Something closer to Chinese flavours is the Biang Biang Inspired Noodle (RM18) that reminds me of spicy pan mee. A simple yet extravagantly flavoured dish loaded with Szechuan chilli oil and toasted peanuts which is the epitome of soul food for me.

Our top pick goes to the moist, braised-till-tender beef brisket stuffed within fluffy steamed pao. Generous cut of meat too! Summerkid personally enjoyed the Kim.Chi.Chicken. Mildly spicy, with sharp flavours of kimchi cut through in between crunchy, juicy bites of fried chicken chunks.

Soup is pack with flavour, you can taste the rice wine, heat from the ginger, slightly fragrant from soy sauce, sweetness from the clamp. It is indeed a satisyfying bowl for your lunch. It would taste even better if it is on rainy day as a sip of the soup could keep your tummy warm.

The Char Kuey Teow was really good. I can understand why many food bloggers rated Lai Foong to have one of the Top 10 Fried Kuey Teow in downtown KL. The noodles were well cooked and tasty, came accompanied with egg + cockles + fishcakes + Chinese sausages + lard + prawns + taugeh. Here, when you order LARGE, you’d get LARGE, Lots of noodles. I ate it all anyway since I was really hungry. Burp!

Roti Babi, 11 ringgit There were several dishes that were popular here and one of them is the Roti Babi. Just by looking around, you’d be able to see this dish on almost every other table. On a personal Burnt Cheese Cake (RM 16) is dessert that we found it to be special. We were told it was a housemade, and the definition burnt introduced a slight pleasant caramelized taste into the rich and dense cheese cake. A piece of wonder to enjoy. Order South China Sea as it seems crowds favorite @ RM 36. Serve with 63 degree poached egg, housemade hash and salsa. Quite a huge chunk of salmon that is serve, looks great in the picture. It is under season, quite pale in flavour and overcook too. Mix of salsa is a bit confusing, filled with apple, capsicum and the fried hash that looks like being fried in a long serving oil that gives such colour and quite at the base plate. I try to finish my salmon, and I guess I gave up along the way. Turns out to be quite disappointing.

Verdict: A solid bowl of beef noodles, and I can see why people have been flocking to the place for decades. It’s hearty, it’s comforting, and it’s substantial. Most impressive were the beef balls, which were so springy you can practically use them as ping pong balls – not a trace of tendon or whatnot left. The noodles were al dente and slathered in the savoury meat sauce.

We ordered Beef Mix Noodles (牛杂肉丸) RM10.00 that serves with a bowl of rice noodles (grounded beef as toppings) and a bowl of soup with assorted beef parts in it. The beef was tender and juicy, soup or broth was clear yet very rich in taste, overall taste like having a bowl of Bakso (Indonesian Beef Noodles) instead of the Pho Bo (Vietnamese Beef Noodles) that dashes some extra leaves and limes as flavouring.

Crispy Chicken with Creme Sauce, 21 ringgit. This was similar to the creamy pesto sauce dish we’ve had previously. I remember liking that one and was looking for something similar, so I decided to give this dish a go. Pasta and sandwiches were not of interest to me today, so yea. This was delicious. The crispy boneless chicken bits and the creamy sauce complimented each other well. The chicken on its own, would have been pretty dry, however, add on the creamy sauce and you would get a burst of flavors and textures. The creme sauce itself came with spices and a lil milky sweetness, it had an overall tasty flavor to it. It resembled thick butter chicken sauce but totally different in flavor. Overall, a delicious dish. Loved it.

A hearty meal that is a staple for most local Chinese families, the Hokkien mee RM9.50 is presented on a banana leaf-lined plate and is ultra-popular largely because of oodles of prawns, pork, squid and generous helpings of lard fritters. The mee is thoroughly enjoyable on its own but for locals, the canister of sambal belacan on each table is one of Restoran Kim Lian Kee’s primary attractions (our personal favourite as well)! 😉

Cajun Butter Shrimp, 19 ringgit. The rice bowl was simply yummy! It tasted like a combination of tasty fried rice + sweet buttery sauce + 6, 7 medium sized prawns + egg + crunchy crumbs. Very nice. I truly enjoyed this dish. My friend and I, between the two of us and the first few spoons of this rice bowl – you’d here ‘omaaaaagod’, ‘ yummmmmm’, ‘this is gooood’ … yup, that sums up how much we enjoyed it. Since I decided to pass on the fine print, consider me surprised. I was especially so to find the thick, sweet butter sauce in the rice and at the bottom of the bowl and they provided me with plenty, enough for me to slurp it up. When you mix it all up, for me at least – it tasted like yummy fried rice with sweet, gooey butter sauce gravy and chewy prawn + egg. I’d certainly go for this dish again.

