aglio Olio Chicken (RM 22.90) and it did not disappoint. Spaghetti noodles were cooked to al-dente and was seasoned nicely with a hint of spiciness, then garnished with olives. We were surprised to see generous quantity of big chicken cutlets were served. It was great but the entire presentation or experience would have been better if the chickens were cut into smaller slices. Overall it was a great spaghetti.

There is no better time to enjoy a good magical frozen dessert in a place like Malaysia with summer lasts all year long. Penang has no shortage of good desserts but we sure would not mind a new addition to the Penang cafe-dessert scene. The Craftisan is a new kid on the block and has just had its grand opening in early July 2017. Housed on the first floor of Soul Cafe, The Craftisan is an Ice Cream parlor that focuses on Gelato-inspired sweet treats. It gets points for the inspired creativity- for infusing Tea into their Ice Cream. The selection is full of Asian-leaning flavors- from refreshingly light Jasmine, Matcha to bolder ones like Tie Kuan Yin (Chinese Oolong Tea) and occasionally exotic delights like Durian Ice Cream. The cafe is brilliantly spaced and brightly lit, with clean and comfortable couches forming the homey-intimate atmosphere. It is a place best to chill out with friends over some sweet treats (if you do not mind the slightly higher price points).

On the mains, we had both Pan Seared Norwegian Salmon and Australian Grain Fed Beef Tenderloin; the former one was safe choice with pretty simple and straight-forward flavors, the latter option on the other hand, was beyond amazing. It probably outshined the Salmon, the Tenderloin was melt-in-the-mouth tender. The red meat was carefully cooked to the right doneness with spot-on seasoning and a burst of delightful meat juice. This is definitely one of the best Beef around.

The cafe is fully air-conditioned and with a few friendly dogs roaming the cafe, this is indeed a comfortable space for dog lovers to pet their canine friends. One of the dish that we miss the most from Taiwan would be their Minced Pork Rice. The portion is relatively small, exactly like the conventional portion offered in regular restaurants in Taiwan and the price is affordable too - just RM 8.00. Feed Me Love's Hot Pot series would satisfy any big eaters, the serving portion is huge with a basket of Hot Pot ingredients as well as a bowl of White Rice. We had the Collagen Hot Pot... the seemingly healthy broth was delicious with a mild vegetable-sweetness but we did not feel a strong presence of the protein (Collagen), as though we were having ordinary healthy Hot Pot broth. Barely a week old, Matcho Cafe is an exceptional-odd one, not only that it occupies first floor of a vacant shop, the name (which sounds like Macho) is contrary to the femininity of the place. Pink is obviously the favorite color here- from the signage to the wall... even its signature dish ("Pink Toast"). But the quirky atmosphere has a strangely welcoming vibe, probably due to the well-arranged plants and neat-tidy setting. The soft launch menu is small, featuring some Toasts and Sandwiches; not exactly a place for a proper meal but more than decent enough for a casual snack or gathering.

We had a Tiramisu Mousse Cake (RM 14) and a cup of Cappuccino (RM 9). Tiramisu is okay with soft texture but the tiramisu scent was not strong enough to give me a wow expression. Not a bad choice to harp over at the cafe for a sweet treat considering the affordable dessert choices.

Swens' Blueberry Cheese Cake was okay... it was creamy, cheesy but lacked the 'wow' factor. Sweetness was well-balanced though. Not too bad but did not really shake me. When the fresh out-of-oven Honey Strawberry Waffle was served to us, we were delighted to see the crisp edges but half way through, it turned soggy-soft; so eat it lest it turned back into a sloppy dough. It was lightly drizzled with Honey but we thought they could have served more, it was not as sweet as expected; would be even better if they could serve with a scoop of Ice Cream. Unlike what the name suggested, the Strawberry factor was in fact, weak.

Hakuna Matata's Cheese Cake was a little gelatinous but the cheesy-element was not discounted. It was creamy and rich, just the way we like. The cookie base was a little too hard to our liking though. To beat the tropical heat, the Passion Fruit Jelly would be a nice choice. The natural acidic of Passion Fruit cuts through the sweetness, making it the perfect thirst quencher. To complete your afternoon, pair it with the zesty Mojito Matata Mocktail.

