The Lengkuas Cafe Restaurant

Jalan Argyll 10050 George Town Pulau Pinang Malaysia

It’s the type of food that evokes pleasant memories from the good old days. That’s why here in The Lengkuas Cafe, our chosen comfort food are always a mere reminiscence of those dishes we grew up with here, in Penang.

The server introduced their Famous Laksa Cik Umi with aplomb so we decided to try it out. The serving was large and the soup was pretty thick (thicker than the usual Assam Laksa). But it had all the essential columns ticked- sour, savory, spicy and a hint of sweetness (from the Shrimp paste). The condiments were spot on either but if I had to comment, it would be the texture of the noodles... which I thought they could be a little springier. Equally delectable was the Nasi Kacang, a serving of oiled Rice with 2 types of curries. Amazing flavors but we were not over-whelmed by the dish.

Not to miss out Malaysian's all time favourite Nasi Lemak, which is served with a piece of fried chicken marinated with galangal and mixture of spices that yields a subtle aromatic taste, along with delicious sambal, anchovies and peanut. Another signature here would be their Famous Laksa Cik Umi, which is a blend of Chinese and Malay cooking with a balance of sweetness and spiciness.

A specialty not to be missed is Murtabak (flat bread). Made at the show kitchen at the entrance of the restaurant, the murtabak comes stuffed with a choice of minced chicken, beef, mutton or vegetable fillings. Served with a simple helping of pickled onions, the pan-fried murtabak is simply delectable when paired with a bit of curry chicken and nutty dalcha – a lentil curry infused with herbs and spices.

Nasi Kandar was yummy. I loved their Kuah Campur and Fried Fish. Fried Fish Egg was little too dry in my opinion

The Mermaid The Mermaid Cafe.Ikan Bakar Restaurant

A traditional Malay-style charcoal grilled fish. History has it that grilled fish is brought to Malacca by the Portuguese traders. Malaysians had since injected our own creativity into this classic dish.

The Mermaid's Signature Stingray has bold flavors and might be a little overly bold on its own but perfectly well over a spoon of Rice. The edges were carefully grilled to a crisp while the inner flesh remains its moist. Any order with the Signature Stingray will be served with a portion of the quintessential refreshing Chili dip. It was good but we were not blown away. For a Western-twist, we had Grouper Steak with Home-made Pesto Sauce and it was served with Mashed Potato and Corn Niblets. The thickly cut Fish possessed the most satisfying meaty-bite but the Pesto Sauce was a little too heavy on the seasoning... it would be better if they could reduce the salinity. If you are neither a fan of the old-school Sambal sauce nor the vegetal Pesto, you may opt for Garlic Butter... which will be served with Wedges and Salad.

Over here, a classic piece of Apom Balik with peanut solely cost RM 1 only. While taste is a very objective flavour, we enjoyed the generous quantity of banana slices in our Apom Balik Pisang, though we'd hoped for an additional dash of peanuts.
