A food blog from a Singapore-based traveler
This was just reminiscent of the time when we were in Tokyo, a time when we could travel freely.
Japan Rail Café is operating by East Japan Railway Company gives buyers to purchase exchange orders for JR passes before their trips.
Service at Syohachi Yakiniku is professional and efficient. Staff are adept at fulfilling orders quickly, cleaning away empty / finished plates proactively, and also actively observing and topping up drinks as needed.
Overall, I think the food here is fresh and above average. Although the ventilation here can be improved, I think it is much better than some of the Korean barbecue joints that I frequent where I step out of the restaurant smelling like smoked bacon. Not that smoked bacon is a bad thing.
For diners with a hearty appetite, Syohachi is the place to go for a good yakiniku buffet in Singapore.
This bowl from Kuro Maguro was good that I inhaled it in short order.
Worth the splurge and until the next splurge I'd be dreaming up that bowl of tuna belly and rice.
We enjoyed it. But I suppose there's other collars that wouldn't cost so much for so little which represents better value.
A place where Unagi lovers need to check out in Guoco Tower. Unatoto is a popular Unagi Don chain in Japan.
Dinner venue was at the SBCD Korean Tofu House branch in Guoco Tower and while there wasn't a queue; the situation at its next door neighbor, Unatoto, was vastly different, with about 20 persons in line!
Besides eel dishes, there are also some side dishes at Unatoto Singapore. We tried the rolled egg and chawanmushi. Both were good and we would certainly be happy to order them again.
It's easy to inhale and then finish off with a cream puff.
I wouldn't say they are the best cream buns that I have had but they're good.
I can’t recall the precise taste of each of the buns but they were all very good.
IPPUDO is doing a special collab with a local actor at some of its outlets for the next few days.
It is not a large restaurant, we estimate that it seats around 30 diners.
It's not all about ramen at Ippudo. Savour their new side dishes before tucking into your favourite ramen. The three new sides dishes are Aburi Beef Sushi with Ikura ($18), Teppan Chashu Hamburg ($15) and Salmon Katsu ($18).
Chargrilled food is usually a hit-or-miss. Done wrong, the overcooked meat is stiff and unappetising; done right, as Aburi-EN has done, and the meat is nicely charred and flavourful.
This one looked carcinogenic. It even tasted carcinogenic. In a strangely addictive manner from that grilled infused aroma. I'd order this again.
The beautifully cooked fluffy short grain rice is soft and goes perfectly well with the tonkatsu.
Their mentaiko rosu katsu is another one of their tonkatsu offerings that I liked.
Service at Gyu San is friendly, efficient, and chirpy. The relatively young service staff offer recommendations, though the menu is small and focused, but they're able to describe each dish. They proactively top up water glasses, and offer to remove finished plates; I also note they clean up quickly when guests leave. Order fulfillment has a short wait.
Gyu San is your one-stop haven for Japanese prime beef served at its finest, in its finest.
There is no lack of Japanese restaurants in Tanjong Pagar and Wagatomo is a great addition. The Japanese dishes are given a modern twist here where most of the dishes are quite good. This is a convenient spot for dates or gatherings.
A wooden screen door slides open to a dining room fronted by a stone counter, behind which a shelf puts on display Wagatomo’s many sakes, umeshu, and retail items.
Food wise, the menu did feel rather ‘Western-Japanese’, with a selection of burgers ($19 – $22), sandwiches ($15 – $18) and rice plates ($16 – $18). There is a selection of pastries from Asanoya Bakery.
