Michizane was especially fond of ume (Asian plum) trees, and there are as many as 6000 of them on the grounds of Dazaifu Tenman-gū. One particular tree, the Tobiume “flying plum tree”, stands to the right of the honden main shrine hall – legend has it that Michizane yearned so much for this tree that it uprooted itself from Kyoto and flew to Dazaifu Tenman-gū. When we visited the ume trees were starting to come into full bloom, their white and pink flowers signalling the welcome arrival of spring.

Tofukuji Temple 東福寺 Attraction

Japan, 〒605-0981 Kyōto-fu, Kyōto-shi, Higashiyama-ku, Honmachi 京都市東山区本町15−778

This temple is the head temple of the Tofukuji School of the Rinzai sect of Zen Buddhism. It was built in 1236 on the instructions of Kujo Michiie, the great statesman of the Kamakura period, who desired to build in Kyoto a temple complexes in Nara. Even its name, Tofukuji, is a combination of one chalacter from the names of each of these Nara temples.

Tofukuji temple is one of the best places to visit for viewing red and yellow colored autumn leaves in Kyoto. You can overlook about 2000 Japanese maple trees from three bridges. They are overwhelming.

Besides the autumn season, I believe the summer season is also a great time to visit Komyozenji Temple, where you get to enjoy a perfect summer green scenery. Anyway, these are the photos that we took during the spring season; the color is not as vibrant as the autumn season, but this Karesansui garden still offers a calm and peaceful atmosphere.
