Yee Fung Laksa 怡豐茶室 Restaurant

127, Jalan Gaya Kota Kinabalu 88000 Kota Kinabalu Sabah, Malaysia

Since opening its doors some ten years ago, Kedai Kopi Yee Fung has become a popular breakfast and lunch joint for KK folks. And it comes as no surprise as the coffee shop serves a delicious variety of Malaysian favourites at affordable prices. Its specialty is the curry laksa; thin noodles in a curry-based soup complemented with prawns and shredded chicken. Also highly recommended is the claypot chicken rice. As the name suggests, this dish is served in a claypot, hot off the stove. IT is a wonderful combination of chicken, mushrooms and salted fish served with rice prepared in a dark sauce. Also on the menu is the famed local delicacy, ngiu chap (beef noodle soup). Whatever your choice, we guarantee you will enjoy a satisfying meat.

Yee Fung Ngiu Chap (Mixed Beef Noodle) RM8.50 – Beef broth serves with flat noodle, beef slice, beef tripe, beef stomach, beef tendon and etc. The broth was smooth and crystal clear, have a strong beefy taste in it which feels exactly like having authentic soup tulang (Indonesian beef bone soup), except that we have free noodles selection and extra beef toppings for this one.

The restaurant is renowned for three dishes: Yee Fung Laksa (怡丰叻沙), Yee Fung Ngau Chap (怡丰牛杂) and Claypot Chicken Rice (沙煲鸡饭).

Unlike the Penisular Malaysia style laksa, Yee Fung Laksa uses thin noodles akin vermicelli, and served along in a broth made with the coconut and curry, rendering it a mild coconut fragrance. Drizzle some lime to give it some tangy sensation. On top of the regular meat slices and prawns, the addition of fried egg slices gave it some unique taste portfolio.

Overall, the food here is good, service is good but food serving is a little bit slow, environment is comfortable and price is reasonable too.

As a first timer in Little Italy, we asked the waiter for any recommendations and he immediately pointed out “Spaghetti Al Nero di Sepia” RM32.80 as their signature dish and its a must try. We took a huge chomp and the result turns out to be very positive, spaghetti is definitely homemade and al-dente, seafood is fresh and well seasoned with various herbs & spices, can obviously taste the fragrance of the squid ink which is perfectly synced with the whole dishes.

I got 100% satisfaction with my breakfast here, the price is around RM5 to RM11, take a look that the ingredients that they included into a bowl of noodle, it's GENEROUS! and taste SUPERB! It's a good start of my day.

Another signature dish from Seng Hing, Tom Yum!!! The tom yum at Seng Hing is quite different from the normal tom yum gong which you can find in Thailand. I think the tom yum at Seng Hing, or the whole KK is the improvised version by the local people. The tom yum soup is added with some 'coconut milk' or what we called 'san-tan' here in Malaysia. You just have to give this a try, it is spicy, a bit sourish with a rich aroma of 'san-tan', thumbs up!! The one in the photo is 'tom yum mee hun' with prawns.

Another type of Fried Tuaran Noodles with Rice Wine. The Rice Wine flavour was strong and that dish was good for me, but my mom prefer the dry fried Tuaran Mee more!

Jungle Book (RM 18) was what I had for that day lunch. Though the presentation of the waffle was impressive but the taste was a tad lackluster. The texture was soggy and doughy, but luckily it was salvaged by the banana toppings and ice cream. Nevertheless, the peanut butter cream was too surfeiting and ended up I put them aside. It was an average waffle

Well, the duck breast meat was slightly tough and difficult to chew, and I would prefer the breast milk to be in sliced thinner. However, the taste was alight with more lean meat on the breast meat, something which I prefer. The duck breast sits on a bed of Bario (a type of Sarawak rice) risotto, which exhibited an unique fragrance but it was not risotto definitely due to the lacking of creaminess or richness of typical risotto should have. When eating along the duck breast with the sauteed vegetables (mushroom, french beans and corns), sweet potato puree, it tasted great.

The Polo Bun (RM 1.50 each) has a soft and fluffy texture with a slight crisp layer at one corner of the bun, and filled with a nice pineapple jam which is not overly sweet and just hit the bull's eye. Almost every table in the coffee shop would have polo bun on it, proving its popularity.

Aha, and here comes our main course after a long waiting journey (10-15 minutes), the Chubs Signature Pork Belly Platter RM29.80 serves with grill pork, mashed potato, and coleslaw. Right after one bite plus chow down to the throat, we immediately identify this dish is a must try on our list – The grilled pork was scrumptious, very juicy and tender, finely marinated and well seasoned, tastes a little bit of honey sweet and peppery, hard to describe the overall taste because it’s just too awesome! If you agree Nando’s is the best grill chicken in town, then we would suggest that the Chubs is the best pork grill in town, this is exactly what we feel after having Chub grills! 😉

Price is relatively expensive compared to West Malaysia but is a norm in Kota Kinabalu. Above meal for one person which included a bowl of pork ribs and blanched vegetables cost RM 16.50. In terms of taste, the herbal soup has a light but herby taste. Meanwhile, the meat from the pork ribs are tender and enjoyable. Overall, a decent choice to dine in here should you need a quick fix of Bak Kut Teh in Sabah.
