160 Macalister Road 11400 George Town Penang

We hand craft kakigōri, Japanese shaved ice flavoured with fresh fruits and premium ingredients to bring a breeze of cool air to Malaysia (whilst making it taste nice too). Kakiyuki’s fuwa-fuwa(ふわふわ) soft fluffy shaved ice is similar to newly fallen snow. It is only paired with the best of what’s in season. We never add anything weird like artificial colouring or flavouring, and they’re never, ever made from concentrate. Welcome to our bizarre, delicious, frozen paradise.

Arakawa's Yaki Beef Curry Rice was served in a hot pot with baked, melted Cheese topped. There were slivers of sliced Beef well hidden in the Rice but they were not a lot. They could also be more generous with the serving of Japanese Curry, the proportion of Rice to Curry was somewhat inappropriate (all dried up towards the end). While the Japanese Curry flavor was apparent, we thought it was flat and could be monotonous for one to finish entirely. It lacked the refreshing elements like Carrot, Potatoes or perhaps, some Apple in it. Fortunately, we topped the Beef Curry Rice with an additional add on of Hamburg Steak. While the texture might be a little overly dry, we enjoyed the rich meaty flavor and thought it went well with the Japanese Curry Rice.

There is quite limited selections for the mains in the menu, however savoury signature dishes do beat up quantity. The squid ink pasta and squid ink rice is actually quite disgusting me at the first place, as I could not imagine chewing this black black in my mouth. Starting with some of J Garden's best sellers- the Tender Chicken Nanban is a dish not to be missed. It is definitely a dish that cannot be found else where... juicy, tender Chicken meat coated with airy batter being fried till perfection and topped with sweet-savory-sour, addictive caramelized Onion sauce. Good on its own or even better to enjoy with their creamy home-made Tartar sauce. While it is contenting to enjoy the dish alone, it is more tummy filling and palate-pleasing to make it a set (additional Rm 6)... with Japanese Rice, Miso Soup and various condiments.

Most Penangites are believed to have serious obsession with Japanese food and if you are one of them, make your way to Gomo Wine Bar Restaurant at Campbell Street. Gomo is not the casual Japanese eatery nor the traditional Izakaya in the neighborhood, the team behind puts a modern spin on things. The Japanese-fusion menu offered by Gomo is extensive, but let's be frank here, it would not be a cheap meal out. Expect to pay at least Rm 40 per person for a main and a side order but the dishes are uncommon and rarely found in most Japanese establishments. Not only that the standards (for food) are high here, their service quality is top-notch either. If you are into alcohol, it has a good variety of Japanese Rice Wine and Red/White Wines. Gomo is a little hidden away, it's tucked within a nondescript heritage house along Campbell Street, facing L Kitchen.

Nigiri Sushi Sakura, a sushi platter that comes with raw fish slice over pressed vinegared rice is a real bargain with RM 38. The sushi was no doubt fresh but the rice preparation was sloppy - the rice could not hold well as one and did not stick together, and it fall into pieces the moment we try to pick it up. The winning dish was the Seared Beef with Red Wine sauce. My partner in crime did not like rare meat so we had to go for Medium Rare but the texture was still beyond amazing- so tender and meaty, the Red Wine sauce did not overkill the beefy flavor but good enough to provide a touch of flavors to the meat. This was the dish that we enjoyed most that evening.

Tokyo Yakitori is a new Japanese restaurant in town, sister restaurant to one of the oldest Japanese joints in Penang- Kirishima Japanese Restaurant (at Cititel Penang) but both are geographically near to each other. Though Tokyo Yakitori is just a few shops away from Kirishima, both are targeting different segments- Kirishima's offering is more superior in terms of ingredients and price points while Tokyo Yakitori is more wallet-friendly. Notwithstanding, Tokyo Yakitori still offers decent Japanese delights- from the standard Japanese appetizers to Yakitori (Japanese Skewers) to Sushi, Ramen and Bento Sets. In the evening, the place is turned into a restaurant cum bar that offers a vast selection of Japanese Sake to pair over their range of Skewers. Nevertheless, the place is still suitable for all age-range of diners and that includes both teetotalers and drinkers. Tucked away from the bustling Penang Road, Snow story & Chef De Cuisine is probably one of the most "international" cafes in Penang... with a partnership consists of more than 3 nationalities. It started off with Snow Story, a shaved ice-focused Japanese dessert parlor manned by a Japanese proprietor (the wife is a local Penangite) and recently, joined by a couple from Hong Kong, who runs Chef De Cuisine. Snow Story offers a small dessert menu but the variety assures authenticity- everything is home-made and that includes the colorful sugar syrup, all made using natural ingredients like fruits and vegetables. For main, turn to Chef De Cuisine; the Michelin-starred restaurant trained Chef offers a unique range of Western dishes... with a delightful Asian touch. While quality is above average, the prices are lower than expected. The only setback is the limited seating, it can be a great spot to hold small lunch meetings or gathering otherwise.

There are plenty of delights churned out from the grills, there are also some local dishes... the fare is mostly Asian. The alcohol menu is not extensive but a few selections of Beers and canned drinks. Kappo by Arakawa Restaurant

253G-1, 4 Premier Centre Jalan Burma 10350 George Town Penang Malaysia

The meaning of Kappo comes from traditional Japanese cooking methods; to cut, boil, stew & fry. Different from sushi chefs who mainly cut fish & make sushi, a Kappo chef is trained to master numerous ways of cooking and to understand the seasonality of food, the quality of ingredients and the presentation. In order to gain extensive skills as a master Kappo chef, usually, more than 10 to 15 years of persistent training is required. This is one of the reasons why it is very difficult to find many skillful Kappo chefs. In general Kappo Restaurants do not have sushi bars and Sushi restaurants should not use the title “KAPPO”.

Apart from the Omakase, we also tried the 7-course Sushi Gozen Set, in which most of the dishes were similar to the Omakase's in one way or another. The key difference was the 7-piece Nigiri set, every piece was a masterpiece of its own- beautifully hand pressed and topped with slices of generously cut Sashimi. The Rice was firm on the outside and airy inside, leaving the Nigiri a pleasant texture on the palate.
