One of the dish that caught our attention is Loy Kee Wanton Noodle as a number of patrons in other tables have it ordered on their table. We did not realized we have tried it previously when they used to operate at Lebuh Kimberly. The noodles were served al-dente and briming with nice sesame oil flavour, although we felt the pepper was overwhelming. On the other hand, we also had the wanton soup and enjoyed it much. The wanton is packed with nicely seasoned filling.
the food here is pretty good though.
Meanwhile, don’t miss the Kuantan Road curry mee served in a soup boiled with a combination of coconut milk and chili. A standard bowl of curry mee comes with a choice of noodles, along with beansprouts, cuttlefish, cockles, taufu bok, prawns, and pig’s blood cubes. If you are really hungry, have the curry mee with extra roast pork.
Chapel Street Cafe
This curious black-painted building in the neighborhood (of Medan Lim Cheng Teik) looks severe, especially with a small signage, the suspense gets stronger. Step in the cafe and you will be enwrapped in a heavy metal room (in shades of black and white) with jail door and red bricks, the industrial vibe here in bold. The two-week old cafe has an average-small menu but given that they are still new, the place is worth a second look. Medan Lim Cheng Teik is a small road off Kelawei Road; from Burmah Road (pass by Gleneagles Hospital) to Kelawei Road, make a left turn to the first junction to your left. Go straight and you will find Chapel Street Cafe right in front of you.
My personal favorite food here is their Classic Brulee cake. It is actually a cheese cake made into classic brulee type. The outer layer is consisting of a rich custard base topped with a layer of hardened caramelized sugar with soft cheese cake on the inside. This is tasty.
There is nothing special about the other food that is serve here and they tasted average.
Here's the location.
Well, we were intrigued by the Bubble Milk Tea Cheesecake (RM 22). It is expensive but the odd combination of pearls and cheesecake worked well miraculously. The cheesecake was spot on for us - semi rich and dense in texture, though some who used to a strong cheese taste with excessive creaminess would be lamenting after having it.
The Shrimp Aglio E Olio was alright... at least the texture and flavors were legit but for Rm 26, there were only 4 tiny Shrimps (with a couple of sad Cherry Tomatoes?)... we thought it was a rip-off for that hefty price tag
Teriyaki Chicken Stew with Onsen Egg Don. One can be happily lost in the comforting mix of rice with soft creamy egg and savory braised chicken. The dish also comes with a yuzu ponzu salad.
One of their signature dishes- Kappa Soup... is a Pan Mee-like noodle dish served in a broth cooked with Clams and topped with Cheese as well as a spicy touch (a splash of Chili flakes). The concoction was somewhat special- nothing particularly distinctive. The seafood sweetness from the Claims was not apparent or perhaps, overshadowed by the addition of Cheese. To be frank, we thought it was overly salty to our liking.
The Stir Fried Noodles and Sweet and Sour Chicken were equally delicious though; the former dish was expertly cooked with the alluring Wok Hei while the latter dish was nicely executed- the Chicken was crisp and the sauce paired perfectly well with the Chicken. There were some hits and misses but generally, a pretty decent Chinese restaurant.
Those who are in the know would order their home-made Lor Bak (5-spiced meat wrap). Though the 5-spice factor was not too bold but the texture was meatily-satisfying. It uses cut-meat instead of minced version so it has a more pleasing bite
This makes it an ideal place for those early bird who would like to grab some breakfast.
Sourdough.
The service is good, food is tasty and the people working here is very friendly.
If you are a Mille Crepe Cake fans, then Inherit Taste Patisserie | 承品烘培 which is located along Jalan Imigresen in Georgetown, Penang will definetly get your craving for Crepe Cake fixed.
Indeed, the Mango Crepe Cake looks appetizing the moment it was served to our table. While we both agreed the layering was done perfectly and appreciated the less sweet version of the crepe cakes, the flavour did not bond well to our taste buds. We felt there is a kind of sugary syrup, flavour or perhaps cream that made us feel surfeiting upon consuming. The taste is especially prominent around the area where mangoes are present.
