It has been unbearably hot here lately and the cold and refreshing pomelo salad (RM8.00)…that we had was definitely a welcome relief.

Ordered their famous sweet and sour fish. This is o chio (ikan bawal hitam) for RM 26. It’s a pretty good sized fish and it’s been deep fried so all the bones and fins are edible. I love their sweet and sour sauce too

My girl wanted their pizza mascarpone but they were out of the vegetable for the topping, the aragula so in the end we settled for their Pizza Prosciutto e Funghi (RM32.00)…that we had here before and yes, the one here was all right as well.

Chicken chop (RM9.50)…with mushroom sauce – I guess that alone would be quite filling already seeing that the serving here is usually quite big.

We love their beef pies a lot so I ordered one (RM9.00)…to share for the simple reason that we all had our own individual orders and yes, it was, as always, very nice. I do wish though that they would do something about the presentation, some lettuce and cherry tomatoes by the side or a couple of slices of tomato and cucumber perhaps to give it a bit of colour, if nothing else, instead of serving it on its own just like that…and they could have used a smaller plate, a saucer perhaps – the pie is not that big!

My girl ordered their chicken meatballs with BBQ sauce and mashed potatoes…and yes, the meatballs were good, complemented by the delightful sauce but in her opinion, the mashed potatoes here or here are a cut above this one.

My cousin loves the kampua here and so do many other people. I’m not such a huge fan since they’re not the most authentic version. Rasa Sayang uses the curly kolo mee noodles and minced meat.

I had their curry lamb rice (RM20.90)……which was all right as well. Their lamb curry…that took a long time coming, for reasons unknown, was nicer than what I had the other day but they certainly were not very generous with the meat and it was not spicy at all. I was thinking of the very much nicer authentic North Indian mutton biryani here the whole time for just 10 sen more, RM21.00 and the biryani rice is anytime a lot nicer than the plain rice with a sprinkling of fried shallots or whatever on top…or the just-as-nice Bangladeshi lamb curry (RM19.00 only with rice) here. The brinjal fritters and the onion rings failed to save the day – I remember enjoying the rice sets here (RM16.90) and what they have by the side there a whole lot more.

I dropped by here that day to buy the yam puffs (RM2.50 each)…that my girl likes a lot and since she was home those few days, she could enjoy them for breakfast or for tea. They are very nice and I like the fibrous exterior, the char siew filling is like what is in their steamed buns

This bowl of stewed pork rice (RM7.90)…that I would not mind ordering sometimes as they do it pretty well here plus the complimentary soup…with tiny cubes of tofu and sweet corn that comes with some of their dishes is very nice as well.

I decided to throw caution to the wind and order the butter prawns (RM20.00)…as we had not had that for a while now. Usually, we would go for the creamy or butter scotch or honey “prawn balls” – prawns without head or shell, all curled up into a ball after cooking as it seemed to be cheaper that way. I expected whole prawns like the ones we had that evening to cost a hand or a foot but it did not turn out to be very expensive, after all and of course, the best part would be the fact that they did it really well. The buttery fibrous egg topping was perfectly done and we sure enjoyed this dish very much.

My missus had the beef noodles…Taiwanese-style that we used to enjoy a lot, my girl especially but since there are noodles in it and probably soy sauce as well, my girl cannot have that any longer. The mum said that it was still good, just like before so that probably would be one of the crowd pullers at this place.

I ordered their herbal chicken soup rice noodles…which was good – it tasted like what we cooked using one of those herbal packs that my girl and the mum brought back from Korea but I guess I am somewhat old-school so I would prefer our own Foochow herbal chicken soup – the char bee lau or the pek ting eyok. or even when we steam our own chicken soup with seng see (the more affordable ginseng hairs) and/or dong quai.

Yes, the mee (kampua mee) was nice but I don’t think the taste was quite like what I used to buy from the stall near my house. Maybe it is because somebody else is making it or the taste has evolved into something quite different over the years, I really can’t tell. The pian sip soup was great too and I did enjoy the coffee…

I saw that there was liver and beef tripe too so I had the kampua kosong (without meat)…with this big bowl of liver soup…which was very good. I could not detect the traditional Foochow red wine in it but it was very strong with the taste of the liver plus I liked the special chili dip that came with it. The set was RM5.00 so with the drink, the breakfast I had that morning was RM6.00 altogether.

On the other hand, the roti telur…(roti canai with egg) that I also ordered was very nice so I guess it would be safe to assume that the roti canai would be great too. Well, thankfully, at least one of the two was nice though I was wishing they could be a bit more generous with the dip – I really had to stretch it towards the end so I would not end up eating roti telur plain, without any dip. Perhaps I could have asked for more but I did not do that.

Went for the kasam babi hutan (preserved wild boar)…instead. It was very nice, slightly salty/sourish and not so strong on the wild boar fragrance and taste. I mixed it with the daun ubi and ate the two together and that sure brought the taste to a whole new level.

Kuih akok. It did not turn out to be anything so very nice – in fact, it wasn’t anything much at all and I thought it was so very expensive. We can easily buy our very much nicer local Malay kuihs at half the price, 3 for RM1.00 only and enjoy it a whole lot more

After all these years, I do think the beef noodles…tasted quite good but it used to have a very much stronger beef flavour before. I guess that is to be expected as beef is now very expensive and at those prices, one cannot afford to be too generous with it.

I ordered the one in a claypot with the milky soup with hung ngang, the big bihun (RM8.50)…Both our orders sure did not look anywhere near as perfect as the one in the picture that we saw in the magazine.I did try the milky one initially and I felt it was way too milky…like drinking milk and in dire need of some more ingredients to make it a lot more tastier and my girl liked it that way but yes, the fish on the whole was very nice – this giant garoupa or kerapu in Malay or as it is known by its local name, ikan kertang, anytime better than dory, so I gave most of what there was in my bowl of tom yam bihun to her to enjoy.

I decided to go for their sambal eco fish (RM14.90)…one of my favourites here and I had not had that for quite sometime now. Just like the Assam Fish, they use the tilapia from Batang Ai, so fresh that at times, they are even delivered alive! The sambal was at best, o.k. and as expected for a place like this, it was not spicy and I wished they had some cut fresh chilies in the soy sauce – they had that in the photograph in the above display on the wall. Thankfully, the fish was great and I liked the pickled cucumber too so I would say that I did quite enjoy the meal.
