The term came into common usage in self-reference to the large ethnic Chinese migrant population in Southeast Asia. As a result of historical migrations, colonisation by foreign powers, and its geographical position within its wider home region, Nanyang's culinary style in the present day is primarily a melange of traditions from its Malay, Chinese, Indian, Indonesian and ethnic Bornean citizens, with heavy to light influences from Thai, Portuguese, Dutch, and British cuisines, to name a few. This resulted in a symphony of flavours, making Nanyang cuisine highly complex and diverse. A common sight in Nanyang, menus often feature offerings like nasi lemak, boiled eggs, roti bakar, noodle dishes, bread and kuih, Fish and Chip, Chicken Chop and chicken rice. Coffee 1911's Platter features a blend of Western and Asian elements, the most distinctive item is of course none other than its home-made Otak-Otak. The combination of Beef Bacon, Sausages, Otak-Otak and Toast does not seem to blend in... perhaps it works for sharing but does not constitute a good main. Also, for the price of Rm 24, we thought it was a little on the expensive side

The course mellows out to finish in a Tuak Sorbet with Gula Melaka Syrup, Coconut Flakes, and Rose Rice Cake. To get the perfect taste, we were instructed to blend in the ingredients together. It is somehow more flavorful, balanced by a delicate sweetness and texture. All well ends well with a cup of Nutmeg Tea.

Our favourite here would be their Teow Chew Style Spicy and Sour Soup (RM 12.80). You can to choose the types of noodles and what toppings you like to have. Garnished with chives and preserved vegetable, the soup is the key point that whips up the wow factor. It packs a balanced taste between spicy and sour (you get to choose your spiciness level but medium should be great), and induced a warm sensation on your throat and stomach lining upon gulping it. Somehow, this simple dish managed to squeeze into our list of comfort food!

We had some small bites for the night too. For beers drinkers, the Mish Mash Roast Pork (RM 30) which is seasoned with 5 different spices might be a great choice. It had a nice balance of lean to fat meat and a slight crisp skin. Dip the roast pork to the different sauces provided for a better enjoyment.

This is my favourite which is Artisan bread, also the simplest of all. A simple toast with just butter and blueberry jam. The toast is so good that the texture is nice, where the size is also slightly thicker, spread it with butter and bluberry I would go 3 slices of it. One of the problem for travelers or outstation guest that drive will be parking issue as the place here is quite limited in parking space. Price range of this hotel is starting from RM300 onwards.

White curry mee in Red Garden is really a hidden gem that not many people know! The taste is rich, and after adding the chili it makes a sleek finishing for the soup. Strongly recommended if you happen to visit Red Garden. Lor Mee is another great option too, having a aromatic soup with decent fluidity despite it being a starch soup. The Char Siew Rice is one of the choice from the daily set menu. Priced at RM 13.80, it is a real bargain considering the amount of char siew that we get. The rice was slightly mushy for our liking, especially when it was stirred with the onsen egg. Char siew was cooked to nice texture and the taste was averagely ok. But the real draw of the dish was the Risotto, unlike traditional creamy ones, Chef Jackie's rendition comes with a refreshing tropical tone... evidently seen from the addition of Pineapples and Apples, apart from the sweet Vegetables (like Asparagus and Carrots). Just wait for the water to boil and you can start dipping your Lok Lok into the hot water. Mix and match with your own choice of seafood/fish balls or whatever ingredients. One thing for sure, their seafood were very fresh on that day, particularly the squid and prawns, so succulent and juicy, I don't mind having more right now.
