Penang is famous for its Peranakan culture, particularly the well-known Baba Nyonya community. Established in 1933 as a kuih-specializing factory, Moh Teng Pheow Nyonya Koay expanded to include a storefront in 2016, showcasing a remarkable commitment to Nyonya kueh.
Moh Teng Pheow Nyonya Kuih has earned the prestigious Bib Gourmand status in the 2023 Michelin Guide KL and Penang list.
Moh Teng Pheow Nonya Koay was where we headed for our fix of Nonya Kuehs. Having visited Jason’s Nonya House and still craving for Nonya fare, we found Moh Teng Pheow Nonya Koay a popular venue for koahs such as Kueh Lapis, Kueh Talam and Kueh Bengka.
We didn’t dislike any of the dishes, but we weren’t excited by any of them either. It’s good home-style cooking, but it’s not going to blow your socks off. Service was efficient and the food came fast.
Verdict: With so many good reviews I’ve read online (some even said this is the best choice when comes to Nyonya dining in Melaka), my dining experience certainly wouldn’t make it the best Nyonya restaurant in Melaka. Perhaps I’ve order the wrong dishes. Food was just decent but did not mind-blowing and I’ve had a better Nyonya meal elsewhere. (Read THIS)
This little Nyonya restaurant is located at Melakaraya area. We went pretty late, about 2pm-ish and yet the queue is still long! Nevertheless, the wait was not that long. We observed that the dishes come within 10 minutes after sitting down, so most of the dishes may have already been prepared way earlier.
What do We Like about Choon Prawn Mee House? -The prawn mee broth which was rich, and full of prawns’ flavour
The traditional Prawn Mee was very nice, I think prawn-based soup was a little bit on the sweet side and not as spicy as I'd imagine it to be, which fits my taste buds. Nice!
Its a nice place and once again Thank You the owner for being so nice allowing us to chip in after his operating hours. I really favor nyonya food therefore my choice of selection is quite particular so may not be the best Nyonya food that I have tried but definitely is one of the famous in Malacca that you can tried some local taste with reasonable price. Rating: 6.8 /10
Finally here comes our long-awaited main dish, The Sambal Udang Petai RM19.00 featuring stir-fry prawn and bitter bean in hot sauce. The overall dish tastes rather spicy, has an irresistible sweet and sour flavor, a perfect dish that will make you enjoy another bowl of rice in no time! 😉

During beratur tu, korang dah boleh usha menu apa nak makan. Bayar lepas order kat depan tu jugak. Servis laju. Jangan risau eh? Kebetulan perut memang dok lapar ni. Here is my verdict, nasi ayam kepal ni rasanya biasa. By the way, ayam diperap lembut, and sup fish ball tu simple.
Overall semua not bad.Sedap pun sedap.Cuma umi tak rasa dia punya sup tu jelah.Kang order bebanyak tak habis pulak.
Kedai makannya senang nak cari, guna Waze aje.
We had tried most of those Nyonya Kuih offered in Baba Charlie and honestly, it never fails to continuously astound in every aspect, just truly a pleasure while enjoying each one of them especially for ondeh-ondeh, Rempah Udang, Kuih Abu Sagu, and Pulut Seri Kaya, arghh still keep craving for more up till date.
Baba Charlie is an icon of Melaka that has been churning out delicious Peranakan / Nyonya kuihs since 1988. Although located further from the main city, it ...
We got a packet of the onde-onde (RM5.30 for 10 pieces)- this was our favourite of the lot as the balls were soft and bursting with gula melaka
Like I mentioned, this is a short food sharing and food review. I was there for a quick lunch and only ordered two versions of their nasi lemak. They also offer nasi lemak with butter chicken and maybe you might want to order that too. Mamalee Malaysian Cuisine famous nasi lemak definitely lives up to their reputation and it is a good alternative to the famous Village Park nasi lemak which is located on the same road and down the road. This is not a sponsored review.
Mamalee, the delicious and creative addition to our usual nasi lemak, the price was very reasonable with very big piece of L-shape chicken
Mamalee’s Salted Egg Fried Chicken Nasi Lemak is definitely worth checking out if you’re a big fan of salted egg! Located in Damansara Uptown, Mamalee is a Penang style Nyonya restaurant for casual dining.
Mango Lassi goes perfectly well with their Banana Leaf Rice Set.
The hotel is also serving Tuan Yuan Reunion Buffet Dinner (团圆年夜饭) on Chinese New Year's Eve (24 January 2020).
Ixora Hotel never fail to impress their guest with their food from their buffet menu every time when ever there is a holiday season or celebration in Malaysia.
I've been to Donald & Lily countless time, and they've never failed to disappoint me so far :) But again, taste is subjective. Try at your own risk!
Next up, we order a signature Peranakan dish called Nasi Ayam Pongtay RM11.00 featuring blue rice (pea flower) serves with mixed vegetables and a bowl of braised chicken. The blue rice is warm and fragrant, mixed vegetables deems to be quite salty where we only manage to taste the “Kicap” (soy sauce) flavor, while Ayam Pongtay for us is a pure disaster, although chicken is braised to perfection yet the taste is super-duper salty, tongue feels numb right after sipping onto the Pongtay Kuah (highly suspects is an overnights cooking result), can’t even proceed after the first scoop so we decide to raise white flag and leave it there as per it is, seriously feel like “Ketuk” the chef with a ladle and ask them dah bangun ke belum?! 😉
#melakafood #melakafood2020 #ilovemelakaDonald and Lily is a must have in every tourist to eat list. Famous for their Nyonya Laksa, Mee Siam, Taukua Rojak an...
