Filipino market located at the central of Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. It overlooks the ocean is commonly known as Pasar Besar (Central Market), Pasar Filipino is placed with fish, fruits, vegetables, and also handicrafts. This market made up of hundreds of tiny stores, is undoubtedly the best place to shop for souvenirs, seafood, and street food. The price of the seafood here is unbelievably reasonably affordable. With RM50 you can eat and shop until you drop.
Grouper fish was fresh and the natural aromatic taste was fully preserved with the natural steam. Scallops cooked in kam heong style and ginger clams were delicious too.
The market is in the heart of downtown Kota Kinabalu so most tourists will be hanging out nearby. While the market may not have many items of interest for tourists, it is a great place to soak up the local culture and experience a traditional Sabahan market. If it’s inconvenient to be in the area on a Sunday morning, you can safely skip the Gaya Street Sunday Market. Most likely, you won’t buy anything and it’ll take you less than an hour to see all the stalls.
You shouldn’t miss the Api Api Night Food Market on Gaya Street if you’re in Kota Kinabalu on a Friday or Saturday night. We went to the market twice during our stay in KK because there was so much to eat. It’s also a much more interesting dinner option than the restaurants around. There’s a huge variety of drinks and freshly made local cuisine that visitors are sure to find something that will get their mouths watering.
This stall at the Wisma Atria Food Republic is allegedly from Sabah in East Malaysia with this old recipe of fried pork on rice noodles.
