Rising Ramen TORI - Moulmein Rise 雷神拉面 Restaurant

9-1-01 (Unit 02), Moulmein Rise Shoppes 9 Jalan Moulmein 10350 Pulau Tikus Penang

Rising Ramen's humble beginning can be traced back to 2014 where it started off as a home based ramen restaurant. Mr Morioka, the founder, has a deep passion in ramen as it was his staple food throughout his teenage years in Tokyo. After visiting nearly 300 ramen restaurants throughout Japan, and also working in it for years, he decided to move to Kuching to open one himself. Thus, the birth of Rising Ramen. Rising Ramen started at his home in Kuching back in 2014. However, due to overwhelming response, it quickly grew into a restaurant within a period of just 2 months. The first restaurant was located in Jalan Song, Kuching, Malaysia and it subsequently grew in 2016 to its current location in CityOne Megamall, Kuching, Malaysia. To pursue his dreams of spreading his passion of Japanese ramen, Mr Morioka had been searching for the next suitable location to open his second branch. After many travels, he finally stumbled upon a potential location, a quick developing island in the North of Malaysia. This location was none other than Penang! And so the story continues..

Rising Ramen is a new Ramen joint in town, the lucky folks at Pulau Tikus can now enjoy a bowl of Ramen with rich meat broth and al-dente noodles at the new Moulmein Rise Shoppes, right behind Pulau Tikus market. Aims to be a Halal Ramen joint, the restaurant is now offering a Pork-Free menu featuring a few signature Ramen dishes as well as Donburi and side dishes. It is a joint venture between a local and a Japanese Ramen master; the interior decor is simple with a familiar Japanese-restaurant setting. But certain local traits can be seen as well... like the pickled Cili Padi resting on the table and the option of adding Fish Balls to the Ramen. Authenticity aside, the Ramen joint did manage to convince us with its slurp-licious noodles and flavorful broth.... most importantly, friendly price tags.

Zuzudo Ramen Bar is a new compact Ramen eatery housed within G Hotel Penang (at the al-fresco dining area between G Hotel and Gurney Plaza), the name 'Zuzu' resembles the sound when slurping noodles... in Japanese language; it does give some hints on how confident are they when it comes to their Ramen noodles. The usual menu seems impressive but the offering is limited during this soft launch period; the menu is dedicated entirely to serve Chicken Ramen (various flavors and no pork here). To our surprise, the prices are wallet-friendly yet, they don't skimp on serving portion; the only concern here is that the place gets warm especially on sultry hot afternoons so the heat-intolerant might find the lack of air-conditioner disturbing. If there's a Ramen lover in you, you should give this place a try.

If you do not take spicy food then Pork Broth Ramen would be your only option. The broth registered a rather bold meaty Pork-taste; the noodles were silky smooth but lacked of the al-dente texture. It was somewhat similar to Mee Suah. It comes in a hearty portion despite the wallet-friendly price tag

Oden in light soy-flavored broth comes in a variety of choices – Japanese fish cakes, tofu cakes, and skewered dried beancurd, a fantasy of “intestines”. The latter is one of my favorite ingredients, offering a nice chewy texture and strong flavor from the seasoning used. Eaten with a dab of green chili sauce definitely enhances the taste.
