This place served some of the best dosa/tosai I have ever tasted, albeit more expensive than usual. Onion Rava Dosa (RM 15) is crispy and tasty, with great chutney. Rava Idly (RM 11.50) is pretty..
For something memorable from MTR 1924, you must try their MTR’s Rava Idli. This particular food item was invented by its founder, Yagnanarayana. During World War II when India was hit by the great Bengal famine resulting in the short supply and rationing of rice, Yagnanarayana modified his idlis with semolina flour (rava) to replace the rice idly turning them into a filling and healthy steamed savoury cakes that go down in history.
Masala Dosa was perfect. I liked the crispiness and texture, Yum!! Oh my god “THE GHEE”!! It adds a great flavour to the dosa. Masala Dosa @ RM 8.50
It is super worth it… So go spice up your life with the yummy dishes of Jaffna here at Yarl..
There is also another signature dish of Mutton Bone Varuval that one simply must order. Thick and rich with deep spiced notes from slow and long hours of cooking to render the mutton bone till oozing with soft gelatinous marrow richness, the varuval is marvelous with rice.
Well, I wanted a sweet appam just for the heck of it, a dessert of some sort to end a satisfying meal and that was exactly what it was. Small, light, fluffy and not overly sweet. I’d order it again. I made a mistake in terms of not immediately eating it and instead I decided to enjoy my warm drink first. Once an appam is served and left to sort of air dry for a bit, it becomes a little herder on the outside and crumbly. So, while it was yummy, I wasnt truly able to enjoy its whole yumminess, my mistake
The ambience here for morning breakfast is just perfect: open air dining on sidewalk, shades provided by nearby tall buildings, and the bustling atmosphere of an Indian breakfast place. Besides..
But the food was good and I enjoyed the thosai a lot.
At a glance, this Sri Paandi's dining area and kitchen area's cleanliness seem to be quite decent.
I liked the fact that the dish came with 4 options for vegetables as oppose to the usual 3. There was spinach, corn + carrot, beetroot and cucumber. The corn + carrot was a rare combination, I cant say I’ve come across it being served at restaurants. I really liked how they cooked it – spicy and packed with flavorful, thick tasty gravy. The Chicken Varuval was awesome but since I couldn’t personally pick out the pieces I wanted, let’s just say there were plenty of bones. Not a big issue though, since I was using my hands to eat, my fingers can work, work, work. The Chicken 65 was a good addition, it provided something crunchy and chewy to an otherwise wet, moist dish. Overall, I had a good time here and yup, I agree, food is good here.
Unfortunately, I found the whole experience rather mediocre. Worst still, I felt like I have wasted my calorie allowance by eating this BLR. The prices are quite reasonable though – RM 6.20 for the rice with refillable veggies and curries and around RM 6 per small plate of protein. But I probably wouldn’t ever return.
A typical Banana Leaf Rice here served with 3 vegetable cost RM6. Price isn’t expensive but not considered cheap either – especially for the vegetable spread we received. While the restaurant rotates its vegetable spread daily, on this particular day the spread was uninspiring and disappointing.
In the end, despite the ok setting – and the Indian-style instrumental covers of Ed Sheehan and Taylor Swift songs – we didn’t really feel that the food justified its price tag. There are better Indian restaurants on the same stretch of road, let alone the wider area. Not bad, and I certainly wouldn’t complain if someone wanted to go there, just not that good.
Panner Butter Masala is our all-time favorite in any North Indian Restaurant and they nailed it here. Panner cooked in a lip-smacking sauce. Yum!! Panner Butter Masala @ RM 14.90
If you want indian food with a home-cooked feel, the food here would totally do it for you. The curry taste was rich and flavorful, the fried chicken was spiced perfectly and the vegetables were delicious. Food was pretty decently priced too. I had a plate of 2 vegetables + 1 meat and my partner had a plate of 3 vegetables + 1 meat and both the dishes together only cost us 16.80 ringgit.
