Ask any residents in Sungai Petani on which is one of their favorite childhood snacks and many of them would tell you sweetened Mung Bean Biscuits (Tau Sah Pheah) from "Lao Zi Hao". Long established for more than 50 years, the classic biscuits and pastries made by this traditional confectionery have occupy a place in their heart. While some may have moved out from the quiet town, they would return to buy the biscuits from Lao Zi Hao whenever they are back. The old-school confectionery at Jalan Kuala Ketil has a work shop that allows visitors to have a glance on how the hand-made traditional biscuits are made. While they are known for the sweetened Mung Bean Biscuits, the other classic biscuits are worth trying as well. Expect to see classics like Brown Sugar Biscuits (黄糖饼), Ear Lobe Biscuits (耳朵饼), Horseshoe Biscuits/ Heong Peng (香饼), Walnut Pastry/ Hup Tou Sou (核桃酥), Wife's Biscuits/ Lou Poh Peng (老婆饼) etc. Lao Zi Hao is definitely one of the must-visit places if you happen to drop by this quiet town at Southern Kedah.

Overall, the food here at Tao Xiang Prawn Noodles is tasty, their setting is simple with comfortable clean environment and good service. Price is reasonable with RM 5.00 per bowl and you can request from the owner to add some special ingredient too depending on what they have on that day. During my visit, they have pork meat which goes really well with the Prawn Noodles, of course with extra ingredient, there will be extra charges but still reasonable.
Char Koay Teow is the best when it is fried with charcoal. However, this required much skill set as controlling fire with charcoal is not so easy and the price of charcoal is more expensive than gasoline these days. Therefore, there are not many stalls that still use charcoal to fry Koay Teow. Lau Ee Char Koay Teow is one of the stalls in SP that still frying with charcoal where it maintained the wok aroma with the fresh big prawns. There are the main selling points.

Chicken Rice is one of the Malaysian staple comfort food, everyone has his/her own favorite(s). To pick the best will likely stir up a passionate debate but let's agree to disagree, this hauntingly mouth-watering Malaysian delight is never easy to cook and has no definite recipe to it. For a plate of simple, straight-forward Chicken Rice; navigate your way to Restaurant Green Flow (頂好茶餐室) at Pekan Lama, Sungai Petani (Kedah). This is definitely one of the long-established ones around; with more than 38 years of experience (since 1979), this humble stall has garnered an appreciate following, most coming for their remarkably luscious Chicken (the stall is known as 喜相逢爱芬鸡饭). But a good Chicken Rice is not just about the Chicken, purists will argue that the flavored-Rice and the addictive Chili dip is part of the package.... and this stall has it all.
Moreover, please visit earlier to avoid disappointment, because it selling out fast.
Dry Noodles and Dry Koey Teow here is worth the effort coming here .. !
It's always fun to have a short getaway from home and one of the nearest cities to Penang- Sungai Petani (Kedah), a city that is often overlooked by many. It offers a good selection of traditional delicacies, some can no longer be found in urbanized cities like Penang. For this reason, the quiet town of Sungai Petani makes a great short trip to search for the lost flavors of yesteryears. For a bowl of classic, authentic Hakka Mee, make your way to Yeh Lai Siang Food Court near the old town of Sungai Petani. Possibly the only authentic Hakka Mee in Sungai Petani, this 14-year old noodle stall uses recipes passed down from previous generations to churn out home-made springy, flat noodles. But they are not a one-trick pony, their home-made Dumplings are not be forsaken as well. The Dumpling skin is home-made and the Dumplings are wrapped on the spot. Freshness is of essence here and they take it seriously. This humble stall housed within the classic local food court setting is definitely one of the best to savor the Hakka-influenced delicacy.
整体上来说这里的肉骨茶尚算不错吃,味道也到味。若你也喜爱肉骨茶,不妨前往 “洺家” 一试。
Peng Huat's Koay Teow Th'ng broth was clear with minimalist seasoning... not the type of broth with heavy meat elements. It was refreshing and comforting at the same time, without much burden on the palate, though some would argue that the broth may be a little under-seasoned.
