It has been unbearably hot here lately and the cold and refreshing pomelo salad (RM8.00)ā¦that we had was definitely a welcome relief.
For something a little stronger and spicier, I had their lamb curry (RM19.00, with rice)ā¦
Tried the green curry chicken (RM16.00 with rice)ā¦and instantly declared that it was very nice
I also ordered their seafood pasta aglio olio (RM28.00)ā¦and yes, this was very good, very generous with the herbs used and that gave it a really nice fragrance and flavour. They use their own-made pasta here ā I always see them sharing the photographs on their Facebook page and it looked like there were two types in what we had ā yellow and greenā¦
We ordered the Ceasar salad (RM18.00)ā¦to share and the moment it was served, my girl remarked that the egg would surely get my nod of approval. Indeed, I was delighted to see the soft, runny yolk. Perfegg!!!
My girl wanted their pizza mascarpone but they were out of the vegetable for the topping, the aragula so in the end we settled for their Pizza Prosciutto e Funghi (RM32.00)ā¦that we had here before and yes, the one here was all right as well.
I also asked for his pian sip (RM3.00)ā¦and this, I would say, was good, as good as any of the good ones I have had around town.
Ordered their famous sweet and sour fish. This is o chio (ikan bawal hitam) for RM 26. Itās a pretty good sized fish and itās been deep fried so all the bones and fins are edible. I love their sweet and sour sauce too
The long beans fried with eggā¦was so very fragrant ā how come we do not get that when we fry our own at home, I wonder. I would prefer slicing the vegetable more thinly though so it would be much easier to chew.
I went for the sizzling nasi biryani with beef rendang (RM15.90)ā¦except that it was not sizzling when it was served but I really enjoyed itā¦a lot!
This bowl of stewed pork rice (RM7.90)ā¦that I would not mind ordering sometimes as they do it pretty well here plus the complimentary soupā¦with tiny cubes of tofu and sweet corn that comes with some of their dishes is very nice as well.
My girl wanted their sizzling barbecued honey spare ribs (RM25.20)ā¦so of course, whatever she wants, she gets! It was as nice as before and had the very familiar corn-on-the-cob and sweet peas but instead of the wedges, they now served this bowl of potato gratinā¦in a bowl separately alongsideā¦and yes, my girl loved that too. She was worried initially that she would not be able to finish as the serving was huge and would probably have to enlist my help but her fears were absolutely unfounded ā she licked everything clean! LOL!!!
We love their beef pies a lot so I ordered one (RM9.00)ā¦to share for the simple reason that we all had our own individual orders and yes, it was, as always, very nice. I do wish though that they would do something about the presentation, some lettuce and cherry tomatoes by the side or a couple of slices of tomato and cucumber perhaps to give it a bit of colour, if nothing else, instead of serving it on its own just like thatā¦and they could have used a smaller plate, a saucer perhaps ā the pie is not that big!
My girl ordered their chicken meatballs with BBQ sauce and mashed potatoesā¦and yes, the meatballs were good, complemented by the delightful sauce but in her opinion, the mashed potatoes here or here are a cut above this one.
My daughterās barbecued chicken with fruit salad and baked wedges (RM15.90)ā¦with rosemary sauce was done to perfectionā¦and yes, she too enjoyed her order in no small measure.
My girl and the mum wanted the kampua meeā¦while I had the mee pok
I asked for a bowl of the beef soupā¦to share and yes, it was very nice
My cousin loves the kampua here and so do many other people. Iām not such a huge fan since theyāre not the most authentic version. Rasa Sayang uses the curly kolo mee noodles and minced meat.
Minus the fragrance of the spices, it was more like plain soy sauce broth. Otherwise, everything was fine with it ā letās just say this is one place to consider if you are in this part of town and you feel like having kueh chap. I had the special (RM8.00) but I asked for an extra stewed egg so that was RM9.00 altogether.
We all had the nasi ayam penyet (RM5.50)ā¦and yes, it was very good ā I loved it and I liked how the vegetables were lightly blanched ā they would just serve them raw at most, if not all, of the other places and I am not entirely fond of long beans that way.
All in all, I would say it was all right even though the cucur wasnāt the way it should be and it was not all that nice, actually. I may go for it should I happen to be around there but no, Iām afraid you will not see me going out of my way to eat this.
Now, talking about history repeating itself, I had the roast duck kampua mee then and somehow or other, I ended up ordering it again (RM7.50)ā¦ Yes, it was very nice and I did enjoy it. I let my girl try the siew yoke and she liked it so much that she insisted on buying some home for dinner. The roast duck was good tooā¦
I ordered the duck kampua with one stewed egg (RM7.00)ā¦from another stall there and yes, I would say it was nice as well just that the noodles was not exactly kampua mee, very thin and more yellowish and it did not taste like it either. Whatever it is in that somewhat small bowl, for that kind of money, I donāt think I will be in a hurry to come back again for more.
Chicken chop (RM9.50)ā¦with mushroom sauce ā I guess that alone would be quite filling already seeing that the serving here is usually quite big.
