Grilled Chicken with Special Sambal is one of our favourite dish in the Chef's Hidang Set. The perfect grilling rendered a soft and tender texture to the chicken meat, then topped with special soy glazed chili sauce that gives a tad of sweetness along with the slight hot sensation, tickling the taste buds for a true enjoyment.

Penang is indeed my hometown. Little did I know that there is actually a hidden gem inside Fort Cornwallis, a fort that being build during Captain Francis Light era. It is not only a heritage fort but also house a restaurant, Kota Dine & Coffee – when Francis meets rempah. This is what happen when Western meet East. A casual dining that focus on modern Nyonya Cuisine with a slight twist.

We thought the patty saltiness level could be tuned down for a more enjoyable eating experience, as every components of the burger worked decently except for the over seasoned patty.

Spaghetti noodles were cooked to al-dente and was seasoned nicely with a hint of spiciness, then garnished with olives. We were surprised to see generous quantity of big chicken cutlets were served. It was great but the entire presentation or experience would have been better if the chickens were cut into smaller slices. Overall it was a great spaghetti.

Steak Frites' meat comes in 2 servings- 150 grams or 200 grams... hefty piece of meat grilled over high temperature for a beautifully charred surface and tender yet flavorsome flesh, perfectly rested so that barely any meat juice escape. It is then served with a home-made creamy sauce and crispy Fries. The fats were beautifully rendered... leaving a layer of smoky, addictive char yet, not overcooking the meat. Effort was unnecessary to slit through the meat, every mouthful of the meat was full of satisfaction. Definitely the type of meat that I would miss in no time.

The F&B scene in Penang does not sound like it will be slowing down for the new year of 2017, there are quite a number of new restaurants to put on radar. Foodies may have noticed this eye-catchy building at the corner of Hutton Lane, right next to New World Park. The exterior of the restaurant is painted in orange color, with a few bright spotlights in action. The name "Green Bell" surely does not ring a bell... at least not for us. Green Bell has quite an extensive menu, offering a vast selection of Western-Fusion dishes, though most of them are priced reasonably, the dishes lacked the excitement when it comes to quality... as though it was just an ordinary restaurant in the neighborhood. Food-aside, the service on our visit was lackluster; for a few simple orders, it took them more than one hour to serve and the restaurant was not even half-full.

The traditional Fuzhou red wine chicken 福州特制红糟鸡 with mee sua (white wheat noodles) is a well-loved option. The main ingredient of the dish is red rice wine. Traditional-classic Foo Chow delights are not common in Penang's food scene, at least not ubiquitously found in any hawker centers but one particular coffee shop in town has been dishing out Foo Chow delicacies for years. Right smack in town, Cowboy Street Cafe is a stone's throw distance away from the famous mural art paint at Armenian Street. Foo Chow classics basically make up the menu, along with some localized Western dishes and nibbles but the price points are slightly above average (imagine Koay Teow Th'ng with Foo Chow Fish Balls at Rm 10). Hefty price tags but if you in dire need to satiate your craving for Foo Chow dishes, this is the place you should go.

Gins has been the heart of the bistro, with its creation of house cocktails, classic and contemporary Gin & Tonic. Gin & Tonic has always taken centre stage at the bistro with its paring of local inspired garnish & variety of premium tonic water. We pair our gin and tonic carefully, few factors to consider, the aromatic of the gin, bitterness and dryness of the tonic, the chill from the ice, acidity and additional flavours from the garnish, and last but not lease the ‘hit’ from the alcohol must never be neglected. Let the pursuit in creating the best Gin and Tonic continues!

Indian-inspired Sweet & Sour Chicken is one of the latest creations... basically grilled Chicken Thigh served atop of Japanese Rice and Sweet-Sour sauce. The combination of Japanese Rice and well-grilled Chicken Thigh speaks for itself. The Chicken was good on its own... perfectly tender and juicy; the Japanese Rice was well-executed either. We did not however, enjoy the Sweet-Sour sauce, we thought it was way too sweet to our liking. The 'Sour' factor somehow went missing and it was saccharine sweet to dip the Chicken into the sauce.

The dish with the most returning customers and one of the best sellers of Hygge would be the Hygge Signature Laksa. Unlike any ordinary Curry Laksa in Malaysia, the broth is cooked using loads of Prawns and Flower Crabs... simmered for hours to fully accentuate the flavors of the sea. The seafood flavor is so rich and it almost feels like eating a seafood broth soup instead of a Laksa. The dish is good on its own but even better with a dash of Lemon juice and a spoonful of their home-made Chilies. The addition of acidity increases the depth while the Chilies introduces a peculiar smokiness which makes it instantly becomes multi-dimensional. The price is a little steep but definitely worth the experience.

