Warm homely restaurant, very nyonya feel. Variety of nyonya dish, even dessert. Like the cendol with gula melaka, and sago with gula melaka. Dish portion kinda small. Assam fish highly recommend.

With decent pricing and good portions, Just Nyonya proves to be a solid place for Nyonya food. Flavours are solid for most dishes with top favorites of mine that includes Perut Ikan, Chicken Kapitan, Sweet Potato Leaf Masak Lemak Keledek, Asam Prawns and more. There are also set lunch with very decent pricing and I spied Nyonya Laksa on the menu too. I will definitely be back to try other dishes on their menu!

We choose our main delicious meal from “The Awesome All Day Set” section, Signature Nasi Kerabu RM26.90 – serves with Nasi Kerabu, Kerisik, Fish Cracker, Acar, Veggies, Salted Egg, Samosa, Beef Rendang, Satay, Rempah Chicken and a FREE bowl of homemade sago with Gula Melaka syrup. Frankly speaking, this is more “grand” than what we encountered at Madam Kwan (Nasi Lemak), the Nasi Kerabu tastes heavenly good especially while mixing with their homemade sambal sauce, we keep busy-busy stacking meat from the west to meet with the rice on the east vice versa throughout the meal! 😉

Nasi Kunyit Served with Curry Chicken (RM 19.50) Not just that, we tried their Nasi Kunyit which is served together with the Curry Chicken. One can taste the fragrant taste of the nasi kunyit. Once, you drenched the creamy coconut-based curry into the rice, they are really good and addictive.

Sotong with Kangkong is a popular street food you can find in town. The dish is simple and easy to make with blanched brown cuttlefish and kangkung but the secret lies in the sauce.

The Nasi Kerabu Baba Fried Chicken (RM17.00), came with a serving of blue rice topped with sweet and spicy coconut sauce, half a hard-boiled salted egg, acar and salad, grated coconut, fish keropok, and fried chicken. The chicken was succulent on the inside, cripsy outside, and the acar added a sour twang to the overall sweet dish.

Loke Thye Kee Restaurant 乐台居 Restaurant

2, Jalan Burma, George Town, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia

Loke Thye Kee serves a selection of Penang heritage food and western cuisine, right in the heart of Georgetown, Penang.

  • 2017-03-29 00:00:00+00:00
With near to 10 years of experience in the food & beverage industry, BRFNC Food Services (same management as Blue Reef Fish N Chips) takes over the management of Loke Thye Kee, an iconic heritage building that sits right smack in central Georgetown. The 88 year old building stays as it is, the only change made was the newly rolled out menu. It is a space dedicated to marry history with good food. Loke Thye Kee was once famed as one of the first established Hainanese restaurants in Georgetown in the olden days; with that in mind, the new management decided to preserve the Hainanese element as well as introducing some Nyonya dishes to the menu. The old school atmosphere is a reminiscent of the past- the interior decoration suggests evocative memories on the Hainanese Kopitiam. The restaurant opens as early as 8:30 am and expect to see an intimate variety of Hainanese Coffee with Toast for breakfast; full-fledged Hainanese-Nyonya menu will be served starting from noon. If you are on the lookout for Pork-Free caterer, Loke Thye Kee provides catering services as well.

Loke Thye Kee building is the place you find yourself passing by every time you drive down Burma Road from Penang Road. A distinctive landmark, this building with a cafe, restaurant and bar has ceased operations for a few months. It has since re-opened under new management – by the people that runs Blue Reef Fish & Chips.

If you have passed by Lebuh McNair recently, chances are high that you have seen this stretch of heritage houses with odd embellishment vying for attention. It does not suggest a thing and some actually though it was a museum-to-be but in actual fact, it comprises of restaurants jointly named as "McNair Restaurants", serving both Peranakan Nyonya cuisine and Western cuisine. Not much signage out the front and the exaggerated decoration outside means nothing but the interior suggests otherwise. Step in the restaurant and you will see traces of the "Nyonya-Peranakan" traits- from the usual Peranakan antique tiles to seemingly priceless heirloom displayed on the wall. Ironically, the menu is not limited to Peranakan cuisine... there are some Western options for those with Western palate either. Prices are reasonable and it isn't a stretch to go for Seafood dishes like Assam Pedas Fish or Assam Prawns. It is also note-worthy that McNair Restaurants are fully air-conditioned and serve family-style servings.

Their aim to make authentic Peranakan kueh and desserts available to the public is certainly commendable In addition to education, locals and foreigners can enjoy dainty pieces of local delicacies, savouries and beverages in an air-conditioned outlet. While the decor and ambience could do with more work, it is still a decent place for some quiet time. No WIFI is available at the moment.

Oooooman, if you love your laksa thick and milky with santan and packed with flavors – The Nyonya Laksa is for you. It is indulgingly fattening, I know but that is why it comes in a bowl smaller than the usual sizes, plus the fact that it sure is filling. I opted for the kuey teow + mee hoon noodle combination, which worked well with this dish. I could not stop slurping it all up.
