Next, we have the Famosa Signature Steam Chicken (half portion) RM22.00 – Hainanese style steam chicken lightly drizzled with soy sauce, parsley and cucumber. The steam chicken is a huge success throughout this meal, succulent tender and juicy at each bite, as expected when they only use chicken meat from Bukit Mertajam, which is well-known for its free-range chicken! 😉

You’re probably familiar with chicken rice, a local specialty in Malaysia and Singapore, in which boiled or roasted chicken is served with chicken-infused rice, typically with chili sauce on the side. You might not be familiar with chicken rice balls, however (I certainly wasn’t until I came to Mela…

Service was quick and within 10 minutes, we were served. Our preference is chicken breast, hence the server suggested that we order 1/4 portion of steamed (RM10) and 1/4 portion of roasted (RM10), which would guarantee us getting the part that we want (and we get to try both types of meat). The chicken, sourced from Bukit Mertajam, was smooth and tender, and I particularly liked the steamed version. The portion is also generous.

Honestly, this isn't the best chicken rice ball in town. I wouldn't recommend this to you if you're looking for some good chicken rice ball in Melaka. Other chicken rice ball restaurants are always packed, so if you do not wish to wait in a long queue under the sun, Famosa Chicken Rice Ball may be a better choice for you, since they have fewer people and they have many branches in Melaka.

Sadly, the appearance can only help so much when it comes to food. Taste wise, most pieces were too dry compared to reputable Hainanese chicken rice stalls in Singapore. What's worse was the high salt level of the sauce soaking the poor chicken!

Overall, the only highlight is the rice ball, which is the specialty. It's not wonderfully nice to eat, but something special. All other dishes are normal and not that great. No reason to eat Chicken Rice Ball other than having something special and unique while in Melaka. I personally don't fancy the food but I will still come back whenever I'm in Melaka, just another way to remind myself that I'm in Melaka and what's the reason that you don't see this dish in other part of Malaysia, probably because no one will bother to eat? I don't know, just a question to ponder with. However, if you are in Melaka, try it out. If not you wouldn't know what to answer when people ask if you try their rice ball =)

This restaurant – Famosa Chicken Rice Ball – Chicken rice balls weren't really that remarkable unfortunately. They were a little dry and too packed for my liking. What makes this place really special is the restaurant itself.
