Skillet At 163 Restaurant

163, Fraser Place No. 10 Jalan Perak 50450 Kuala Lumpur

We are a cuisine-agnostic restaurant. This means that we don’t limit ourselves to any labels; but instead, we are a restaurant that injects wild ideas into our food. Executive Head Chef, Raymond Tham, combines gastronomic ingenuity with diverse ingredients to create bold and familiar flavour blends. As a trained pastry chef, one should expect exciting flavours in their palates.

CHICKEN Chasseur | Spatzle | Autumn Vegetables CHICKEN, main course that you will hardly go wrong with. Fried chicken leg done right – crispy crackly skin, shielding juicy, tender meat beneath. What raise our attention are these homemade German spaetzle, a type of pasta made from eggs, flour, water and salt. Mini and doughy, goes well with chasseur sauce served along.

Next is the Lobster, an absolutely flawless dish, both in terms of presentation and flavours. Extremely pleasing to the eye, the butter poached lobster is embellished with celery, apple, edible flowers and rutabaga (swede) with mascarpone. To go with the lobster, a sauce made from fermented apples with fish broth is poured tableside, finished with a few drops of kombu oil. Beautiful, delicate flavours.. loved it!

Chicken @ RM 45, add on with bentong ginger and lotus crips. As for this dish, I have no idea what to say as for us being local, we had too much street food and I felt that I am just eating “atas” Hainanese Chicken. not much twist of it. Too normal for my liking even knowing the meat is sous vide.

It is definitely good, ‘sedap’ but it is not the best there is out there. The appeal here is the good food + affordable price point. Who can resist that combination, right?? It is ‘mamak’ food at its best. Food-wise, I was happy with everything except the Ayam Madu. I was expecting tender chicken with thick, sweetened honey syrup coating but here, it was done differently. Tender chicken it was but the ‘madu’ part was missing. In its place was some other gravy with onions. Besides that, food was yummy. The curry was thick and flavorful, the fried chicken was chewy yet tender. Bendi and cabbage were awesome additions in making both plates wholesome.

Their Sambal Fish was so delicious. It was truly one of the best that I have tasted. Been so long that I had food this good. Truly miss these places as it has been so long. The fish was slightly on the spicy side and came with some thick gravy. 10/10 is my rating for this. Similarly, their Fish Roe was another one that won my heart. Absolutely delicious stuff and I would rate it at 9/10.

Verdict? Never go to Kudu during Ramadhan month. The chicken is extremely hard - presumably from reheating the food due to low demand during Ramadhan month. Oh the chicken is rock hard I assure you can kill someone by throwing at them. The okra is clearly undercooked it wouldn't break apart when you bite it! Another colleague ordered the chicken drumstick, it is so small like which is as big as the Eclipse mint box! So pathetic.

Old China Cafe Restaurant

11 Jalan Balai Polis 50000 Kuala Lumpur Malaysia

Welcome to our café-restaurant that serves Southeast Asian cuisine that is a combination of Straits Chinese and Malay delicacies. The premises was formerly the guild hall of the Selangor & Federal Territory Laundry Association. The guild was set up at the turn of the century and moved to this part of Chinatown in the 1920s. The two large mirrors that face each other are traditional feng shui mirrors that the Chinese believe would perpetually reflect good luck. Many of the architectural details of the building have remained unchanged, even the doors to the kitchen still have wooden latches. This type of pre-war shophouses may not exist much longer. Several units in the neighbourhood (Jalan Balai Polis, Jalan Panggong and Jalan Petaling) have either been demolished or renovated beyond recognition, in order to keep up with modern times. Old China Café tries to maintain a semblance of the Chinese community’s old social life is fading into history. The patina of age contributes to the ambience. This café is to remind us of the hard work carried out by the early Chinese settlers of Kuala Lumpur way back in 1857 when tin was first mined in Ampang. Their labour benefited KL greatly and laid the foundation for a successful commercial centre.

My best September discovery was the incredible (and I don’t use the word incredible often) RM20 nett “Lunch Munch!” at The Kedai Kopi Journal. When RM12 can only get you a drink at cafes and when a fruit juice in a hotel is RM18-25, having a semi-buffet spread which includes snacks, appetisers, soup, breads, fresh fruits, a chocolate fondue, ice cream and desserts PLUS ONE main course of your choice is a steal! Especially so when it is in a hotel right smack in the golden triangle of Bukit Bintang. And more so when you discover that the main course are princely in portion and loaded with quality ingredients!

Steamed sea grouper with cabbage in premium soy sauce Another must try here is of course the steamed sea grouper. The sea grouper fish is well steamed and served with the cabbage with chef’s signature premium soy sauce. A nice dish to enjoy especially the flaky texture of the fish and fragrant blend of soy.

Anyways, the steamed buns here were real good. I loved it. It was soft, tender and springy, with a lil bit of bouncy effect. Niceeeeeee! The Pork Bao came with a juicy square chunk of sake braised pork belly. There is a layer of fat on the top, which I generally am not a fan of and so, I removed that and the rest of the meal was very pleasant. The pork tasted yummy, love the texture – not hard, a lil chewy, mostly tender. There also was a generous amount of preserved greens that looked a lot like seaweeds? Yea and it had a rather unusual taste but complimented the whole dish well. It worked.
