4Fingers Crispy Chicken - Gurney Paragon Restaurant

L1-06, Ground Floor Gurney Paragon Mall 10250 Georgetown Penang

At 4FINGERS, we’re nuts about chicken. So when we discovered the best Asian crispy chicken in New York City’s grungy subway scene, we knew we had to share it. And so began the revolution of crispy chicken. Spicy, crispy, unique and downright addictive - it's chicken that's so bad, it's good. And there are thousands who would agree with us.

For those who prefer meaty bite sans the bones, the Chicken Chop could be another option for them- Boneless slab of Chicken Chop glazed with Soy Garlic or Hot sauce, served with Fries. If the Asian in you demands Rice, the Drumsticks Rice Box would do the trick. 2 huge Chicken Drumsticks served over steaming hot Rice, drizzled over sweet Teriyaki sauce would satisfy your Asian palate.

The sweet and spicy sauce was well marinated into the chicken wings, after fried it was then served hot. The taste of the chicken wings was both crispy and tender. The way the fries is served is also something unique as they come with a choice of kimchi or seaweed seasoning powder. For my own preference, I still love the seaweed taste compared to kimchi.

Ginseng Chicken for RM 38. It is the classic version with half portion of a free-range chicken and glutinous rice. Ginseng scent could be tasted from the soup but it lacks the depth that yields wow factor, especially the chicken did not really take in all the essence yet. Good thing is the restaurant provides rock salt for you to customize the soup saltiness level, and once salt added (especially onto the chicken), it elevates the taste to another level.

Galbitang is an unusual affair at any Korean restaurants in Penang but the comforting, delicious Beef soup is to die for. Han Sik Ga's rendition had Glass Noodles included, served with piping hot Steamed Korean Rice. Salt and Pepper was offered to us... clearly a Korean-thing as the Koreans usually let the diners to season their own soup. The Galbitang was served to us scorching hot... but definitely most comforting to the tummy. It packed a powerful beefy flavor; the Beef short Ribs were beautifully cooked to the addictive, meaty texture. We thought it was amazing.

KyoChon Malaysia - G Hotel KyoChon 1991 Korean Fried Chicken Restaurant

G-03A, Ground Floor, G-Hotel No. 1689A Persiaran Gurney 10250 Georgetown Penang

Our fried chicken has been South Korea's favourite for more than 20 years, and here's why. We fry every piece to order, giving you perfect, crispy skin and juicy, tender meat. We brush every piece with our special Korean sauces. We're tastier. We use canola oil to fry our fresh, drug-free chickens. We're healthier. We use only natural ingredients, and no MSG. Ever. We've better quality. Come and be chickenlightened at KyoChon.

We've had Kyo Chon's Salsal Chicken Strips before (in Pavilion branch), we thought the ones here in Penang were of same quality. The Chicken Strips were deep fried till perfect crisp while the inner part remains juicy and tender. It went well with the Honey Mustard dip. To our dismay, their signature Deep Fried Chicken Wings and Drumette were of smaller sizes than expected. There were not much flesh, though the flavors were bold, it lacked the satisfying meaty bite. In case you are wondering... the Fried Chicken were not greasy at all.... thanks to the Korean's way of frying Chicken, which renders out all the fats in the meat, leaving a crispy crust with succulent flesh inside.

We were definitely caught off-guard when we saw the red hot colour for both Gochujang Bulgogi (Spicy Stir Fried Pork with Onions and Hot Chili Pepper Paste, 辣椒酱猪肉 RM 30) and Haemul-Tang (Spicy Seafood Stew, made by boiling a variety of seafood in spicy broth 海物汤 RM 65). Anyway, do not be deceived by its red hot colour. It was not as burning as we thought, nor the heat will build up gradually. The taste was rich yet mild without causing any numbness on the lips. Gochujang Bulgogi was more on a sweet side, while Haemul-Tang packs a generous quantity of a variety of seafood, which includes small crabs and prawns. The soup offers a nice scent of seafood though its murky appearance might turn you off.

