For sharing, the Pla Kapong Sam Road is a huge dish with deep fried Seabass served with sweet and spicy sauce... as well as heaps of crunchy vegetables like Cucumber, Onions and Chilies. It does not sound very Thai but the flavors were well-balanced and perfectly spooned over rice.

The Pad Thai Seafood (RM 8.90) was impressive. It shares almost 70% similarities with the Pad Thai we had in Bangkok and the heat component was no joke. It put our mouth on fire and we had to take small pauses in between to give some resting period for our tongue.

Chicken Maklouba (RM 25) here is delicious. The rice is fluffy and light, rendering a very delicious taste. It comes with a big portion of chicken and some eggplants. Though the chicken is flavourful, we felt it was a tad too try for our liking. It comes with a bowl of chili sauce but we feel the sauce somehow mask the natural fragrance of the dish. It has been some time since we have a plate of delicious Middle East rice.

For a no-frills Thai Mookata experience, look no further than this curious space at Automall, Karpal Singh Drive. Affordably priced at Rm 19.90 for a basic set (serves 2), budget watchers can now enjoy delicious Thai Steamboat at unbeatable price, well-complemented with sea breeze. The simple set includes some basic meat balls, greens and meat but those with a deeper pocket can always top up extra few dollars for the additional spread. Bangkok Garden BBQ is not air-conditioned and instead, it relies on the sea breeze so the best time to visit would probably in the evening. The serving portion is not that great but it would be perfectly fine to be served as supper in lieu of a proper meal. Bangkok Garden BBQ can be found right next to Sae Ma Eul Korean BBQ Restaurant.

We were amazed by the quality of the 1/2 Roasted Moroccan Chicken... grilled to perfection and the skin was brushed with Balsamic reduction, slightly sweet but with a bitter end (due to the singed skin). The meat was fork-tender and perfectly good on its own but even better to enjoy with Sea Salt or a tangy Thai Green Chili dip.

With near to 10 years of experience in the food & beverage industry, BRFNC Food Services (same management as Blue Reef Fish N Chips) takes over the management of Loke Thye Kee, an iconic heritage building that sits right smack in central Georgetown. The 88 year old building stays as it is, the only change made was the newly rolled out menu. It is a space dedicated to marry history with good food. Loke Thye Kee was once famed as one of the first established Hainanese restaurants in Georgetown in the olden days; with that in mind, the new management decided to preserve the Hainanese element as well as introducing some Nyonya dishes to the menu. The old school atmosphere is a reminiscent of the past- the interior decoration suggests evocative memories on the Hainanese Kopitiam. The restaurant opens as early as 8:30 am and expect to see an intimate variety of Hainanese Coffee with Toast for breakfast; full-fledged Hainanese-Nyonya menu will be served starting from noon. Harlequin Combo and Crab Combo are both the most-ordered meals here. The former one comes with a concoction of Clams, Mussels, Yabbies, Prawns, Sausages and Corns while the latter choice has Crabs, Sausages and Corns. Both were dressed in a spicy, sweet-savory sauce. Both possessed strong smokiness; the flavor-combo was attractive at first but we thought it was too monotonous towards the end. The boldly seasoned Seafood was too hefty on the palate. Seafood was fresh and the fact that Mud Crabs with Roe were served, we thought the prices were well-justified. Good for novelty experience but not the type of food that I would want to eat on a regular basis.

Yuan Wei took social media by storm earlier ago when it was first introduced and made famous by Penang social media players. Many were impressed (visually) by the hearty, home-cooked Cantonese spread but a meal does not come cheap here at Yuan Wei. A basic bowl of Fish Meat Bee Hoon would cost up slightly more than Rm 10 but the portion commensurate with the price tag and quality. Notable highlights include their Fish Meat Bee Hoon with Milky Soup, Tom Yum Noodles, Cantonese Porridge, Stir-Fry dishes and Deep Fried Crispy Fish. Regardless of your age, the big menu would be able to offer something for you; the fully air-conditioned Chinese restaurant is a place most suitable for a casual family meal.

The F&B scene in Penang does not sound like it will be slowing down for the new year of 2017, there are quite a number of new restaurants to put on radar. Foodies may have noticed this eye-catchy building at the corner of Hutton Lane, right next to New World Park. The exterior of the restaurant is painted in orange color, with a few bright spotlights in action. The name "Green Bell" surely does not ring a bell... at least not for us. Green Bell has quite an extensive menu, offering a vast selection of Western-Fusion dishes, though most of them are priced reasonably, the dishes lacked the excitement when it comes to quality... as though it was just an ordinary restaurant in the neighborhood. Food-aside, the service on our visit was lackluster; for a few simple orders, it took them more than one hour to serve and the restaurant was not even half-full.

On mains, we seemed to enjoy the signature Pork Collar more than Roast Chicken... the former dish tasted a little Char Siew, except that it was the melt-in-the-mouth tender. The meat was sous-vided before grilling, so you can sort of relate that soft-tender texture.

