Last but not least, you can’t just tell people that you went to Big Tree Foot (大树脚) without having their signature beverage – Red Bean Ice Smoothies (红豆冰) which costs only RM2.50 per cup. Tastes mild sweet, flaky and irresistible strong red bean flavor, this long-forgotten cold beverage is definitely the best duo with Yong Tau Fu (quench thirst and wash any greasy feel), not to mention it just feels awesome drinking cold stuff under any hot sunny days! 😉

Do order their asam laksa here as well where they are really good too. The flavourful broth with the slurpilicious noodles are definitely well paired with their ytf. Addictively good .

You can't deny that the cafe has a rustic and quirky charm about it but it's a place you'd probably end up liking because of the decor and ambience more than the food. When we were there on a (school holiday) Monday at peak lunch time, the place was pretty empty with just one other table occupied. This is probably a far cry from its manic days when they first opened and were blazing through social media. But still a decent place to hang out over a cuppa (and soak in the quirky interior) or to rest your legs (for north or southbound travellers) ^_* I can't help but wonder why only Burps & Giggles remain to this day....I can only guess that having three cafes in the same row is stretching it a bit, especially so when customers dwindle down after the initial hoo-ha. I suppose that charm and arty ambience can only get you so far but when all is done and dusted, it's the (consistently good) food that will keep you in the game in the long haul! ;)

If you are the stereotypical type of people thinking to eat Dim Sum whenever you are visiting Ipoh, try Chef Fatt's place next time, at least for a change. The Dim Sum restaurant is a stone's throw distance away from the famous establishments of Foh San, Ming Court and Yoke Fook Moon Restaurant. Stepping in the place feels like you are visiting a Cha Chan Teng (Hong Kong-styled cafe) in Hong Kong- closely arranged tables and chairs, nostalgic wall tiles, slippery floor tiles and classic Chinese restaurant setting. Once you are seated, you will be approached by the ladies offering trays of piping hot Dim Sum dishes and recommended some signature dishes or best sellers of theirs. It feels like dining in an intimate space in the neighborhood; pretty decent quality and reasonably priced, a good alternative to those bigger establishments.

Reluctantly change plan to Foh San Dim Sum with a not so happy mood. We already know that despite being a highly-mentioned restaurant, the not-so-good comments they have are a lot too. Established since 1971, this award-winning restaurant is undeniably one of the first few eateries that will cross the mind of many when asked “what to eat in Ipoh for breakfast”. We tried two out of their six options: ‘Jin Hiong Mai’ (煎香米) and ‘Chao Kap Dai’ (炒及底) @ RM5 and RM5.50 respectively. The crowd’s favorite – ‘Jin Hiong Mai’ is a fried vermicelli noodle dish with gravy, while ‘Chao Kap Dai’ is a fried noodle with all the ingredients available at their stall such as pork slices, prawns and fish cakes. Both are equally delicious in their own right.

We had the Cantonese Fried Noodles in Egg Gravy and the Fried Yellow Noodles and Kuey Teow with Soy Sauce. Both noodles are equally good and there is a secret ingredient to it – Fresh Prawn Broth. This secret ingredient is what makes the locals willing to wait for at least 45 minutes to an hour for their fried noodles.

Both the Chicken Chop and Pork Chop comes in a Tomato based gravy and with some onions, peas and fried potatoes. The meat cut was huge for both and the price of RM 12 was definitely cheap. The meat was very tender and both were coated in eggs. The flavours were generally quite light and that's good as the sauce did not overpower the natural flavours of the meat. Definitely a place that is worth visiting for Hainanese food when you're in Ipoh.

Here comes our first bowl of Sansui Ta Fu Fa RM1.60 which features plain tau fu fa drizzled with lots of gula Melaka sauce (palm sugar). It has a very soft and silky texture, mild soya bean flavor, great enough to serve as an everyday treat (cost per bowl as dessert), but frankly, it doesn’t give us as much first impact as the Tau Fu Fa which we had in Woong Kee.
