Likes: Good food but could be better. Food is served luke warm. Dislikes: Service is not that great - we made a reservation a week ahead but they placed us at a table next to the toilet, upstairs for a birthday celebration. I thought they could be nicer to place us at a table downstairs since we requested it at least a week ahead. Also, the prices a quite challenging too considering that the portion is very, very small.

I absolutely love the Fish Amritsari Tacos – seabass marinated in ginger, garlic, carom seeds and other spices and gram flour, lightly battered and then fried till crisp. A popular street food item in India, the fried fish is served on a tortilla, topped with tomato salsa and drizzled with a special sauce. Eat this immediately when served, before the tortilla gets soggy – the fried fish is insanely good!

Racheado Fish Fry - MYR 36+ (6% SST = MYR 38.16 nett). The word recheado means stuffed in Portuguese. Recheado masala is a red paste which is often used as stuffing in fishes like pomfret and mackerel. Here it is used to marinate and coat the 3 pieces of mackerel (the fish tastes like mackerel but I did not confirm it with the restaurant).

Briyani itself was sufficiently moist and the mutton came with some really delicious and thick gravy that I very much enjoyed. The amount of meat in the Briyani was quite a lot as well. The flavours were well balanced and neither one overpowered the other. Loved it for sure and my rating for this Lotus Leaf Mutton Briyani shall be 8/10

Our Lobster Biryani @ RM280 was served in a large steel pot, sealed with pastry dough which locks up the flavours while cooking. This dish was so massive the staff had to use a trolley to send the large steel pot over to your table. Taste wise we thought it was simply delicious and imparted a unique sweetness which can’t be replaced with Chicken, Mutton or Lamb. This hint of sweetness which came from the Lobster helped elevate the dish to a different level compared to other biryanis. The lobster by itself was fresh and succulent and had that delicious tender bite.

I liked the fact that the dish came with 4 options for vegetables as oppose to the usual 3. There was spinach, corn + carrot, beetroot and cucumber. The corn + carrot was a rare combination, I cant say I’ve come across it being served at restaurants. I really liked how they cooked it – spicy and packed with flavorful, thick tasty gravy. The Chicken Varuval was awesome but since I couldn’t personally pick out the pieces I wanted, let’s just say there were plenty of bones. Not a big issue though, since I was using my hands to eat, my fingers can work, work, work. The Chicken 65 was a good addition, it provided something crunchy and chewy to an otherwise wet, moist dish. Overall, I had a good time here and yup, I agree, food is good here.

Unfortunately, I found the whole experience rather mediocre. Worst still, I felt like I have wasted my calorie allowance by eating this BLR. Murgh Bombay Bohri Briyani, 50 ringgit. This was delicious yawwwwww. The rice was moist and soft + tender bits of chicken scattered all over and contrary to the usual, I did not even need to add gravy in. The moistness and softness + spices and flavor from the briyani rice was just right that there was no need to add on gravy in hopes of adding flavor. No need at all. Kayra Restaurant

46, Jalan Tun Mohd Fuad 1 Taman Tun Dr Ismail 60000 Kuala Lumpur Malaysia

Kayra derives its name from keram, which means coconut palm trees in Malayalam, the language indigenous to Kerala and the birth of its name. The inspiration behind Kayra started over 65 years ago with the opening of the first Kerala Restaurant in Johor Bahru in 1949. It was a meeting place for Keralites to connect with their roots, and savour authentic Kerala cuisine. Kayra pays homage to this heritage, and serves recipes handed down through the generations, renowned for its distinct use of coconut – whether grated, roasted, or as a cooking medium. The palate-pampering dishes, both vegetarian and non-vegetarian, are freshly prepared and served everyday. Each dish is lovingly crafted and celebrates the true flavours of Kerala. We hope you love it as much as we enjoy sharing it with you.

Hyderabad Nizam Biriyani (Chicken), 24.90 ringgit. I especially lurveee the biriyani. It is one of those dishes that had just the right amount of wetness, gooeyness and filled with flavor, to an extent that you can forego the gravies that came on the side because between the rice and the chicken – there was enough spices and flavors to go around. Know what I mean? That being said, the gravies were yummy too. The dhal was delicious and most importantly thick. I dislike watered down dhal – it is gross. Then, there was mooru/yogurt and pickled, sweetish vegetables. It was tasty enough that I ate the 3 sides on its own. I had the biriyani rice and the chicken by itself. The chicken was da bomb. They sure were generous with the meat here – 2 large pieces. Imagine those spice infused tender, meaty chicken + flavorful, moist biriyani rice – very nice. It was a satisfying hearty meal.

Fish Briyani, 19 ringgit. This was tastefull too. You would basically get similar ingredients that accompanied the chicken briyani except for the meat, of course. Here, you would get yourself a tender, flavorful fish. Yummy. The only downside to this dish was that compared to the chicken briyani, which came with plenty of gravy, which in turn made the whole dish moist, this dish came with a lack of gravy. This meant that the rice was not moist as briyani rice should be, the rice here was pretty dry. However, worry not. They were more than willing to to provide you with gravy/curry of your choice. With the gravy, this dish was pretty good.
