Tao Chinese Cuisine Restaurant

InterContinental Kuala Lumpur 165 Jalan Ampang, 50450 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

“Tao”, which means peach in Mandarin, is the new restaurant located on level one of the hotel and is immediately recognizable with a vibrant design using the bloom of the pale pink April peach flowers as a signature motif and a spectacular cloud-like inspired ceiling giving an impression of dining under the stars. Its most distinguishable and memorable feature however are the hundreds of carefully selected ornate Chinese teapots that have been collected from around Asia and are displayed for diners to enjoy, inspect and purchase should they wish.

To make your mid – autumn more unique, Chef Lo’s comes up with the Shanghai Style Baked Black Pepper Smoked Duck Meat With Yam (上海黑椒煙鴨芋泥月餅). Inspired by the famous street snack, Scallion Pancake, during a trip in Taiwan, Chef Lo’s created an interpretive recipe in this unique mooncake using black pepper smoked duck and sweet yam paste. Encased in a light and flaky pastry, every bite is an orchestic experience in the mouth. This delicacy is only available for dine-in in Tao Chinese Cuisine for optimal taste and texture.

For the meat lovers, THIRTY8 offers Australian 'Diamantina' Red Wagyu or Black Angus Beef from Stanbroke Farms. We had the rib eye (350g, marbling score 6 - RM350), which was thoughtfully sliced for sharing. Beautifully tender, melt-in-the-mouth and flavorful meat, we certainly enjoyed this and went straight to steak heaven. So so good! I'm also eyeing the Tomahawk for my next visit, very reasonably priced at RM350 for 900g.

One of the signature (and popular) dishes here is the Nasi Ayam (RM55), aka chicken rice. Guests can opt for either roasted or poached chicken. We went for the roasted chicken and I was impressed by the generous portion that arrived. Tastewise, the chicken was tender and comes with three different dipping sauce - chilli, ginger and sweet soy sauce. The rice was pretty good too, as it was fragrant and flavorful. Overall, a pretty authentic rendition of a Malaysian favourite.

The London Roast Duck is priced at RM98 for half a duck, or RM188 for a whole duck. The duck is marinated with five spice powder, chef's special salt and other spices, and subsequently given a vinegar bath and hung for 6-8 hours for it to thoroughly dry. Spring onion is added to the cavity and sealed to keep in the juices and it is then roasted in the traditional Apollo oven for 30 minutes. It gets a final bath in hot oil before serving with chef's special homemade plum sauce. The duck is undeniably tender with beautifully crisp skin, well-worthy of its title.

My Personal Opinion With an affordably-priced CNY set menu from as low as RM1,238, this place offers value-for-money sets for a hotel-based restaurant in the city to host one of your CNY dinners. The stand-out dishes for me were the zesty yet fragrant roast chicken, scrumptious fried rice and absolutely crispy ninko with fluffy yam. Still one of our go-to places for CNY feasts for its value and service that don't disappoint! ^_~

Reasons to visit Spring Garden KLCC: great live seafood selection; love their twist on the CNY classic with the Fortune Yee Sang; the boys would definitely reorder the Braised Diced Beef Tenderloin in Hot Pot; I would go for the Steamed Cod Fish in Nynonya Sauce and when wanting a bit of decadence, I’d order the Baked Fresh Water Prawns with Cheese.

While there are many ways to enjoy the various fishes at Spring Garden, the Giant Grouper Steamed Nyonya style (RM25++/100g) is a solid choice for those who loves touches of spicy lemak notes on freshly steamed fish. A dish that goes well with steamed rice, the fish is sublime with fresh sweetness of the tender and smooth flesh.

have to admit that the food was more than decent as all four dishes we had were well executed. But prices may be on the high side and it'll be even pricier if we take the portion size into consideration. We ordered two portions for each of our dishes but the portion size actually seems more like one portion (when compared to other places)...hehe! ;D So, if you're a small-eater or someone who loves petite portions, then the food here could be just right for you. For me, it's one of those 'once in a long while' places to visit :)

3 spiciness levels for Ma Lat – Mild, Medium and Strong. We began with the mild spiciness 微辣, and requested to level up the spiciness to Medium 中辣. Personally, we preferred the Medium, as it brings out the flavours of herbs and spices better. Quite spicy but we enjoyed the tongue-numbing kick a lot.
