But I hit jackpot when I discovered Pak Angah nasi lemak. His kerang sambal is one of his signatures (the other being paru and their famous Ayam Sambal) and deservingly so – plump and cooked with sambal infused with kaffir lime leaves, every juicy bivalve was fragrant (citrusy) and rather addictive.

First to arrive was the Daging Rusuk, and the staff promptly portioned it out for us and served it on our plates. Great service! The beef ribs has first been braised, then charcoal grilled, imparting a delicious smokiness to the tender meat. The meat was especially good eaten with the air asam jawa as the tangy sauce pairs well with the rich meat. Highly recommended!

When I saw this Lontong poster, I had to order it because I like to eat compressed rice. The ingredients. Rice cake or compressed rice is what I like to eat. There is also deep fried mee hoon in the lontong which is too oily to be eaten so I just left them. Something I seldom do because I don't like to waste food but trust me, they are just too oily so it is better to walk away.

One of the signature (and popular) dishes here is the Nasi Ayam (RM55), aka chicken rice. Guests can opt for either roasted or poached chicken. We went for the roasted chicken and I was impressed by the generous portion that arrived. Tastewise, the chicken was tender and comes with three different dipping sauce - chilli, ginger and sweet soy sauce. The rice was pretty good too, as it was fragrant and flavorful. Overall, a pretty authentic rendition of a Malaysian favourite.

The Nasi Ayam Goreng Kunyit set @ RM7.50 (with teh o ais) is the most popular dish and it should be the first thing to try if you are new here. Compared to the other ayam goreng kunyit (usually dry and tough) that you get at the usual Malay tomyam restaurants, Mat Rock’s version is evidently juicier and prepared with fresh chicken. Not too salty too!

For something a bit more unusual than our all-time-favorite Asam Pedas, we savored the King’s Curry Fish Head (RM70.75). The garoupa fish is fresh with a firm and sweet flesh. Paired with the thick and creamy curry well-spiced up, the fish and vegetable is deliciously delectable. The curry was so yummy that I even find myself spooning the gravy and drenching my rice with it.

Verdict: Hits and misses, it was a decent Peranakan meal with most of the dishes we had were brilliantly done and capable to please our palate. Some dishes could be better with minor tweaks. Comfortable dining environment and friendly service. Recommended: Acar Rampai, King’s Curry Fish Head, Ayam Pongteh, Telur Belada, Sambal Fried Paku and Crispy Popiah.

Chicken Rendang (S), 20.66 ringgit. The Chicken Rendang was awesome, really really tasty. I wished it came with more chicken pieces though – 2 pieces of chicken thigh and a drumstick was not enough to be shared between the two of us, lol but boy, was it da bomb! You’d get tender chicken meat, the kind that literally falls of the bone, soaked and packed with flavor. the rendang gravy was thick and packed with flavor. Yummmmm!

On the other hand, their Chicken Sate's were nice, though not the best that I have eaten and I am very sure that many would be able to vouch for this. I think it is the brand name that sells itself now more than the quality of the Sate's. The Sate's have definitely shrunk in size over the years but the taste has been consistent. I would rate their Chicken Sate's at 8/10

At first I did not want to take the nasi lemak, but looking at the lady next to me enjoying her every bite then we decided to try out too. It is good! I took Ayam Masak Merah and Cuttle Fish. All cook to perfection and of course a sunny side up. Sambal is different from others, as you can taste the spices of chili, mild spicy with sweet end for Pak Hassan version, and I did my usual is a mix curry ontop of my Nasi Lemak. Nasi Lemak here is fragrant with pandan and mild santan yet it is dry enough to make it pieces.

Taste wise, the Kway Teow basah was at best, average, if you compare this with the ones you can get in Penang. Nasi Ayam Kicap Sambal Gelek, 8 ringgit. I did not have an inkling of an idea of what to expect for but I knew for sure that I’d get rice and chicken, sweet deal. As you could see from the image above, the dish comes with 4,5 medium sized fried chicken coated with what I assume is the sambal gelek + rice + chili paste + cucumber. I am the kind of person that needs gravy for everything, including the rice, I like it a lil wet. I assume that people usually eat this dish dry but I was not use to it at all. So, I had to go back to the stall, to request for some extra. The sambal gelek was yummy. It basically was thick, dark gravy that was a lil spicy, a lil sweet. Add that in with some crispy chicken, rice and some heat from the chili paste? It was delicious.