DDung's Bob Burger - Gurney Plaza 뚱's 밥버거 Restaurant

Ddung's Bob Burger serves their burgers just like how one would expect it to be but Rice was replaced in lieu of fluffy-soft Burger Bun. The savory mayhem consists of Kim Chi, Korean Fried Chicken and Tuna; well-sandwiched with two layers of spice-flavored Rice. The concoction reminds of Chicken Rice (heavily drenched in Sauce) or wet Onigiri, well-inflected in the form of burger. It carried a gentle heat with a sleek sweetness while the acidity in the Kim Chi cuts through the sweetness and provides another layer of dimension. Flavors were well-balanced and texture was well-taken care of (with juicy Corns and crispy Fried Chicken). It was quite good on sharing basis (not too sure how it fares if one were to finish it entirely on his/her own).

Buldak... Bulgogi-styled Chicken meat served on hot platter blanketed with a layer of Mozzarella Cheese, was a show stopper. The Chicken was surprisingly tender with flavorful marination. It gets pretty addictive and would go perfectly well with any form of alcohol. Jogae... Clams cooked in Soju was equally good, the Clams were nicely popped and they were all fresh and plump.

Mr. Dakgalbi - Gurney Plaza Restaurant

170-03-61 A Gurney Plaza 170 Persiaran Gurney 10250 Georgetown Penang

A recipe that dates back to the 1960s, dakgalbi consists of stir-fried marinated chicken in a chili pepper paste along with Dduk (rice cake) and a fine selection of side dishes. Among these variations, one can choose variations like Bean Sprouts Dakgalbi, Seafood Dakgalbi and even a variety of fried rice, seafood pancake and noodles. More so than the sheer deliciousness of their dakgalbi, Mr. Dakgalbi is also known for offering patrons the novelty of having a chef personally cook your food at your table. Basically, every time you eat there, you will get to enjoy this masterfully executed culinary performance right in front of your eager eyes!

The High Tea Set Menu offered by Averie House is actually a partnership between the cafe and Gen, the fine dining restaurant in Lebuh Presgrave. Bearing a premium price tag at RM 130 per set, the high tea set revolves around peculiar items that you least expect will appear in 3-tier high tea set, yet the taste was miraculously appeasing. Ditch your thought of having fruit tarts, chocolate macaron, dainty desserts or sandwiches, and expect a playful tickle to your taste buds using local flavour infused desserts such as Durian puff, Cempedak macaron, Nutmeg mouse cake and etc.

Dakgalbi, a type of Korean stir-fry dish with Gochujang sauce, has been well-received by Malaysians. One of the biggest players- Mr. Dakgalbi has recently opened a new branch at Gurney Plaza. With its success in central Malaysia, the spread of news on the brand expanding its business operations to Penang was quick; many ardent fans of Korean Dakgalbi were seen queuing patiently over the weekend, just to have their cravings fixed. The franchised restaurant has a small menu dedicated for Dakgalbi but their unique selling point is none other than their alluring Cheese Ring where diners get to enjoy the stir-fried Chicken with pulls of gooey, stretchy melted Cheese.

We sampled a few of Korean signature dish such as Samgyetang Ginseng Stew (RM 38). The iconic Korean summer dish Ginseng Stew though may not suitable for the scorching hot weather in Malaysia but the taste outweigh the factor. Chicken is stuffed with glutinous rice, the broth is rich and tasty, and the ginseng flavoured chicken is tender and delicious. We could practically eat and chew the bone as it has been boiled for hours prior serving to us. Overall, this dish is a reflection on the sincerity of the restaurant put into their dish preparation.

