Hello, fellow food enthusiasts! Today, I'm taking you on a culinary journey to a hidden gem that's been serving up a taste of nostalgia for decades. Kafe Peng Hooi 槟园茶室 is a renowned eatery known for its unforgettable duck drumstick mee shua (鸭腿面线).
Tiger Char Koay Teow 老虎炒果条 is the well claimed one of the best char koay teow in Penang. Many places in Penang serve Tiger Char Koay Teow including OO Cafe. However, for me, I still love the stall located at Ping Hooi Cafe on Carnovan Street. This stall Char Koay Teow is fried by Tiger's wife and the koay teow is packed with chargrill flavor while the prawns are big and juicy. Moreover, for those that love duck eggs, they can be ordered to replace chicken eggs for a more bouncy and smooth texture.
I was there relatively early way before the crowds come in, and comfortably sat in and enjoyed my morning as its first customer.
Tiger Char Koay Teow is one of the Best Char Koay Teow in George Town, Penang during our trip here in Penang! The char koay teow here is full of "wok hey" or "wok hei" (breath of wok). Char Koay Teow is definitely one of the must-eat when you come to Penang! The wok hey in this fried koay teow is no joke here (not the saucepan hey XD)
Tiger CKT is one of those famous CKT that located in a Old Coffee Shop in George Town, which is open for breakfast and lunch, perserving is RM7.50 at this date and time, comes with 2 large prawns, and will customize the CKT to your requirements. I would rate this place is as one of the Top CKT in town. (personal).
The Char Koay Teow may not look much different from the others, but it was really delicious, fragrantly fried with lots of “wok-hei” flavour! We suspected the use of duck egg made the delectable plate even more fragrant. It didn’t leave a very greasy feel too. Much better than the one we had from an unknown stall in Pulau Tikus the previous day!
The place was in in full swing on Sunday morning circa 10.00am and we were lucky to secure the last table or else we might need to wait table for hours according to Ken. We placed our order and wait patiently for our food to be served. There are other foods available in the coffee shop too such as prawn noodle (known as Hokkien Mee in Penang), Lor Bak and etc.
Since it is popular now, it is hard to even to get a seat in the restaurant. Remember to order first as it might take ages! The price has gone up too! From RM 4.00 a plate to RM 5.00 a plate now for a small plate size of char kuey teow.
Tiger premium Char Koay Teow here @ RM6 is a healthy portion that consists of extra prawns, bamboo clams and fried using duck egg – something common in the mainland Penang but quite rare in the island.
