Air Itam Sister Curry Mee Chee Cheong Fun at Air Itam Penang Malaysia
The famous Sister Curry Mee was founded by two iconic sisters in Air Itam, Penang since 1946. They're now in their late 80s and the stall has been taken over by their grandniece. We're fortunate that the curry mee stall will continue to serve this iconic dish in its original recipe brought down from the sisters
The soup not really thick but it have the aromatic hint of coconut and curry blend in it. The bowl of curry mee is served with the noodles, cuttle fish, coagulated pig blood and tauhu-pok and the curry paste. Indulge this sinfully addictive bowl of curry noodles and you will totally in love with them.
Start with the Basque Burnt Cheese Cake- probably the fridge was not properly tuned to the right temperature but the texture of the cake was overly soft and mushy. The Cheese flavor was discernible but not so much on the burnt-caramelized flavor
The taste of the Laksa is refreshing and delightful, one of the good Laksa in Penang that must try.
Assam Laksa consists of a fish broth cooked with Tamarind (Asam Gelugor), it is served with the white laksa noodles, topped with pineapples, cucumber slices, chopped onions, torch ginger, mint leaves, sliced chillies, and a spoon of prawn paste goodness known as har gao. The bowl of Assam laksa here is very well-balanced flavour, it is a combination of sweet, sour and spicy, with lots of texture from the different ingredients. It is simply a bowl of delicious noodles!
This koay kak only cost RM 3.80! Very cheap, tasty and superb! They really cut it into small pieces. Just nice in terms of not salty, and still has a lot of chai poh. Another good thing is the egg is done not that well done, which is how I liked it!
Air Itam Duck Rice located in Air Itam Market Annex Wet Market is one of the hidden gem in Penang. Its Duck rice is loved by locals, and we can see why! The duck meat has been beautifully braised till it is tender and flavour infused into the meat and the pork melts as soon as we put in our mouth.
The nostalgic and classic taste is still maintained in this stall. This stall starts its business at 8am until its homemade noodles are sold out. Besides Hakka noodle, this stall is also famous for its yong tau fu. For those looking for old time taste this is the stall that must not be missed.
Overall, Modern Asia Kitchen is a decent place to enjoy good dim sum.
The Fried Shrimp Rolls left us with the deepest impression, unlike any Shrimp Rolls, Modern Asia Kitchen uses some pastry skin (almost similar to McD's pie skin) instead of the customary beancurd sheet; the filling was generously filled with bouncy, juicy Shrimps. It was dangerously addictive and definitely pleasant on the palate.
The taste of the curry mee is milky, packed with coconut milk flavor, savory and spicy. I love the thick and aroma soup that make this curry mee delicious.
Thus, we only have a Farm Zaab Noodles (RM 14.90) that comes with 2 pack of Thailand mama brand instant noodles, minced pork, slice pork, spring balls and eggs, then we requested modification by having the enoki mushroom replacing 1 pack of maggie. The noodles are cooked to al-dente and served with a variety of ingredients, much like a luxury pot of noodle. On top of that, the idea of having the noodle in a cooking pot may look primitive but it created an unique experience.
Located in a small ally off the Air Itam Market, this stall is selling one of the classic and delicious Lam Mee in Penang. One of the focuses is the intense spiciness of the sambal (chili paste), the broth that simmers with pork ribs making the lamb mee aromatic and flavourful. Selling Lam Mee on Wed and Sun, selling fried Yee Foo Mee on Tuesday and Thursday, and Saturday for Jawa Mee. Off for Monday and Friday.
Personally, I enjoyed Roy A1 Nasi Kandar much. On top of getting a plate of Nasi Kandar that fits my appetite, I can avoid the flock of tourists at the same time.
The noodles were alright- pretty standard and not disappointing. The texture of the Udon was lovely, at least not over-cooked to a slouchy soft texture.
Here's the location.
Char Koay Kak in Reservoir Garden is serving one of the best in Penang due to the char grill flavor and savory of the delicious char koay kak.
Frying the oyster omelet for more than 20 years, the owner of the stall is always busy frying at night time. The oysters are big and juicy covered with the flavorful omelet, this dish is so unforgettable and it make you want to come back for more.
My verdict : With its 4 ringgit per bowl price, everything’s worth it! The sour tamarind sauce, the salty and thick fish stock blended so well with chillies and the herbs and noodles and everything on it! Thankfully, I had the chance to understand the logic of CNN in naming Penang Assam Laksa as 7th out of 50 Most Delicious Foods in the World! It was indeed, delicious!
My Penang laksa. The soup base is very flavorful and filled with generous amount of flaked mackerels. The 'ha-ko'/ thick prawn paste amplify the flavor of this dish much, much more. Sweet, sourish taste with refreshing mint and onion slices stimulates all my taste buds!
不过,随着《自在饭店》因为疫情影响,宣布结业后,心里还是感到不舍和唏嘘。
Overall, Zi Zai Restaurant offers a nice dining experience and offers a reminiscence of home cook style dishes, as their restaurant signboard also suggests the title "ko zha bi". The taste still lingering in my taste buds during recalling and it truely reflects the authentic home cook dishes. Price and quantity is user friendly at the same time and it would be an excellent choice for family dine in. Plenty of parking spaces available but the numbers of tables in the restaurant is somehow limited but I believe extra tables can be added at the external area of the restaurant.

Foodhub by you and me is one of the new food courts located at Kampung Melayu. This food court is very cozy and spacious. There are varieties of good food stalls in this food court. The Tomyam noodle here is flavourful and appetizing. The roast pork here is good too. The Granny's Char Koay Teow here is also packed with chargrill aroma and excellent. The Signature Tau Hua here is also very yummy. The rice sets from Yummy Kitchen are also very famous. While the Bang Bang Chicken served savory and crispy chicken skin and L-shape.
Nasi Kandar Kampung Melayu is one of the best spots for Nasi Kandar when you visit Penang.
If you love spicy, do prepare to be numb, drench in sweat and tears keep dripping. Its super spicy and usually I mix it with the one without spicy to get the mild spicy taste.
I believe you can see how much effort been put it to maintain the freshness of the fruit by judging on the amount of ice they have added on. We think fruits are best to go with their original sauce.
As for the freshly cut fruits, the choices are way more than the usual Rojak, the special ones are definitely Jack Fruit, Cherry Tomatoes, Papaya and Water Apple. The freshness of the fruits was successfully preserved thanks to the massive usage of ice cubes to maintain the temperature. Truly refreshing to have a skewer or two under the scorching hot sun.