If you are old enough to have heard of the name- Bee Won Korean Restaurant, you probably have an idea on the restaurant's background. With the ever-growing popularity on Korean food, the restaurant has recently opened up a new Korean BBQ place at New World Park. The setting is pretty much Korean roadside barbecue setting, with stainless steel tables and grills. The heat-intolerant would be less-excited to know that the place is not air-conditioned but if you are game for an al-fresco barbecue dining experience, this is the type of setting that you are looking for. Apart from the quintessential Korean barbecue items and alcohols (like Soju), the place offers a wide variety of Korean delights. It opens for lunch as well so if you are in the mood for a casual Korean fix, you can drop by for a quick meal. The prices are pretty much Korean-restaurant standard but the quality remains consistent (you would know if were a Bee Won customer).

Best part of Jipangi... you get to choose the size that fits you the most! We picked the larger one duh. The choices (for the Soft Serve) were pretty limited, only Vanilla and Chocolate. We had a mix of both but only to find out that more than half of the Soft Serve was Chocolate. The flavors were mediocre... the Chocolate was especially artificial and it possessed a gritty-icy texture (as oppose to smooth and velvety). The Corn stick on the other hand, was decent. It was unsalted and unsweetened but as crunchy as how it should be, with a mellow Corn-flavor. If only the Soft Serve could taste better....

For Rm 21, diners get to enjoy both Tteokbokki and Kimbap as a set. Kimbap tasted fine but the Tteokbokki sauce was a little diluted, as in it was a little watery and not thick enough to cling onto the Korean Rice Cake. Instead of being sweet, it carried a peculiar spiciness and we found out why.... they have included Bird's Eyes Chilies. The Spicy Korean Fried Chicken was not any better either, though the texture was legit, they possessed a peculiar fermented Soy flavor which we were quite fond of. In terms of sweetness and spiciness, we thought they were alright. A little hits and misses but given the wallet-friendly price points, we thought the place is worth-trying, at least for novelty experience.

Sae Ma Eul, a longtime Korean barbecue joint (well-established in Klang Valley) expanded to Penang recently and we figured out at least a trio of reasons for that: quality, authenticity and a good selection of not only meat but Korean delights (such as cold noodles, Kimchi stew, Korean Pancake etc) as well. The new Penang branch can be found on 1st floor of Automall (at Karpal Singh Drive) but don't be put off by the location. Though not air-conditioned, it provides an outdoorsy ambiance with good ventilation (sea breeze if you are lucky); exactly like those barbecue joints by the roadside in South Korea. The setting is casual, modern and clean; Sae Ma Eul uses charcoal to fuel and cook the meat but fret not for the divas, the helpful service staff are forever ready to assist. The alcoholics might be glad to know that the Korean BBQ place offers "Hite" Beer and Korean Soju; otherwise, the complementary unlimited refills of water would mercilessly effective at washing away the accumulating heat.

Red Bean Ice Top (RM 23) was served in generous portion and topped up with Azuki beans and almond flakes. We enjoyed the well balanced sweetness introduced by the condensed milk and the sleek shaved ice that gentle to the tongue. Usage of Azuki beans did make the difference and reflect its Korean descent. It is best shared among 2 people to prevent fatigue arising from having too big bowl at one go.

If you are tired of the usual franchise cafes around, it's high time that you pay a visit to Cafe Droptop, a Korean-franchise brand that has recently landed on Penang. Cafe Droptop has heavy presence in Korea and in recent years, it has expanded its business operations to other Asian countries. Its first outlet in Penang can be found at Maritime Piazza. Like most franchise brands, Cafe Droptop offers a standard cafe menu with a Korean touch. The menu has a delicious mix of beverages and sweet treat; notable items include Maple Honey Toast, Bingsu (Korean Shaved Ice) and Sweet Potato Latte. Prices are on the higher side but the modern-chic atmosphere is comfortable and cozy, definitely a place where you can spend some leisure time with your friends or family.

The beauty of Injeolmi Bingsu is its simplicity... milk flavored shaved Ice topped with Mung Bean Flour, Mochi, Nuts and evaporated Milk. The shaved Ice was fine, soft and milky-sweet but the sweetness was of comfortable level, it was subtle and not saccharine sweet. The evaporated Milk increased the smoothness and milkiness of the sweet treat; overall, we thought it was quite delicious