I had the fried rice with masak hitam beef (RM8.00)ā¦and that somewhat disastrous-looking fried egg on topā¦but thankfully, the yolk was still soft and runny so never mind the look, it was to my liking even though I am very sure the guy is quite capable of doing a much better job at it like this one that I had here beforeā¦
I had the nasi lemak (RM4.50)ā¦No, this is not my favourite in town ā there is only a slight hint of the lemak-ness (richness owing to the santan/coconut milk added). However, I do enjoy the one here as I would usually request for the curry chicken/beef or masak hitam beef to go with it. Even without those, it is still very nice as they are very generous with the very nice sambalā¦
I tasted it and it sure swept me off my feet! There was this very strong taste of good quality traditional Foochow red wine and she certainly was very generous with the ginger ā I absolutely enjoyed it, my new favourite, I must say and I sure would be making my way there again for more.
And now, the moment of truth ā the rice! No, Iām afraid it was not lemak enough. I could detect the fragrance of the pandan but not the lemak-ness of the santan (coconut milk). All in all, I would say that I did enjoy eating it, mixed with the sambal and everything else but no, you sure would not catch me rushing back for more.
Well, I had this oneā¦the other day and I shared the photograph on Facebook with the caption, āSimply the best!ā My bad! I liked it so much that it just slipped my mind that I should say it was my favourite, it was very goodā¦anything but āthe bestā.
Knowing how much she loves sotong (squid), I asked for their crispy squid ring (RM13.50)ā¦which we all enjoyed even though the batter was quite different from the usual, hence its pale colour.
Thankfully, the kampua mee (RM2.80)ā¦was very good ā I certainly would rank it among my favourites and it is a little cheaper than a lot of places around town, usually RM3.00ā¦or more.
It tasted all right, more like kampua mee, I would say, right down to the chili sauce given. By right, we would get sliced chili soaked in vinegar with kolo mee. The minced meatā¦looked like it had been reheated over and over again many times till it became rather salty, not something to my liking and the serving was really huge ā in fact, I was quite shocked when I saw the lady taking the noodles to cook so of course, I did not finish all of it. All I wanted was something light for tea but there was nothing else.
I asked for the kampua mee with egg (RM3.00) and got the noodles, kosong (without meat)ā¦and one wok-fried eggā¦Yes, the mee was great and the egg was done the way I love it!
On the other hand, the roti telurā¦(roti canai with egg) that I also ordered was very nice so I guess it would be safe to assume that the roti canai would be great too. Well, thankfully, at least one of the two was nice though I was wishing they could be a bit more generous with the dip ā I really had to stretch it towards the end so I would not end up eating roti telur plain, without any dip. Perhaps I could have asked for more but I did not do that.
I decided to try the mee kampua sup sapi (RM5.00)ā¦ The soup did not have any beef flavour ā if it had, I could not taste it at all but that is not to say that it wasnāt nice. I thought it was pretty good, something like kampua mee soup or what we call chin thāng mee (clear soup noodles) but of course, this being a halal place, they would not be using pork bones for the stock to make the soup.
I ordered the one in a claypot with the milky soup with hung ngang, the big bihun (RM8.50)ā¦Both our orders sure did not look anywhere near as perfect as the one in the picture that we saw in the magazine.I did try the milky one initially and I felt it was way too milkyā¦like drinking milk and in dire need of some more ingredients to make it a lot more tastier and my girl liked it that way but yes, the fish on the whole was very nice ā this giant garoupa or kerapu in Malay or as it is known by its local name, ikan kertang, anytime better than dory, so I gave most of what there was in my bowl of tom yam bihun to her to enjoy.
Iāve always loved the kway teow thāng in Penang and elsewhere so I asked for the kway teow soup and steamed chicken (RM15.00)ā¦and yes, I sure enjoyed the noodles in the clear, refreshing soupā¦and Iāve had steamed chicken at a lot of places here but for reasons unknown, I thought the one hereā¦was a cut above the rest and I did like it a lot.
I ordered the tomato kway teow special that I had before not too long ago, the regular not the special and it was really good. The kway teow was so very well-friedā¦I could detect the wok hei fragrance as I loosened the strands of the noodles.
Soon, my order arrived (RM8.00)ā¦- my Foochow fried noodles, the moon version, special with all the liver and innards, char siew, strips of meat, fish cake slices, fried tofu and oh me oh my, it was as good as it looked.
Fried kway teow (flat rice noodles), wet (with sauce/gravy) I tried it and was glad to find that it was very nice. It had that much coveted wok hei fragrance and the guy was very generous with the added ingredientsā¦unlike elsewhere where you will get bits of meat and green vegetables hardly visible to the naked eye for that same amount of money.
Once the burger was done, I took itā¦home and tried it right away to see if it was any good. It was somewhat disappointing, rather blandā¦
Of course, I simply had to drop by and get myself a slice(RM11.21)ā¦and yes, it was so goodā¦but of course, at that price, I do not think I will be going back there for more all that soon. Perhaps I shall wait till my birthday and I can go and order one whole cake to indulge to my heartās content.
I ordered the kampua mee (RM3.30)ā¦at the stall thereā¦and yes, it was indeed very good! I would say that it was as original and authentic as it could get, just like what we enjoyed all throughout our growing up years.
