Mount Tahan, with a height of 2,187 meters above sea level, is the highest point in Peninsular Malaysia. It is a to-go place for many seasoned hikers who target the highest mountains in Malaysia. There are two official routes to summit Mount Tahan: via Merapoh Trail which is the shorter and easier route, typically consists of a 4-days-3-nights return trip; On the other hand, Kuala Tahan Trail would take 7 days if you descent via Merapoh route, and more if you are doing a return trip back to Kuala Tahan.

Two trails lead to the summit of Mount Tahan. The Kuala Tahan Trail starts in Kuala Tahan village and takes approximately one week there and back. The shorter Merapoh Trail is less scenic, but most climbers finish in four days. Another third route combines entering on the Merapoh Trail before returning along the Kuala Tahan Trail.

I was invited to join a group of strangers – which I had no problem with – and the fee was quite cheap at RM150 per person (nett). But then, at that price which was only for the guide and probably some other stuff such as the registration fee, insurance, first night accommodation, first day’s breakfast and lunch pack, I had to bring EVERYTHING on my own – tent, sleeping bag, clothes, food stuff, cookery, utensils etc.

As happy as we were to reach the top, the feeling that we had another eight hour-hike back to Kem Kor ahead of us was dreadful. We hit Kem Botak first, to eat something, pack and begin our descent. No matter what people tell you, the journey back is always harder than going up. There is more impact to your leg muscles and knees that are already beat from days of hiking. Thinking of home makes it all easier.

With the cost of the porter being RM1,000 per day, we would not be hiring any porter, and I would also like to test my own ability. How can I call myself a hiker if I can’t even carry my own bag up the mountain, right?

Height : 7175 feet (2187 meter) Location : Taman Negara Sungai Relau (Merapoh) Usually it takes 4D3N Distance : about 13.2 KM (one way) from park to Kuala Juram via 4x4, referring to the GPS log about 16 KM from Kuala Juram to Gunung Tahan Summit (one way) hiking. (I am wondering why the distance base on GPS log is much different with the signboards. Forget about the distance show, referring to the time frame might allow you to judge the actual distance) GPS Coordinate : N4.63302 E102.23505