It's a must to try their signature Thai Boat Noodles... WhatSaeb's rendition comes with either Dry or Soup version.... served with a Chicken Drumstick, Meatballs and Herbs. The serving portion was pretty small and was no where near to a filling meal. The texture of the Noodles was alright but it was a little over-seasoned in our opinion. We needed to add a dash of Chili sauce to neutralizes the salinity.

With a name like Viva La Pasta, one would expect to see a heavy Italian fare in this newly opened restaurant. It is housed within the new budget hotel- iStay Hotel in the heart of Georgetown. Step in the cafe and you will be pleasantly amazed by how cozy the place is. While every effort was made to ensure the place lives up to the classy Italian theme but we did not think the Italian element was strong enough. In fact, we spotted a wallpaper with Chinese characters. On the menu, it offers quite a wide variety of Italian fare, ranging from Antipasto, Pizza, Pasta, Grills and even classic Italian desserts. Very wallet-friendly price points but as far as authenticity is concerned, we thought the flavors have been localized to suit the local audience.

The Mermaid's Signature Stingray has bold flavors and might be a little overly bold on its own but perfectly well over a spoon of Rice. The edges were carefully grilled to a crisp while the inner flesh remains its moist. Any order with the Signature Stingray will be served with a portion of the quintessential refreshing Chili dip. It was good but we were not blown away. For a Western-twist, we had Grouper Steak with Home-made Pesto Sauce and it was served with Mashed Potato and Corn Niblets. The thickly cut Fish possessed the most satisfying meaty-bite but the Pesto Sauce was a little too heavy on the seasoning... it would be better if they could reduce the salinity. If you are neither a fan of the old-school Sambal sauce nor the vegetal Pesto, you may opt for Garlic Butter... which will be served with Wedges and Salad.

The Line's Seafood Aglio Olio was a little different compared to others... particularly the introduction of Salmon into the dish. While we enjoyed the al-dente texture of the Pasta, we found the dish a little fishy (stench) probably due to Salmon. It was bearable but that somehow discounted some marks. For light eaters, the Portobello & Sausage works. The Chicken Sausage was delicious.... well-seasoned with an addictive bouncy texture while the Sunny Side Up was well-cooked with runny Egg Yolk in the middle. Not to be missed is the Croissant.... extremely flaky and even better to go with the premium Butter.

If spending an evening on bar hopping is one of your favorite activities to do on the weekends, this newly operated, unassuming Japanese Izakaya-inspired BBQ Grill House should take a spot on your to visit list. There are plenty of delights churned out from the grills, there are also some local dishes... the fare is mostly Asian. The alcohol menu is not extensive but a few selections of Beers and canned drinks. The setting is down to earth and laid back- with wooden pallets as tables while the irregular bricks as background, adorned by Chinese lanterns hanging across the ceiling. It does not feel like a very cozy bar but it can be a decent space to have a casual dinner/ supper.

Silver Spoon knows their Pesto Sauce well, the flavors were amazing; the herbaceous element was there, complemented with rich, cream-based sauce. A pity that the Spaghetti was over-cooked though we enjoyed the sauce a lot. It's hard to find Rib Eye Steak that costs below Rm 50 in Penang but as expected, the cut was a lackluster. Though the Red Wine sauce was beautifully done, the texture of the meat was somewhat disappointing. The meat was rough and the bite was less-satisfying. The Rib Eye Steak was served with a side of Potato Au Gratin and some greens. All in all, we have no complaints given the promotional rates but for usual rates, we thought they could do better.

The signature Claypot Crab Rice was the highlight of the day... with alluring smoky aroma; it may seem huge in serving portion but it was the crabs that made up the space. It's hard to miss Ji Bao Wang (鸡煲王), not only does the strategic location (at the corner of Larut Road to Hutton Lane and Burmah Road, next to KFC Larut Road or opposite to Hotel Royal Penang) gives the restaurant an edge in exposure, the playful-catchy banner that says "我要叫鸡" has caught a lot of attention as well (shall not be translated into English). As the tagline may suggest, the place specializes in serving various types of Chicken Hot Pot but the signature dish here is the Sze Chuan-influenced Chicken Hot Pot. The dining concept is somewhat interesting- diners will be served a ready-to-eat Chicken Hot Pot, hot soup will then be added when you are done. It then becomes Steamboat and diners may now adjourn to the display fridges to pick up the preferred ingredients to be added to the soup (prices vary according to the colors of the plates). The interior decor is modern and chic but with a touch of China Chinese flair. Price points are high but the quality is less-satisfying, the authenticity is missing (lackluster service and below-par quality, pretty disappointing). Ironically, we then found out that this place is a sister restaurant to Chong Qing Steamboat (at Kelawei Road).

The Unagi Tama Don was probably the only dish we could agree upon but the classic combo of Unagi with Japanese-styled Egg rice bowl was pretty much standard-average... well, at least we managed to get what we were paying for.
