Price wise, this comes cheaper than Da Dong and the waiting time is probably shorter as well. It is a good alternative if you want to have a competent bowl of prawn noodles in Joo Chiat.

The stock was more crustaceany and prawny, plus thick and layered, but not so sweet. The prawns were really fresh and sweet, so much so that you could pull the flesh off the shell very easily. Wah Kee was still the gold standard, of the prawny rather than porky broth as it was here, although this was really not bad.

Personally, we prefer the old Sinpopo where it feels more family orientated. The selection of dishes for the new Sinpopo is rather limited and may not be suited to everyone's taste. While the main courses are a tad pricey, the desserts such as the cakes are worth trying.

The banh mi had varied and complementary texture and flavours. The baguette was crispy, the vegetables were crunchy, the chicken cold cut was savoury, the floss was savoury sweet, and the pate was fresh and sweet, and bound everything together. The whole thing tasted savoury and fresh. The coffee was standard Vietnamese, bitter and strong.

Overall, Homeground Coffee is a lovely and homely space, they do great coffee and have a decent selection of food to choose from, and coupled with being in the stunning area of Katong, you have another fantastic cafe to choose from in the neighbourhood.

The pretty cake was gently and flowery sweet, very delicate and layered, with many different textures, from the fruity guava and elderflower mousse encasing three different layers – diced fresh pears, pink guava jelly and a buttery and crumbly cookie base. The latte was so so though, very milky.

Homeground Coffee Roasters is a great addition to Katong if you ever need a caffeine fix in this precinct. While the space is not that friendly in terms of tables for big groups, it may just be a good idea as well to enjoy that intimate coffee conversation with your partner or close friend.

This place had really long queues when it first started out; it’s not so bad now. I could really taste the fragrance in the grainy and moist rice, of coconut milk and pandan leaves, with some lemak and some sweetness. The sambal really complemented – very spicy and fragrant of ikan bilis, onions and rempah, good enough to eat on its own.

Overall, I like the Ayam Goreng Berempah at Dickson Nasi Lemak. Every element on the plate is executed well, and despite the slightly higher price than usual hawker stalls, it makes up for the huge fried chicken. Bookmark this if you are next in Joo Chiat.
