The popularity of Tan Xiang Fish Soup is evident from the perpetual queue that often snakes its way around the stall. However, the wait is absolutely worth it, and what's more, it's not uncommon to spot Ben Yeo himself helping out at the stall from time to time.
The traditional-style pancake was made from very nice and fragrant batter, chewy and bouncy, and crispy at the edges. This was as good as the old Tanglin Halt one. The peanut filling was really fragrant and crunchy, and the peanut butter added a nice richness and butteriness. Good stuff by a young hawker.
Hui Ming Fishball Mushroom Noodle is a hidden gem Fishball Stall located at Blk 8 Lor 7 Toa Payoh. They are quite popular in the neighborhood, with long lines every day, yet they are not on the radar of any other bloggers!
The special Hainan snack – yi bua – had a sticky and thick soon kueh-like skin and an ondeh ondeh-like filling of moist (but not molten) and sweet shredded coconut filling with ginger, sesame seeds and gula melaka, with a slightly savoury oily undertone of I think peanut oil. Quite nice.
Kurobuta pork, while ubiquitous in restaurants around Singapore, is still an uncommon sight in the hawker setting. Adding a touch of indulgence to the humble Mee Hoon Kway, Jiak Song Mee Hoon Kway is launching a limited edition Kurobuta Mee Hoon Kway ($5.50).
