We were shocked but delighted to see the gigantic portion of this Caveman Platter which should be able to feed 3 to 5 person well. The Platter comes with 2 Chicken Sausages, 2 Pepper Lamb Sausages, 4 Chicken Kebabs, 4 Chicken Wings, as well as some Char-Grilled Lamb. Both the sausages were well-executed and delicious so does the Kebab.

There's a hidden gem tucked in the Malay hawker center at Sri Tanjung Pinang, off the main street to Straits Quay (beside Island Plaza). The unpretentious and frill-free stall boasts over a Middle Eastern-influenced delicacy... Kacang Phool, a type of addictive meat sauce served with Toast. While they are well-known for their Kacang Phool, they are not a one-trick pony; they offer a wide range of local Malay delicacies namely Roti Jala, Roti Bakar with Kaya Butter etc. If you need suggestion or have any questions over their products, the very articulate Malay owner is more than happy to assist you. To find Roti Bakar Kacang Phool.... from Jalan Tanjung Tokong turn into Jalan Sri Tanjung Pinang right next to Island Plaza (the route to Straits Quay), turn left into the first junction and drive for another minute. The hawker center is on your right and Roti Bakar Kacang Phool is the first stall, facing the main road.

One of the thing we enjoyed here is the all day breakfast menu. Bello breakfast (RM 18.40) is nicely executed with sweet cherry tomatoes, portebello mushrooms, a piece of wholemeal bread, brinjals and scrambled egg. Spaghetti Aglio olio with Smoked Duck (RM 21) is cooked to al-dente with a generous quantity of smoked duck. Sprinkles of chili flakes may be a tad overwhelming as it rendered the entire dish tasted flat. Overall, the spaghetti was a tad greasy to enjoy.

Rather a playful combination, the Creamy Tomato Thai Sauce Spaghetti did not really hit us. We found the combo a little odd at the beginning... it was a medley of sweet, savory, sour and spiciness in one go but it was somehow weird to us. It was something like Thai Chili sauce with Carbonara Cream sauce; the Chicken was disappointingly average. Though tender, it did not really leave us with a very deep impression.

The best part is, there is also a tiny food menu created by the lady owner. The owner takes sandwich a step further with the Kimchi & Chicken Sandwich. The sandwich with crispy edges calls for kimchi and chicken in the filling. It is simple and delightful with the bold flavor and crunchy texture of the kimchee cabbage and chicken cumulating together. The sandwich even comes with a refreshing salad.

The Poke Bowl on the other hand, was beyond amazing. The Rice was infused with Pesto and they were very generous with the condiments. The concoction turned out to be a little sweet but it was completely bearable. We love the Pesto-element and thought the dish was very palatable. Intrigued by its name, we ordered a Chicken Tagine (RM 32) and Chicken Piri Piri (RM 22), a Moroccan specialty served with rice & couscous and a sousvide whole boneless chicken marinated in piri piri sauce respectively. The classic North African chicken tagine had 4 decent chicken stew in curry alike gravy, though it is lighter than the conventional Malaysian curries. Let's Meat's rendition of French Toast was a complete surprise, few thick slices of Toast perfectly cooked and served with caramelized Banana. The caramelized Banana was expertly done, the sweetness was spot on. It was sweet but not cloyingly so. The Toast was fluffy-soft in the middle but we did not like bready edges. We thought it was a little to dense and would prefer something lighter in texture. The portion was well-justified with the price though.

One of the easiest ways to find good local eats is to follow the crowd, especially when the place is tucked in the residential neighborhood or off the track. We were succumbed to the large and seemingly inviting facade of Jia Shi Restaurant (家式饭店). The Chinese restaurant at Lembah Permai has never failed to attract a great crowd especially during weekends; the menu is huge and has everything that suits all age groups. The heat-intolerant can opt to dine-in at the fully air-conditioned room while those who prefer a more outdoorsy ambiance could opt to sit at the al-fresco dining area, facing the serene green park. The service is brisk and prices are reasonable, we'd definitely love to return more- be it a casual family dinner or for a special occasion (with the family).

Without doubt the dish the rings the best when it comes to Hakka cuisine will be Thunder Tea Rice, or simply known as Lei Cha (擂茶) due to its pungent and greenish taste but somehow the version at Hakka Tree managed to tame us, particularly the fried version. When the fried brown rice is mixed with all the other compounded ingredients, it gives a smooth and refreshing taste, coupled with a natural and delectable fragrance. The Thunder Tea Rice Soup version on the other hand, is more of a classic Lei Cha. Pour the soup accordingly based on your tolerance on the greenish taste.

Australian Cuisine hasn't had much exposure in Penang but we hope that will change with the opening of The Shed in Straits Quay. The Australian-influenced Pub & Restaurant offers a vast selection of grill meats as well as some Burgers and Pasta. The setup is more of a bistro with a stage behind (live music performances are available on certain days); those who prefer a more outdoorsy ambiance with cold sea breeze could opt to dine-in at the sea-front while those who prefer to sit nearer to the stage could opt for inside. The atmosphere is relaxed and casual, most suitable to chill out with friends/ family over a few helpings of beers and wines (or even better, pair with their meat-focused dishes). Not a bad place for drinks and casual Australian barbecue meat but we thought the food lacked the "x" factor (not that we weren't pleased with the quality, just that the probability of returning is not high). The Shed Aussie Pub & Restaurant can be found right next to Spasso Milano, previous tenant was Weissbrau German Bistro.
