It's no secret that Butterworth is home to a few good restaurants that serve delicious Poached Chicken and one of the oldest names in this "expertise" is May Fong Restaurant at Kampung Benggali, Butterworth. It's impossible to miss the place during lunch hours, the place is often thronged with regular patrons especially during weekends. Families bringing the old and young is a common sight here, it is possibly the de-facto dining place for those living in the neighborhood. The menu is small here, in fact, only Poached Chicken and Wan Ton.... with Rice or Ipoh-styled Hor Fun (with add-ons like blanched Sprouts or Vegetables) but more than enough to entice the crowd. The best time to visit would be around 11 am or expect to wait for at least half an hour before your orders are served.

So we drop by early one evening, just two of us, and duly was guided to ordered the following items, Of course the Curry Prawns, Deep Fried Chicken, Kai Lan, Rice and Chinese Tea. As we were early @ 6.30pm, we got serve very fast with the food, which I believe was precook (to increase service speed) while we were there, the restaurant started to fill up, most patrons ordering about the same items as we did. My comments, which may not be the same as yours, we had a “Not bad, decent meal” for around RM40.

Right next to the bustling Butterworth outer ring road, Kampung Benggali is home to many local SMEs as well as private residential. Needless to say, the neighborhood does have something to offer (in terms of food). Koay Teow Th'ng with Roasted Pork seems to be the favorite food in the neighborhood but there are a few notable ones, with the most famous one being 'Kim Seng' but for this trip, we had 'Kampung Benggali Xio Bak Koay Teow Th'ng'... just a few shops away from 'Kim Seng'. Though less-crowded, the food quality was rather disappointing...

Typically, Pan Mee (a type of Hakka Noodles) is served in the shape of thin, round and smooth texture but Ah Ma Pan Mee, a newly opened Pan Mee specialist at 4th Street Club (Tye Sin Street) decides to do things differently. Using traditional recipe from Pahang, the noodle joint offers Pan Mee in its own style. While the soup bases and condiments are similar, the noodles stand out. They come in irregularly fat-round shape with al-dente (slightly chewy and bouncy) texture. Overall, the dim sum was good and the ambiance was also very comfortable. There is a multi-storey carpark at Straits Quay. As for the price, I would say it is considered reasonable judging by its location and ambiance. The ingredients used to prepare the dim sum were also very fresh. This is the ideal place for people living nearby to have dim sum without the hassle of going to town.

Tummy-filler was their signature Dong Bei Noodles, served with Minced Pork and crunchy diced Cucumber. The real soul to the dish was the Minced Pork- delicately seasoned right on the dot while the noodles were carefully cooked to the right texture. The Cucumber on the other hand, introduced another crunchy-juicy dimension to the dish; even better to go with their smoky Chili paste. We ended the meal with a memorable sweet treat- Sesame Bun. The Bun was served to us scorching hot; apply pressure and you will find the molten Sesame filling oozes out from the bun. The crust was nicely done- thin with a tawny crisp while the filling was carefully sweetened; it was jaw-droppingly good.

What happens if one of the local favorites- Koay Teow Th'ng got an upgrade? Find it out at Tung Kee Abalone Koay Teow Th'ng at Sri Bahari Road, a newly opened restaurant housed in one of the latest heritage-restoration projects in town. The Koay Teow Th'ng specialist boasts over its Abalone Koay Teow Th'ng or similar posh-offering... the lavish upgrade consists of Seafood wholesomeness and a heaps of meat. But everything comes with a price and that theory applies to Tung Kee's Koay Teow Th'ng as well, a basic bowl of Koay Teow Th'ng costs Rm 8.90 here while the premium ones would cost Rm 13.90 and Rm 35.90. As far as ambiance is concerned, the place is fully air conditioned with comfortable seating space.

It has a restricted menu.... it only offers an array of Roast meat... served with springy Wan Ton Mee (no Rice is served if you must know) as well as Porridge. We did not try any of the Sze Chuan-influenced Hot Pot but a classic Herbal Cordyceps Chicken Pot instead. The Chicken (and Herbs) are cooked by order, within 15 minutes, the rich, flavorful Chicken Pot would be ready. The broth turns from milky white to yellow and diners waiting in anticipation will be caught in a whiff of alluring aroma of Chinese Herbs. We love how in dept the flavors were and the Chicken pieces were most delicious and tender. As we were about to finish, we requested the server to refill the Chicken broth and made it into Steamboat. For the portion, we thought the prices were well-justified.

Wholly Cow's signature Gu Bak Koay Teow is exactly how one would expect a bowl of delicious classic Beef Noodles would taste like. The broth was amazing.... with a robust meat flavor. The accompanying Sprouts and Lettuce offered a juicy crunch to the noodles. But the real draw was the home-made Chili dip... with a strong fiery punch. Also, there was not much oil swimming in the broth so I guess that's a plus for me
