For the meat lovers, THIRTY8 offers Australian 'Diamantina' Red Wagyu or Black Angus Beef from Stanbroke Farms. We had the rib eye (350g, marbling score 6 - RM350), which was thoughtfully sliced for sharing. Beautifully tender, melt-in-the-mouth and flavorful meat, we certainly enjoyed this and went straight to steak heaven. So so good! I'm also eyeing the Tomahawk for my next visit, very reasonably priced at RM350 for 900g.

Bankara Ramen - Avenue K Restaurant

Lot 2-7, Level 2, Avenue K Mall, 156 Jalan Ampang Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

The word ”Bankara” is a colloquial term that was once used in Japan to best describe an individual outstanding and unique style amidst the swarm of a conformist society. Bankara’s brand values and product offering are unmistakably Japanese, yet differentiated from the market competitors in tantalising the customers dining experience, namely the palette and sensory immersion. Embracing the philosophy “Cooking by Heart”, Bankara brand is the result of Mr. Kusano’s desire to constantly innovate and improve the taste of Japanese ramen. Drawing upon his family’s expertise handed down through the generations, Mr. Kusano embarked on a quest in selecting the finest of ingredients and cooking techniques, to develop a new ramen soup recipe. In 1998, the “Impact” taste so broadly associated with the brand, heralded the arrival of the Bankara Signature Ramen. With over 60 premium outlets spanning across Japan, Indonesia and Thailand, we proudly present Bankara Raman Malaysia.

My Personal Opinion I'm not a big fan of ramen and don't have it often enough for the very reasons why people find ramen appealing....for the intensely rich-flavoured pork bone broth and fatty meat. Maybe I should try a lighter soup base...or chicken ramen next time since I prefer clear, milder flavours. Still a worthy ramen option to those who adore big, bold flavours! ;)

Parking is free. Make your reservation early, bar is very much recommended. I was absolutely irritated because their waitresses never actually checked if we need anything else or if our food was OK. Also, I've noticed their waitresses are not very well-versed with what they are serving. Unfortunately we were there in group of 5 so we can't reserve the bar. Apparently the sushi chef, Ori-san explains everything if you're by the bar. I shall do that next time.

Aragan Yokocho is HUGE. It’s touted as the first and the largest authentic Japanese restaurant in Asia with approximately 18,848 sq ft. Holy moly! I heard they’re planning to open a few more branches this year. I wish they would open in Ipoh. When I first entered the place, I was a bit overwhelmed. I did not expect it to be that large. Among the dozens of horrible things I tried before giving up, these were the ones I found to be edible: salmon sashimi, soft shell crab tempura, teppanyaki, fruits and ice cream. The rest of the sashimi was just not fresh, looked like someone chopped them up in anger and tasted chewy. As for the cooked dishes, they are either overseasoned to the point of being too sweet or salty. Such a cheap tactic to mask the subpar ingredients used to prepare them. Even the chili crab was deep fried before being cooked in the sauce – it tasted damn weird. Unagi kabayaki is supposed to be a selling point considering it’s rare in Japanese buffets nowadays. But it was a huge let down for being rubbery and sugary.

Grilled Spring Chicken with Wasabi Pepper Sauce was an intriguing dish as it looked nothing like any Japanese dish we have ever seen. Tender and juicy spring chicken is well-chargrilled to render crispy skin and served with a wasabi laced brown pepper sauce before being crowned with a grilled red pepper. Besides the wasabi, the dish is practically non-Japanese, not that we minded because the dish is rather tasty and cooked well.
