Old school and good tasting, with small fresh shrimps, tender pork slices and qq fishcakes. The soup was nice and balanced – clear, sweet, slightly peppery, with the flavours of pork and prawn.
Three Sisters Prawn Noodle at Mayflower Market is unassuming. The queue is average for a good stall and the market itself is not so big.
Seek out some comfort-worthy prawn noodles and fried hokkien mee from this humble family-run stall in Ang Mo Kio! Read more.
A food blog from a Singapore-based traveler
This stall in a coffee shop at Ang Mo Kio is opened by the popular roasted duck chain in Malaysia. This is their first outlet in Singapore, ...
The char siew was sweet, sticky and caramelised, although not charred and somewhere between firm and tender in texture.
A hidden gem found in Ang Mo Kio Central! Head on down to treat yourself to a deliciously smoky plate of char kway teow. Read more.
This was a seriously greasy and smoky char kway teow, with a balanced sweet soy sauce, savoury and garlicky flavour, coupled with a very solid wok hei.
Recommended by Miss Tam Chiak, although for their Peking Duck. The soft noodles have been cut up and didn’t have much of a texture. It came in a sweetish soy sauce, and with a sweet and lightly caramelised but slightly tough char siew, and quite normal and again slightly tough roast duck with non crispy skin. Quite average I thought.
Peking Duck in Coffeeshop? Opened by ex-Imperial Treasure chef, Tham’s Roasted Delights serves good roasted meat, including peking duck!
The Hokkien mee was prawny, sticky and very flavourful – the stock was good. Even the chilli had a good hae bi fragrance. Prawns were fresh and sweet. Unexpectedly very nice.
If judging by best value for price paid, there’s nothing like the size or ingredients of these show-stoppers! I’m also amazed by how much seafood Sumo Big Prawn is able to pile into every bowl.
If i am to compare the values, the Crayfish Bee Hoon Soup is definitely of a better value as compared to the Lobster Bee Hoon Soup but the Sumo Big Prawn Bee Hoon Soup is more worth it as it is served with 4 pieces of relatively fresh big prawns at just $8.
laksa looked ok, but taste quite poor in my view
I could not quite understand the persistent long queue right in front of this stall, the Laksa and Lor Mee are not amongst the best ever tasted but I guess, it is the familiarity and comforts of the dishes that kept the customer to keep coming back.
Granted, the broth wasn't anything special, but I'd eat it again.
Altogether a very satisfying, filling yet soothing meal, Cynthea was right – you’ll find yourself cleaning your bowl and drinking down every drop of the tasty broth!
One of the recommended Satay Bee Hoon In Singapore
I can see why Yong Xin 永薪 has developed quite a fanbase and considering how quickly the line moves here, I wouldn’t mind coming down again to join the snaking queue!
If you want some delicious Din Tai Fung-style fried rice without breaking the bank, hurry over to Hong Style Fried Rice which can give Din Tai Fung a run for its money.
Came back a week later to try the dumpling noodles. The egg noodles were really springy and crisp like those from Hong Kong, and coated with a strong mushroom savoury sauce. The dumplings were really chockful of ingredients – shiitake and woodear mushrooms, jicama, water chestnuts and flatfish based on 8 Days, with the salty flatfish the predominant flavour, and a myriad of textures.
The marinara spaghetti is a must-try, but my personal favorite is their carbonara pasta! The spaghetti has a wonderful texture, and the sauce is creamy and tasty! A considerable amount of cheese is also put on top of the meal. I've gone there several times in the evening. I can only advise you to arrive early because they close early.
Soft, smooth, sweet and straightforward. Reasonably eggy, some smokiness, although without much caramelisation.
Belinda’s Pancake is a true gem. We hope that Belinda continues to provide yummy pancakes with a big smile, and keep her father’s legacy alive.
The white carrot cake was nua nua and almost creamy, with the egg fried in, quite flavourful, with very potent chilli.
I can definitely see the reason behind the long lines at Cai Ji Fried Fish Soup. Quality red grouper at affordable prices, fragrant soup, and delicious fried fish? You’ll see me joining one of their queues again someday soon!
Overall, I find that food tastes decent but I'm the one who prefers soup to be more of herb taste and sauce to be more on the savoury side. I love that the food handling especially the intestines is well managed.
Though I have been in this food centre quite often for lunch, this is not amongst the regular choices. It is getting difficult to find a good Fried Kway Teow these days.
Moist and flavourful char kway teow seems almost impossible to achieve, but Lai Heng has done the impossible.
Good Bak Chor Mee is hard to come by, though you can find them it almost every food court of hawker centre in Singapore.
The taste, in fact, is quite similar to the Tai Hwa Pork Noodles at Crawford Lane but the amount of vinegar added is not as excessive.
