This was a local haunt that deserves the praise it gets.
This chicken rice stall has been around for 40 years and it's made Halal. The style of cooking is a mixture of Hainanese with Bakso (Indonesian Style) added with star anise, black pepper and turmeric this is an unique fusion flavor. The chicken is soft and tender packed with flavor inside out while the cabai hijau (green chilli sauce) is very appetizing, citruses, savory and slight sweetness.
I truly understand why so many people fancy Wan Roti Canai Beratur after tasted it. I had a Roti Canai Masala, which is fluffy and crispy, and tasted like a cookie instead of roti. Then the Roti Canai Pisang is sweet due to the usage of sweet bananas. Anyhow, the winning tip is the savoury curry gravy. It is unique and imparted a very nice flavour to the roti canai, and you will yearn for more and practically drench your roti canai with the curry to enjoy it thoroughly. No wonder they charge 20 cents for excessive curry.
Verdict - Satay Meat is succulent, well marinated and coated with honey, then grilled to the excellent point to possess some char. However, we do find the honey is a tad excessive, rendering a sweet taste which somehow masked the natural flavour of the satay. We could not differentiate between some of the meat here, and distinctive ones would be stomach, beef, mutton and duck.
Overall, the nasi tomato is quite addictive and I would come back again but the Ayam Merah was a no no for next trip.
Of many Laksa Kedah stalls in Alor Setar, Laksa Ikan Sekoq is one of the popular choice by folks in Alor Setar. The Laksa (RM 4.50) here is served along with a whole mackerel (ikan kembung), and you can get unlimited refill of noodles as long as your stomach can fit!
