The States are a long way from Penang, but guess what? Just around the corner at the quaint neighborhood of Lembah Permai in Tanjung Bungah, you can have some of America's best breakfast and barbecue right here in the island! We have a selection of dishes on our menu that ranges from bagels, Southern biscuits and omelettes for breakfast, to something heavier for brunch like our burritos and platters. And if you need a little caffeine boost for the day, we also have baristas who are committed to sering you only the best coffee.

We had BYOB (RM 14.90), a homemade pork patty which you can choose to add other toppings such as cheese, mushrooms, salsa and other ingredients at additional cost. Seasoning of the patty was alright and the sauces done well to give the taste an uplifting. Overall quite a satisfying burger to have in the morning.

The Poke Bowl on the other hand, was beyond amazing. The Rice was infused with Pesto and they were very generous with the condiments. The concoction turned out to be a little sweet but it was completely bearable. We love the Pesto-element and thought the dish was very palatable. Not the ordinary Poke Bowl that you can find elsewhere but Javu's rendition is surely one of the better ones.

Intrigued by its name, we ordered a Chicken Tagine (RM 32) and Chicken Piri Piri (RM 22), a Moroccan specialty served with rice & couscous and a sousvide whole boneless chicken marinated in piri piri sauce respectively. The classic North African chicken tagine had 4 decent chicken stew in curry alike gravy, though it is lighter than the conventional Malaysian curries. However to our dismay, the promised couscous on the menu description was missing! As we were in a hurry, we did not bother to ask.

One of the easiest ways to find good local eats is to follow the crowd, especially when the place is tucked in the residential neighborhood or off the track. We were succumbed to the large and seemingly inviting facade of Jia Shi Restaurant (家式饭店). The Chinese restaurant at Lembah Permai has never failed to attract a great crowd especially during weekends; the menu is huge and has everything that suits all age groups. The heat-intolerant can opt to dine-in at the fully air-conditioned room while those who prefer a more outdoorsy ambiance could opt to sit at the al-fresco dining area, facing the serene green park. The service is brisk and prices are reasonable, we'd definitely love to return more- be it a casual family dinner or for a special occasion (with the family).

We did not the Dashi Tamagoyaki to be good but it turned out to be very delicious and we must concur that it exceeded our expectation. The texture was perfect and the Egg Rolls were reasonably seasoned with discernible Dashi flavor.

Kanitama (RM 15) is the Japanese style Omelette filled with crab meats. This is an off menu item in the restaurant. We enjoyed the fluffiness of the egg, but its sauce appears more appealing to the patrons who enjoy strong umami taste. On top of that, crabs sticks were used instead of crabs meats, though we could not tell how the taste will be if real crab meats were used.

First among the mains that we sampled was the dish of Mussels with Ravioli. Prepared in a bright homemade tomato sauce with hint of white wine and seafood flavor, the dish which isn’t on the menu was simple but delicious.

Noble Experiment - Penang Restaurant

6 & 8, Lebuh Lembah Permai 4 11200 Tanjung Bungah Penang

The prohibition era of the 1920’s was a call to ban and inadvertently end the alcoholic beverage industry with the intent to cure society’s ills and to increase general public morals. Hence, it was nicknamed “the noble experiment”. But as it turns out, humans have no problem committing societal ills all on their own, even without beer goggles on. Our restaurant’s name pays a celebratory homage to the debunking and failure of the “experiment”. We are here to prove that alcohol, served in a manner that encourages an appreciation for flavor and skill, paired with good food and meaningful relationships, can, to the contrary, make for not only a great time but a beneficial one! So join us in rejoicing that alcohol is here to stay, and learn that when consumed responsibly, alcohol can turn even the most pious frown upside down.

One of the best-sellers- Jungle Bird... a concoction of Plantation Dark Rum, Campari and Pineapple Juice. It has the tropical refreshing nature but the alcohol may be a little too strong to my liking... would prefer to be balanced with a hint of acidity

One of the recommended dishes is the Oxtail Stew with Mash. The dish consists of tender meat, carrot, barley, and peas in an aromatic stew prepared with selected spices. Served along with the homemade mash, this dish with a whisper of peppercorn is a pure comfort. Definitely a hearty dish for diners to return for.

We noticed most diners had their Ipoh Curry Mee on our visit, we were probably the only table that had both Koay Teow Th'ng and Ipoh Curry Mee. The broth of the Ipoh Curry Mee seems to be rather diluted in flavor but creamier than usual. It lacked of the salty-element and the overall taste was compromised. Fragrance-wise was alright but the lack of salinity spoilt the overall taste. Meat lovers can satisfy their crave for meat at additional cost of Rm 4.50... to top some home-made Roasted Pork Belly. Their Koay Teow Th'ng on the other hand, was mediocre. Both flavor and texture of the Koay Teow did not stand out, unlikely a bowl of Koay Teow Th'ng that could leave me a deep impression. I'd give it a miss if I were you.