Tucked away from the bustling Penang Road and Burmah Road, Areca Hotel opened its doors to the public in late 2016. It was previously a row of old, heritage houses right smack in the heart of Georgetown but has since refurbished and turned into this beautiful, colonial-styled building. But incredible to think many are not aware on its existence, probably the one-way street of Jalan Khoo Sian Ewe is an unmarked and unexpected location to most Penangites. Snugged at one corner of Areca Hotel is its in-house cafe- Areca Cafe (not obvious from outside and could easily walk past without noticing it), a quaint dining space with simple but elegant setting. Apart from serving breakfast to its hotel guests, it offers a promising Western-Fusion menu to the public as well. Located in the heart of George Town, Penang. Serving Alternative Cuisine Chef Wei draws inspiration from the vibrant backdrop of the island he resides in, from it’s rich heritage and culture to the interesting produces that are found in and around this area, working with the seasons, a new course of meal is served every month. Pulling apart, reconstituting, reinterpreting, reinventing and innovating, A Maze’s ambitions are to break expectations, challenge conventions and leave you lost in wonderment on a culinary experience. There are no menus and no ordering here, we ask that you bring an open mind and an appetite, and allow Chef Wei to bring you on a journey a spoonful at a time.

Modernist cuisine or Molecular Gastronomy might not be new to the world but it's definitely something to range over, particularly for Penangites. Innovation is a critical element when it comes to a modernist kitchen- not only that the Chef must change the customary way one would prepare and present the dish but the Chef must bring a change to how diners experience the food either. Adventurous eaters can make their way to the small alley at Nagore Square (where all the bars and small little shops located); A.Maze occupies a strategic corner right next to the vacant land; from outside, the restaurant suggests a nary of information on what it is about to serve, inside... there are only 8 seats arranged snugly facing a small kitchen manned by the Chef-Owner Chef Wei. The very young and talented Chef honed his culinary skills from overseas and had had working experience in Michelin-starred restaurants. A.Maze serves "Omakase" which literally means "leave it to the Chef", the menu is not informed to diners and it relies entirely on "trust" but Chef Wei is not a one-trick pony- diners' sense of taste is not the only thing that changes here... the "Omakse" menu switches once a month and it depends on the seasonal offering. Thanks to Chef Wei, we had the opportunity to join him in his extraordinary gastronomical journey.

Coffee 1911 Restaurant

191, Jalan Magazine 10300 George Town Pulau Pinang Malaysia

Nanyang literally "Southern Ocean", otherwise known as the 'South Sea' or Southeast Asia. The term came into common usage in self-reference to the large ethnic Chinese migrant population in Southeast Asia. The last imperial dynasty of China ruling from 1644 to 1911. leading to an expansion of the Chinese communities in the Nanyang. As a result of historical migrations, colonisation by foreign powers, and its geographical position within its wider home region, Nanyang's culinary style in the present day is primarily a melange of traditions from its Malay, Chinese, Indian, Indonesian and ethnic Bornean citizens, with heavy to light influences from Thai, Portuguese, Dutch, and British cuisines, to name a few. This resulted in a symphony of flavours, making Nanyang cuisine highly complex and diverse. A common sight in Nanyang, menus often feature offerings like nasi lemak, boiled eggs, roti bakar, noodle dishes, bread and kuih, Fish and Chip, Chicken Chop and chicken rice. Also because of their proximity, historic migrations and close ethnic and cultural kinship. A kopitiam or kopi tiam is a traditional coffee shop patronised for meals and beverages, predominantly operated by Chinese proprietors and especially members of the Hainanese community. The owner sometimes offer more specialised dishes beyond standard Chinese kopitiam fare. Typical beverages include malted chocolate drink considered iconic to Malaysians of all ages, as well as coffee and tea. Diners would use slang terms specific to kopitiam culture to order and cust

The newly opened Sous Vide Urban Cafe at New World Park is probably one of the cafes with most shareholders, it uses the concept crowdfunding and provides a community space for its guests/ members to mingle/ dine-in. There are small function rooms available to host meetings or gatherings either. The name- Sous Vide sure rings a bell, while most items on the menu are Sous Vide related; not all dishes are cooked using that method. Probably in soft-launch period, the menu is fairly small and there are plenty of rooms for improvements as far as food quality is concerned.
