Mei Yuen Restaurant’s slightly run-down appearance adds the charm of a bygone era to the food they serve. Their wonton mee is not immediately impressive, rather its selling point is how simple and basic it is. Consisting of just egg noodles, sliced char siew, a few wontons and caixin, Mei Yuen Restaurant’s signature dish gives you a really old school taste.
I thought quite a nice wanton mee, in an old school coffeeshop. The noodles were of the thicker type, bitey, in a sauce that had some sesame oil fragrance and ketchup sweetness. The char siew was thick, bitey, sweet and just slightly caramelised. The wantons were quite full, with nicely marinated meat and silky wanton skin. Sweet and slightly herbally soup. Overall nice old school Singaporean style wanton mee.
