There's a hidden gem tucked in the Malay hawker center at Sri Tanjung Pinang, off the main street to Straits Quay (beside Island Plaza). The unpretentious and frill-free stall boasts over a Middle Eastern-influenced delicacy... Kacang Phool, a type of addictive meat sauce served with Toast. While they are well-known for their Kacang Phool, they are not a one-trick pony; they offer a wide range of local Malay delicacies namely Roti Jala, Roti Bakar with Kaya Butter etc. If you need suggestion or have any questions over their products, the very articulate Malay owner is more than happy to assist you. To find Roti Bakar Kacang Phool.... from Jalan Tanjung Tokong turn into Jalan Sri Tanjung Pinang right next to Island Plaza (the route to Straits Quay), turn left into the first junction and drive for another minute. The hawker center is on your right and Roti Bakar Kacang Phool is the first stall, facing the main road.

The roti bakar was a thick slice of specially ordered custom made loaf, buttered and lightly toasted. What made it special was instead of the usual toast with butter and kaya, the roti was served with a type of gravy (cooked with kacang parang/ broad beans) call Kacang Phool, which was derived from the Middle Eastern dish known as Foul Medammas.