Hainanese Chicken Chop RM16.90, another signature in Luckin Kopi. Tender, juicy thick cut of chicken, breaded and deep fried to crispy, golden brown on the outside. Dressed in a bed of tomato-ish sweet gravy, sided with wedges. Buttermilk Sauce Chicken Chop and Salted Egg Chicken Chop from the same section seem promising too!

We also shared the Mee goreng Muthu (RM9.90), their version of the mee goreng mamak. Served piping hot, the fried yellow noodles was moist and full of flavour. Usually, the one we have at our local mamak only has tofu and vegetables, but this comes with prawns and sliced chicken too. An excellent plate of noodles!

Pizza is surely a favourite on the menu and I sampled a slice. It was authentic, thin crust with fresh topping sauce.

Reasons to visit Luce Osteria: you can’t go wrong ordering just about anything here but the three dishes that will last in happy dreams for weeks to come are the swordfish – Filetto Di Pesce Spada, gnocchi – Chicche Della Nonna Alla Sorrentina and risotto – Risotto ai Funghi Porcini. One of the few Italian restaurants in KL to serve pork. Pleasant setting with multiple dining areas. Please try the chef’s Zabaione – this will make him very happy and honour his nonna in the process.

Again, do make a reservation as you're probably not allowed to even enter if you're planning to walk in. According to the staffs, you may want to visit on weekdays for happy hour where the crowd is lesser and walk-ins is usually doable without a reservation.

Located in Petaling Street aka Chinatown, what was previously a brothel is now PS150, a cocktail bar headed by famed bartender Angel Ng. PS150 may still maintain much of its pre-war building’s character, making it one of the most worthwhile visiting bar in KL. The entrance is dimly lit, and you'll have to go through a series of creaky wooden doors to finally get to the main bar area which has the theme color of red!

Mingle Cafe 名樂閣 Restaurant

55, Jalan Sultan Kuala Lumpur City Centre 50000 Kuala Lumpur Malaysia

It’s becoming more and more difficult to eat well and healthy these days. At Cafe 55, we do not pretend to be a healthy or organic cafe, but we do take pains to source for the most healthy options, reducing sugar and carbohydrates as much as possible and totally no preservatives and food flavourings/MSG. Throughout our journey, we will from time to time introduce new items to our menu where we will serve food that all of us can eat everyday.

For just RM10, you get to try out their 62 °C Hainan Breakfast. It is like the telur goyang we always have in kopitiam or mamak stall, but Cafe 55 presents it with modern twist. Double poached egg, placed on top of toasted bread sandwiched with homemade kaya and butter. Finished with shoyu dressing and scallion.

Croque Monsieur, 20 ringgit. The Croque Monsieur is their popular dish and came recommended. It consisted of bread, turkey ham, cheddar cheese, mornay (cheese sauce?). This was delicious. Do make sure you have an empty stomach though because this sure is filling. I was halfway through and already felt stuffed. So, be warned. The melted cheese on the top – I am soooo a fan. Just biting into that layer of cheese + bread + turkey ham … yummmm!

It was pretty fun hanging out with bunch of friends at The Deceased, except the place was a little bit hot because there was no A/C at the al fresco area. But I think the cocktails were pretty good. My personal favorites? Tea of Oblivion and The Medium.

Old China Cafe Restaurant

11 Jalan Balai Polis 50000 Kuala Lumpur Malaysia

Welcome to our café-restaurant that serves Southeast Asian cuisine that is a combination of Straits Chinese and Malay delicacies. The premises was formerly the guild hall of the Selangor & Federal Territory Laundry Association. The guild was set up at the turn of the century and moved to this part of Chinatown in the 1920s. The two large mirrors that face each other are traditional feng shui mirrors that the Chinese believe would perpetually reflect good luck. Many of the architectural details of the building have remained unchanged, even the doors to the kitchen still have wooden latches. This type of pre-war shophouses may not exist much longer. Several units in the neighbourhood (Jalan Balai Polis, Jalan Panggong and Jalan Petaling) have either been demolished or renovated beyond recognition, in order to keep up with modern times. Old China Café tries to maintain a semblance of the Chinese community’s old social life is fading into history. The patina of age contributes to the ambience. This café is to remind us of the hard work carried out by the early Chinese settlers of Kuala Lumpur way back in 1857 when tin was first mined in Ampang. Their labour benefited KL greatly and laid the foundation for a successful commercial centre.

My friend gave me a nice lunch treat - set lunch Nasi Lemak Chicken with Iced Lemon Tea - MYR 14.90++. I kept almost all the rice for another friend because I am cutting down on rice. This lemon tea is very special because it seems like they blended a lemon and mixed it with tea so the drink is frothy.