Lawanya is as old as I am (minus a few years) and it is officially one of my favourite place for South Indian food now. The team is efficient, the dining area clean and orderly and the prices fair. If you haven’t tried the food here, I do strongly urge you to do so!
Panner Tikka Masala was damn good. For me, there's something about the Tikka Masala that just makes it such an addictive dish. The lovely vibrant colored sauce with bits of paneer is just pure heaven
I especially loved their pumpkin parathal. It had the usual sweetness that comes with pumpkin while also spicy. You can eat it on its own or have it with rice, it is delicious either way. Their payasam was da bomb, real delicious. There were tiny bits of wheat – sago lookalike that was chewy and it complimented the thick sweetness of the payasam real well. Yum!
We order both Chicken and mutton to try it out and I find that mutton is the best option. Love the small pieces chunks which is just nice to bite on each spoonfull. Love the curry spices mild after taste of it as it is pretty fragrant. One thing is lacking is the spiciness. Just of hint of it at the moment.
That "海南咖啡 Hainanese Coffee" was definitely not too bad, not from a Chinese Kopitiam but rather an Indian Cafe!
Overall, it was a good dinner. Food was good, reasonably priced and big portion, but their service is a nightmare. I hope they would improve their service in the future to serve the customer better.
Their Fried Brinjals however was excellent. I would give their Fried Brinjals 9/10.
Banana Leaf RM 9.00. Served in a banana leaf as a plate size of an A3 , firstly they served you 4 kind of vege as side dish which is refillable .1. chop cucumber, carrot & onion marinated with yogurt 2. Stir fried long beans & carrot with curry leaves & eggs. 3. Dhal curry bowl together with potatoes & vegetable. 4. eggplant cook with chilli oil & onion. Secondly they come with a big bowl of rice where they will serve it on your plate aka banana leaf but you gotta tell them how much of rice you wanted if not they will put a mountain of rice on your plate . Remember to grab some fried papadum and mixing up some curry & sauces around your warm white rice before digging.
Oh Yeah Banana Leaf Brickfields have recently just opened their doors and they have curated a tempting menu to help you experience the best of Indian dishes as well as Mexican…
I decided to be adventurous and indulge in the Ceylonese version of thosai. It was fresh out of the stove, warm, thick and fluffy. If you like your thosai thin and crispy, you best inform them of your preference when you order. I loved it. Tastewise, it tasted like a usual egg thosai except for perhaps some additional flavors. Some spices perhaps?? I usually do not like my thosai thick but it somewhat works here. It felt like I was eating a pancake, an Ceylonese pancake and the egg, ooo that was fluffy too. Yummm! The dish came with a side of fish curry and grated, fried coconut? I do not know what that coconut dish is called but I assume it is a common, staple Sri Lankan dish as every other Ceylonese restaurant I’ve been to serve this this as a side. It was flavorful, I finished it within 5 minutes and requested for a refill 🙂
Another great place to eat biryani rice and this is the Hyderabad Biryani House found in Brickfields. Thank to Chew for recommending this gem to us. Please do check this place out before they shift to other premises though they have a branch in Shah Alam and another coming up in Sentul.
Cheese & Garlic Naan was damn good and it a combo made in heaven for me. YUM!! Must try in Moghul Mahal. Garlic Naan @ RM 5/ Cheese Garlic Naan @ RM 8
It’s quite good for the wallet too – RM6.50 for the standard banana leaf rice and RM6 for the fried chicken – especially when compared to other places in PJ. RECOMMENDED.
Overall, it was a nice experience. They were full house for lunch but food arrived rather quickly. Customer service was good.
Their Vegetarian Banana Leaf Rice Meals were tasty. In fact, for such a reasonable price they serve four variety of vegetables and they were not stingy with the portions. Curries were also served in bowls, so you can have as much as you want in a leisurely pace instead of being worried that the waiter might take it away and place it at another table
