Overall, the ingredients were very fresh and did not taste like it was laden with MSG. The price of the add-ons is slightly more expensive compared to the other restaurants offering steamboat in Cameron but I feel the quality does justify the price tag.
Located at Tringkap area’s main roadside lies a Water Cress Farm well known for its natural farming, spectacular scenery, and delicious styles of watercress cooking.
Overall, the food at Water Cress Valley is fairly tasty and fresh. Nevertheless, I think the main appeal lies in the nice scenery that the restaurant offers. Water Cress Valley also serves stir-fried (煮炒) Chinese dishes, but we do not have the stomach capacity to taste any dishes this round.
They also served a variety of handmade balls too where for first timer you can go for the Assorted Balls Platter (RM 26.50) which comes with their signature Teochew Style Fish Balls, Soft Bone Pork Meat Balls, Black Pepper Pork Meat Balls and Cuttlefish Balls.
Assorted Paste Platter RM48.80 Summergirl’s favourite. A trio of paste – Ebiko Prawn paste, Pork Paste, Paste of the Day. There’s also so original Fish Paste, Pork Paste, as well as more interesting flavours such as Dried Scallop Fish Paste, Century Egg Fish Paste and Otak-otak Fish Paste to try on.
The hotpot ingredients are of premium quality, expect to find handmade fish balls, fresh fish paste, imported meats, luxurious seafood etc on the menu (you may find more info on their website). We found most of the hotpot ingredients were fresh... at least the hefty price tags are well-justified
Ordering : 1 Steamboat ( for 4 person) 2 steam fish 3 bean curd 4 vegetable (RM 145-- 7 person)

We have 5 diners. Each diner is priced at RM15 for the steamboat (its not buffet). I would say the price is reasonable. Well..I’ll leave it to you guys to judge the food based on the photos below. Apart from that, you may choose your choice of soup base. Choice of Herbal Soup, Chicken Soup, Tom Yam. Choose either one or you can opt for “yin yong” (2 types of soup). As an Asian…of cos I would like to have ‘Tom Yam”. Therefore we went for “yin yong”.
Priced at RM110++ per person, it is a bit steep, but you get better quality and overall freshness of the meats, seafood and vegetables. And most importantly, you are dining in the best 5 stars resort in Cameron Highlands! You can also choose to have sukiyaki or teppanyaki for the same price, but I feel shabu shabu goes best with the chilly weather.
Reasons to visit: great setting with crisp evening air providing the perfect backdrop to the steaming hotpots; quality selection of fresh produce; fun interactive experience.
Gonbei is the only Japanese restaurant in Cameron Highlands and is a sister location to the Gonbei in Starhill Gallery. This restaurant boasts an open dining concept, making it ideal for steamboats. Incidentally, that was what rif and I had that night – shabu shabu. Priced at RM110++ per person,…
Overall the charcoal steamboat is great, especially the base soup (sweet non-msg detected) and vegetable (fresh, sweet and crunchy). Feels like we were drinking soup (asked refill 3 rounds) more than anything else in this meal! 😉
The steamboat meal cost about RM108.00 for the 6 of us.
"It is cold here, try lah our steamboat, eating steamboat will make you warm". Ok, Finally, we are convinced, and in we go to try. Since most of the menu of a few of the restaraunts looks almost the same we just walk into Hong Kong Hotel & Restoran for their charcoal steamboat.
Verdict: We paid RM 41.00 for our steamboat dinner, food wise and the vegetables were exceptionally fresh and crisp. But to our dismay, the service was extremely slow although there are less than 10 tables in this restaurant and our drinks came only after 20 minutes of order which I thought is quite unreasonable.
Love those vibrant spread of fresh fruits, pastries, real honey comb and others toothsome salads!
Pan Seared Norwegian Salmon with Honey Balsamic Sauce Served with Seasonal Highland Vegetables Thick juicy slice of fresh salmon that can’t goes wrong with the inhouse made sauce- I especially love the subtle sweetness in it- must be due to the type of highland honey used.
Reasons to visit: Simple comfort food in a charming setting; friendly and efficient service.
Verdict: Our steamboat meal was decent, portion and price was nothing much different with what we usually had at our area (Kepong). The cooling weather certainly a bonus especially for steamboat but it this enough to convince me for revisit?
