Sanoook - Pavilion Restaurant

Lot 1.104 Level 1 Pavilion Elite 168 Jalan Bukit Bintang 55100 Kuala Lumpur

Sanoook is inspired by our love affair with Thai and Japanese cuisine. Using secret, authentic Thai recipes from our flagship restaurant Chakri Palace and adding a twist of presentation and creative culture of Japanese food, we are the first to combine these two delectable cuisines. In Sanoook, we hope to bring you the future of gourmet where cultures and tastes merge, creating a whole new culture of fun dining. ‘Sanook’ means ‘fun’ in Thai. We added another ‘O’ to represent a circle of friendship…Hence, Sanoook means having fun together with friends! Our belief – A good meal can turn strangers into friends, strengthen friendships, and bring solace to a bad day.

The majority of the menu leans towards Thai specialities with Japanese offerings making up a small part of the menu only. The few that I tried, I have to say the Thai dishes made a more positive impact. The food I've managed to try here is average at best (though there's still plenty to try as the menu is quite extensive). Prices may be a little on the high side (for both types of cuisine, especially the desserts) but some of the Thai dishes do come in generous portion-sizes. I'm not sure if I'm convinced to order from the Japanese section of the menu again since they failed to nail the salmon skewer which I thought is one of the easiest things to execute. Managed by the fine folks of Chakri (of which I had the pleasure of dining before), I think the Thai dishes here are still worth checking out as they certainly won't be as expensive as Chakri. Just don't go in with too high an expectation and you should come off satisfied.

If you're in Pavilion and in the mood for some teppanyaki, Tokyo Teppan is a possible option since that's their speciality anyway...and you can't go wrong with chicken or salmon. But what's even better is that if someone in your party prefers donburi, you can cross order from their sister restaurant (Tokyo Don) next door which opens up even more options for its diners. Prices are fairly decent and a meal here will cost you under RM50 per person if you stick with the combo teppanyaki sets. I'd like to return to try the beef set one day.

I guess I'm just not into Japanese curry...neither the proteins (which are mostly fried) nor the curry impressed. C'mon, once we've eaten/tasted the complexities of our local curries, is there anything that can come close? Yeah, I know, it's not a fair comparison since Japanese curry is different.

If you're craving juicy yet good quality steaks, then this no-frills place for meat, cooked the Japanese way with simply just salt and black pepper, is definitely worth a visit. Although I won't go as far as to say that the steaks here are cheap since some of the wagyu beef can go as high as RM200, you can still find some very reasonably-priced and affordable Australian beef cuts for around RM25. So, go with what you think is within your budget. Besides a meat fest, there are plenty more food options here (like sushi, sashimi, tempura and bento) though I'll be more tempted by the lust of gorgeous meat more than anything else if I'm here again!

A Bento box is a handy solution to the standard rectangular lunchbox. The secure lid opens to reveal a compartment style interior where different foods can be placed in different sections of the box. These compartments are just big enough so that you do not need to overfill one type of food. Hence, a more complete balanced meal is obtained in one Bento box. Since the amount is fixed before lunch time, we don’t have to over eat even though we are hungry. Balanced diet and controlled portion, how cool is that? For those shopping or working in KL city, do you know that you can now have a balanced and fulfilling Japanese bento meal at ISETAN THE JAPAN STORE for only RM15?
