We headed to Oriental Pavilion at Jaya 33 for an oinking good time with a few swine lovers recently. Oriental Pavilion, voted as one of Asia’s Finest Chinese Restaurants by The Miele Guide and also rated as the only Chinese restaurant in KL’s Top 20 restaurants by CNN Travel Guide, has always been a popular hot spot for classic Cantonese cuisine. From dim sums to Cantonese roasts and dishes, diners can opt to dine at their main modern dining room or one of the eight private rooms available. From now till 31 July, Oriental Pavilion is running specials on their famed Roast Suckling Pig and Iberico Pork Ribs. A small serving Char Kuey Teow cost RM6 while the large one is RM7. The large Char Kuey Teow here is fairly big and can be quite filling even if you are a big eater. The Kuey Teow noodles were moist and loose with an amazing “wok hei” flavours which you can smell and taste. The grumpy uncle was indeed skilful in controlling the heat and wok which made the noodles charred but not burnt surface with a strong smoky aroma.

The char koay teow here is really good. Each plate of char koay teow is fried individually to ensure that the same standard is applied on each plate. The thing I like about this char koay teow is that it has enough ‘wok hei’.

Although the char siew pau comes with Iberico pork filling, I really can’t tell any difference from regular pork as I don’t think the uniqueness of Iberico can be discerned in the sweetish diced pork filling. Nevertheless, I enjoy the well-executed char siew pau.

Braised pork rice which was surprisingly good! Crystal-like rice which was squishy and fragrant went absolutely well with the savoury braised pork. Quite a shame that it was served last when all our tummy were already filled to the brim.

I liked the fried noodles the best. It had a rather unusual but appealing flavor. The dish originally comes in wet form, Cantonese style. I wasn’t in the mood for wet noodles and requested for a dry version, which they were nice enough to accommodate. The dry version, still came with a little gravy at the bottom but just enough to provide the noodles with some texture – thick, sticky, gooey feel. That gravy though – it was ginger-ish. I usually am not a fan of anything ginger, I simply do not like the overwhelming flavor but here, it somehow worked. It still was the first thing you’d taste but I guess the fact that it was mixed with the gravy that had on several other items, made it tolerably appealing. I liked the extra ‘kick’ the noodles offered.

The Sizzling Sambal Vegetarian Fish was another delicious dish. If you are a fan of those Asam Pedas fish dishes, like I do, then you’d like this tooo – minus the fish, of course, lol. Here, they use soy as a substitute for fish, it taste the same except the soy is a lot less fishy and more chewy. The sambal was yummy, as I said earlier- it tasted like your typical assam pedas gravy and it made a good gravy to eat with the brown rice.

The first entree was Roasted duck skin with black truffles and fresh fruits. This was a killer combo; so kudos to the chefs! The crispy duck skin had a melt-in-the-mouth layer of fat underneath, while the meat was tender and had none of the gamey flavour duck is notorious for. The bed of fresh fruit with a dusting of truffle was earthy, sweet, rich and refreshing at the same time.

One of my favorite things from this set is the dessert, the Chilled avocado pudding with citrus lemongrass sauce. Smooth and creamy, absolutely delish.. it's a must-try!
