It has been unbearably hot here lately and the cold and refreshing pomelo salad (RM8.00)ā¦that we had was definitely a welcome relief.
For something a little stronger and spicier, I had their lamb curry (RM19.00, with rice)ā¦
Tried the green curry chicken (RM16.00 with rice)ā¦and instantly declared that it was very nice
Iāve always loved the kway teow thāng in Penang and elsewhere so I asked for the kway teow soup and steamed chicken (RM15.00)ā¦and yes, I sure enjoyed the noodles in the clear, refreshing soupā¦and Iāve had steamed chicken at a lot of places here but for reasons unknown, I thought the one hereā¦was a cut above the rest and I did like it a lot.
Once again, it failed to win me over, not when it was just plain rice drowned with some gulai (curry) gravy that was a little sweet, I thought and the fried chicken was just fried chicken, no more no lessā¦all breast! At best, I would say it was all right but given a choice, I would rather go for something else.
I caught a whiff of the wok hei of the Foochow fried noodles, wet (RM4.00)ā¦the moment it was served and I was most certainly impressed already even before I started eating. There were two prawns, some bits of meat and a number of sliced fish cake, a lot more ingredients than at many other places around town but yes, I was thinking that they could have added a little bit more green vegetables.
Order a plate of their mee pok, the flat noodles (RM3.00)ā¦to enjoy. They use stewed pork here, not char siew nor the char siew-wannabe ā the boiled pork, coloured red.
This time around, I tried the supreme prawn noodles (RM13.80)ā¦and I had that with hor funā¦It certainly looked a whole lot nicer in their promotional photograph and at best, I thought it was all right ā I just did not like the sambal. It reminded me of those canned ones that I simply do not enjoy.
I ordered their Nam Heong chicken hor fun (RM11.50)ā¦which turned out tasting different from what I had at Old Town or Pappa Rich ā it did not have that hint of sweetness in the soup but yes, I thought it was good and I enjoyed it.
The steamed char siew pao or what they call their Supreme BBQ Pork Bun..were very good and at RM1.00 each (2 for RM2.00 in the promotion), that sure was a steal.
The fried chicken was all right, thank goodness they did not burn that too and no, they did not bother to remove the heads and the insides of the ikan bilis (dried anchovies) either plus they sure were not very generous with the sambalā¦
The nasi kerabu lamb chop (RM15.90)ā¦sounded interesting so I decided to order that to try. They do have daging bakar with their nasi kerabu here but I have never ordered that there, only their ayam percik or fish, depending on the day of the week but these days, they have it only on Saturdays. To give credit where credit is due, the lambā¦was very very nice, so nice that I only ate a few of the pieces and gave the rest to my girl to enjoy ā she loves lamb as much as she loves her potatoes. Other than that, it was nothing like nasi kerabu
My girl stuck to her smoked chicken rice, drumstick (RM5.50)ā¦ā¦and it was so good we could detect the fragrance of the rice the moment it was served. The typical chicken rice chili dip was really good too that day ā extra spicy.
He suggested the mee racun Azzuna, kambing (RM12.00). I did not tell them this but though I enjoyed it very much, I did feel it was a bit too pricey. Yes, the lamb was so very nice ā it was something like lamb stew, the meat was fall-off-the-bone tender and the gravy was like what one would find in a stew except that it was spicy so they probably had lots of chilies and dunno-what-else in it. However, considering that that was quite a lot of meat, what they could have done was to give just one slab of it instead of twoā¦with the noodles or rice with slices of cucumber or tomato or lettuce by the side and charge a more affordable RM6.50 or RM7.00 for that
I ordered the kampua mee, white (RM3.50)ā¦which was all right, very old school, very authentic, very original. I thought it was a little on the dry side so probably a bit more oil would be good.