Step in the cafe and you will be pleasantly amazed by how cozy the place is. Not too sure if it meant to be a hipster spot, Le Cafe does not have a big and clear signage, there's a small one at the side door (smaller than its window) though. It occupies a corner lot at Bricklin Road, a stone's throw distance away from the no-through road of Jalan Tye Kee Yoon and GAMA Supermarket. The interior decor is minimalist with a little industrial finishing, at the end of the cafe is a comfortable space most suitable for hipster-portraiture shots. Le offers a small Toast-focused menu in the mornings and snacks with alcohols for the rest of the days. In the evenings, visitors may opt to chill out at the al-fresco alley right next to the cafe. It may be a fun place to hangout or for a cup of drinks but we thought the food menu was a little less-exciting...

A.Maze Restaurant

Located in the heart of George Town, Penang. Serving Alternative Cuisine Chef Wei draws inspiration from the vibrant backdrop of the island he resides in, from it’s rich heritage and culture to the interesting produces that are found in and around this area, working with the seasons, a new course of meal is served every month. Pulling apart, reconstituting, reinterpreting, reinventing and innovating, A Maze’s ambitions are to break expectations, challenge conventions and leave you lost in wonderment on a culinary experience. There are no menus and no ordering here, we ask that you bring an open mind and an appetite, and allow Chef Wei to bring you on a journey a spoonful at a time.

Modernist cuisine or Molecular Gastronomy might not be new to the world but it's definitely something to range over, particularly for Penangites. Innovation is a critical element when it comes to a modernist kitchen- not only that the Chef must change the customary way one would prepare and present the dish but the Chef must bring a change to how diners experience the food either. Adventurous eaters can make their way to the small alley at Nagore Square (where all the bars and small little shops located); A.Maze occupies a strategic corner right next to the vacant land; from outside, the restaurant suggests a nary of information on what it is about to serve, inside... there are only 8 seats arranged snugly facing a small kitchen manned by the Chef-Owner Chef Wei. The very young and talented Chef honed his culinary skills from overseas and had had working experience in Michelin-starred restaurants. A.Maze serves "Omakase" which literally means "leave it to the Chef", the menu is not informed to diners and it relies entirely on "trust" but Chef Wei is not a one-trick pony- diners' sense of taste is not the only thing that changes here... the "Omakse" menu switches once a month and it depends on the seasonal offering. Thanks to Chef Wei, we had the opportunity to join him in his extraordinary gastronomical journey.

The server introduced their Famous Laksa Cik Umi with aplomb so we decided to try it out. The serving was large and the soup was pretty thick (thicker than the usual Assam Laksa). But it had all the essential columns ticked- sour, savory, spicy and a hint of sweetness (from the Shrimp paste). The condiments were spot on either but if I had to comment, it would be the texture of the noodles... which I thought they could be a little springier. Equally delectable was the Nasi Kacang, a serving of oiled Rice with 2 types of curries. Amazing flavors but we were not over-whelmed by the dish.

Tucked amist Georgetown, Aromas Cafe ensconced in one of the restored heritage houses along Tye Sin Street (also known as the 4th Street); Aromas is a simple cafe with small offering (both mains and desserts); for mains, expect to see a range of local delights such as Fried Rice, Fried Noodles/ Vermicelli Noodles and similar lackluster offering)... though we hear that they are of mediocre quality. Cake lovers might be overjoyed to know that Aromas offers an array of home-baked Cakes. The interior decor and their offering are of a huge mismatch; there are heavy Nyonya elements in the cafe- with seemingly priceless antiques and old-fashioned tiles. Nevertheless, we'd see the place as a dessert-eccentric cafe in lieu of a place offering mains (the mains lacked the pull-factor anyway); cakes-aside, be sure to check out their daily variety of fresh bakes (of pies and other sweet treats).