J-Garden is frequented by Japanese expatriates, a feat which speaks volumes about the authenticity of the yōshoku cuisine here!
Starting with some of J Garden's best sellers- the Tender Chicken Nanban is a dish not to be missed. It is definitely a dish that cannot be found else where... juicy, tender Chicken meat coated with airy batter being fried till perfection and topped with sweet-savory-sour, addictive caramelized Onion sauce. Good on its own or even better to enjoy with their creamy home-made Tartar sauce. While it is contenting to enjoy the dish alone, it is more tummy filling and palate-pleasing to make it a set (additional Rm 6)... with Japanese Rice, Miso Soup and various condiments.
J Garden serve some Japanese-fusion-Italian-Western kind of food, which i would say, J Garden mix things up themselves.
This nasi kandar place in Penang (295-A Jalan Burma) came up in conversation tonight with some folks from KL, so I stopped in to give it a shot. Despite what seems to be a mess above, my selections of mutton, fried egg, and chili pepper on rice above were deliciously greasy, making it a nice way to close the day with some salty carbs.
Restoran Mohamed Raffee Nasi Kandar is an iconic culinary gem nestled within the heart of the city. With a rich history spanning over six decades, this family-owned establishment has become a cherished institution among locals and tourists alike. Since its inception, it has been handed down through three generations, preserving the essence of time-honored recipes and maintaining the spirit of warm hospitality.
Raffee nasi kandar stall has been operating since 1959. And people are going crazy over its nasi kandar.
Next on the list is Fish Bone Soup with Abalone, Scallop and Whelk Abalone. The soup is brimming with rich flavour with all exquisite seafood treasure to symbolize its superiority. This is definitely not a choice if you are looking for a soup that offers light taste.
Maple Palace Chinese Restaurant is like a 5 stars restaurant with really good service, nice environment and tasty food.
Established in 2009, Maple Palace Chinese Restaurant 美寶閣 has been a proven favorite of diners in Penang. Housed in a sprawling heritage mansion on Northam Road (Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah), the restaurant offers huge dining area and private rooms with cozy and warm ambiance for diners to retreat to. With an impressive menu of Cantonese cuisine, the restaurant offers options for large and small events, to wedding receptions and also specially-curated set with off-menu dishes based on diner’s preferences.
The spiced coconut-based soup is very fragrant and that scoop of well-cooked chili paste and drip of chili oil gives you that ultimate kick. The topping is fresh and comes together well with the creamy and aromatic soup. For me, this is my choice for white curry mee in Penang.
The Shop of Duck Blood Curry Mee, Burma Road is now added with additional culinary. There is a stall of Koay Teow Thng which also sells Lam Mee is operating in the shop for just 4 days ago. The soup base is cooked with old hens which are very flavourful and the lam mee is also delicious and tastes nostalgic. The Chee Cheong Chok is very thick and yummy. Once start, unable to stop.
Duck blood curry mee is one of the unique and rare culinary in Penang. This is also one of the traditional and classic flavors. The chili paste of this stall is packed with char-grill flavor which brings the taste to another higher level. The texture of the duck blood is so soft and smooth which is one of the delicacies.
The place spacious, airy and with a 50m Olympic size pool next to our dining area, there is no need for air-con and its a good thing during pandemic times.
Very nice! Like he said, I would enjoy this very much and I did. It has been ages since I had asam fish. This one tastes quite close to my grandma's version.
I do not see any surprise from CRC...indeed some disappointment on the food quality...heee!
Penang Food Trail 2022
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! We definitely want to return when we head up north again (salivating as we type this) and pray that it won’t become too famous then so we can get our fix easily. This is truly one of the best koay teow th’ng in Penang.
Stone pot steamboat serving original coconut broth with "kampung" chicken with strictly no MSG.