The coverage of their menu as well as the batik table cloth still feel familiar to me from the last visit. Groups of customers came strolling into the Restaurant after we settled down.
A humble-looking eatery. It is located among shop houses right by the main road. The chef here is super awesome. Dishes here are incredibly delicious.
Squids Fried with Stink Beans & Sambal - known as petai, the stink beans are an acquired taste which intensifies as you chew them further! Personally, i quite enjoyed the petai although the bigger highlight was the nicely cooked squid that's fried with the aromatic sambal chilli!
Another delicious food in the menu that you “must try” in East & West Rendezvous are none other than their in-house Durian Mixed Cendol RM 5.50 served with shaved ice, gula Melaka syrup, durian, and red beans. We gotta admit, this cendol gives us a real good vibe right on our first try, it has a mouth-watering intense fragrant durian kick (similar like dodol durian) which goes superbly well with the local gula Melaka – sweet, mildly bitter and chilling throughout the whole dessert session, truly worth every single penny spent! 😉
-- East & West Rendezvous Cafe has the best nyonya chang in town . We ordered one nyonya chang to testing and bought more than ten pieces after that . The best nyonya chang that I’ve eaten . The glutinous rice is cooked to perfection and the spices is rich with flavorful .
Nonya Dumplings, another must try in Melaka. We were told East & West Rendezvous, just down the street from Chung Wah, was the place to go. They are all homemade, right in the shop. The blue c…
Restaurant Nyonya Treats Cuisine is a no pork no lard place so it's suitable for our Muslim pals. The taste as overall was average to us and in fact, was on the saltier side. It will be more interesting to taste more Nyonya cuisines in Johor so as to compare more.
Thick slab of otah paste encasing mackerel flakes. I am not joking when I say this beats Muar Otak flat.
Oh yes.. cannot leave Nyonya Treats without Durian Cendol! Yummssssss...
Bulldog’s food then doesn’t quite live up to the hype (except their cendol). I’m perhaps spoiled in that my wife and in-laws cook nyonya food very well, including doing vegetarian versions for me, so you might find it more exciting a culinary experience.
Reasons to visit Bulldog Malacca: cool, clean and contemporary setting; an excellent introduction to Nyonya cuisine; must must must order the Lamb Shank Keluak and Cendol.
Just 5 minutes from Ramada Plaza along the busy Jalan Bendhara, the name of this café is intriguing. Much as I anticipate, I did not see any canine of such breed around. Though disappointed, we w…
Nancy’s Kitchen is not bad an option if you are looking for a Peranakan restaurant in Melaka.
Overall, Nancy's Kitchen has a home style Peranakan Food with reasonable pricing.
Overall, it is still a recommended restaurant whenever you have the Peranakan food crave in you. Just stick with their signature food and you will avoid any disappointment. Total Damage: RM122.00 Ambiance: 3/5 Service 3/5 Food Serving Speed: Moderate Recommended?: Yes
I think the food here is alright, albeit priced slightly higher. Pork belly is not exactly great, slightly salty, but decent. My mom claims the assam fish got not enough kick and different from..
♥Verdict: We really like the Assam Pedas and willing to give this place a second chance to try out more of their dishes such as the roasted duck, purple porridge and braised pork belly which are quite attractive to me.
Good quality food, and tasty.
This is yet the best White Curry Noodle I have had in Penang, noodle was perfectly cooked with tasty soup "white color" (optional addition of extra chili), the bowl comes with Sotong slices, Fresh cockels as well as QQ Duck blood (instead of Pork blood). Another dish, the 白斩鸡 Deboned Boiled Chicken with Soy Sauce is definitely a must try, one of the best 滑鸡 I have ever tried.
Hola! The transformation is done and there comes a reddish colour of curry mee. It emits a strong essence of curry taste and a pleasant aroma, with the spiciness level can be adjusted depending on the amount of chilli paste you have added. Beware though as too much of the chilli paste may cause choking as it is real spciy! That is why they named it Hot Bowl!
♥Verdict: It’s definitely a lovely evening with great food which scored up to my expectation, impeccable service and enjoyable ambiance. Java Tree might not a regular casual eating place but it is certainly one of the places you should consider when comes to special occasions.

East meets West with culinary aplomb at the new Java Tree restaurant, Eastern & Oriental (E&O) Hotel Penang, making it a notable outpost to dine in.
business is usual for most and parking has become somewhat worst at Main Place area.
Lots of people come here for the laksa or cendol.
Cham was very "Gao", but despite requesting for less sweet; it was still delivered as it is which is very sweet.
Baba Low’s original restaurant is in Tengkera, Melaka and this is the second branch they have in KL. The other branch is actually nearby at Lorong Kurau. What we like about this place is the fast service, affordable prices and simple but delicious Nyonya food.
This popiah wrapper (skin) is very similar to a pancake or crepe because it is doughy, soft and much thicker than the usual thin popiah skin. My friend cannot get used to it and so she removed the skin from 3 segments and left them uneaten. I finished my popiah because I like to eat doughy pancakes. The jicama is cooked with fermented soybeans paste (taucu) as I found some fermented soybeans in the roll. I am ok with this popiah but will not order it again because I don't like the jicama that is too soggy.
My half eaten cendol with my newly served Nyonya Curry Laksa at MYR 8.50 nett. We requested for Mee Hoon (Rice vermicelli) only and I like that the Mee Hoon is very, very soft so that it soaks all the creaminess of the curry broth.
