With near to 10 years of experience in the food & beverage industry, BRFNC Food Services (same management as Blue Reef Fish N Chips) takes over the management of Loke Thye Kee, an iconic heritage building that sits right smack in central Georgetown. The 88 year old building stays as it is, the only change made was the newly rolled out menu. It is a space dedicated to marry history with good food. Loke Thye Kee was once famed as one of the first established Hainanese restaurants in Georgetown in the olden days; with that in mind, the new management decided to preserve the Hainanese element as well as introducing some Nyonya dishes to the menu. The old school atmosphere is a reminiscent of the past- the interior decoration suggests evocative memories on the Hainanese Kopitiam. The restaurant opens as early as 8:30 am and expect to see an intimate variety of Hainanese Coffee with Toast for breakfast; full-fledged Hainanese-Nyonya menu will be served starting from noon. Penangites have professed their love for Vietnamese food and there's an increase in new Vietnamese restaurants to keep up with the burgeoning demand. Mekong Vietnamese Restaurant is one of the few newly opened Vietnamese joints in Penang. Unlike most Vietnamese restaurants, Mekong takes on a more sophisticated approach. The restaurant has a proper setting sans the Vietnamese frills, it did not create a very "Vietnamese" atmosphere but the Vietnamese-focused menu proven otherwise (we believe the restaurant is manned by Vietnamese). It has all the signature Vietnamese dishes that any Malaysian can possibly name; price points are however, higher than expected. Also, the restaurant is still new and do expect some delays with the food orders.

Private Kitchen is gaining its popularity in Penang, especially when you want to cut the mainstream restaurants or over-rated franchised brands out there and proceed straight to the basic, traditional flavors; or merely satisfy the particular urge to have some classic home-cooked dishes. While Great Delight Kitchen (悦为食) may operate like an ordinary restaurant, it actually runs on a business model like Private Kitchen. Customization of menu can be arranged with prior notice- simply inform the proprietor on the budget and they are able to customize the menu accordingly. The server proudly shared with us that the existing Teo Chew-influenced menu only covers 5% of what the restaurant could actually offer; as long as you can name it, they can cook it. Tables are limited and with its strong customer base, it is highly recommended that you make advance booking before visiting the place (we visited 3 times without booking and were turned down). The damage for this meal was slightly over RM 100 (for 3 pax), not exactly a cheap meal but we were pleased with the quality.

The Pad Thai Seafood (RM 8.90) was impressive. It shares almost 70% similarities with the Pad Thai we had in Bangkok and the heat component was no joke. It put our mouth on fire and we had to take small pauses in between to give some resting period for our tongue.

The F&B scene in Penang does not sound like it will be slowing down for the new year of 2017, there are quite a number of new restaurants to put on radar. Foodies may have noticed this eye-catchy building at the corner of Hutton Lane, right next to New World Park. The exterior of the restaurant is painted in orange color, with a few bright spotlights in action. The name "Green Bell" surely does not ring a bell... at least not for us. Green Bell has quite an extensive menu, offering a vast selection of Western-Fusion dishes, though most of them are priced reasonably, the dishes lacked the excitement when it comes to quality... as though it was just an ordinary restaurant in the neighborhood. Food-aside, the service on our visit was lackluster; for a few simple orders, it took them more than one hour to serve and the restaurant was not even half-full.

Being a steamboat-obsessed community, Penangites welcome all sorts of steamboat or hotpots; evidently seen from the forever-increasing steamboat restaurants in town. Red Stone Hotpot is one of the new members that pays homage to the tongue-numbing Sze Chuan hotpot but their concept of serving Hotpot is unusual and distinctive. Unlike its competitors, Red Stove does not serve the soup/ food as it is; instead, the Chef cooks in front of you... from scratch. Dining here is like being at a cook show. The Chef prepares the ingredients and starts the cooking process in front of the diners... from cooking until seasoning, diners get to witness the entire process. Commendable is the use of effective tools to shield the oil from spilling over to diners. The flavors are good but not mind-blowingly amazing but it is definitely a fun place to visit for the novelty experience.

On the mains, we had both Pan Seared Norwegian Salmon and Australian Grain Fed Beef Tenderloin; the former one was safe choice with pretty simple and straight-forward flavors, the latter option on the other hand, was beyond amazing. It probably outshined the Salmon, the Tenderloin was melt-in-the-mouth tender. The red meat was carefully cooked to the right doneness with spot-on seasoning and a burst of delightful meat juice. This is definitely one of the best Beef around.

Patois Kafe & Bistro has got to be the most curious restaurant in Penang ever, the place is usually closed and only opens during certain hours. We have made multiple attempts to visit the place but to no avail. Dining in Patois is quite an experience, the menu is small but the service is amiable. We were warmly greeted by a charming-motherly lady; she was concerned if we knew what to order (since it was our first visit), if we were comfortably seated and if the air-conditioner was blowing at the right temperature. We were certainly well-taken care of. The place is unpretentious sans the unnecessary frills, it feels exactly dining at home. Service and ambiance aside, the European-Fusion menu is standard-average with some hits and misses. Patois Kafe & Bistro is located at Service Road, off Burmah Road (right next to Chow Thye Road).

More and more China Chinese Steamboat/ Hot Pot restaurants sprung up in Penang recently, Chuan Style Steamboat occupies a prominent spot at Bagan Jermal (T-junction of Mount Erskine and Burmah Road). The restaurant has huge posters on "Sze Chuan Face-Changing Opera" (变脸) and it does not take long for one to figure out what type of cuisine they are serving. The selections here are huge, ranging from the classic Sze Chuan Spicy Hot Pot to some uncommon Soups as well as some familiar Sze Chuan dishes. But most diners are here for its Hot Pot; the price points are however, not as wallet-friendly as budget-watchers would have hoped. A standard meal here is easily more than Rm 50 per pax so the place is more for occasions in lieu of regular meals.

With a name like Viva La Pasta, one would expect to see a heavy Italian fare in this newly opened restaurant. It is housed within the new budget hotel- iStay Hotel in the heart of Georgetown. Step in the cafe and you will be pleasantly amazed by how cozy the place is. While every effort was made to ensure the place lives up to the classy Italian theme but we did not think the Italian element was strong enough. In fact, we spotted a wallpaper with Chinese characters. On the menu, it offers quite a wide variety of Italian fare, ranging from Antipasto, Pizza, Pasta, Grills and even classic Italian desserts. Very wallet-friendly price points but as far as authenticity is concerned, we thought the flavors have been localized to suit the local audience.

The Mermaid's Signature Stingray has bold flavors and might be a little overly bold on its own but perfectly well over a spoon of Rice. The edges were carefully grilled to a crisp while the inner flesh remains its moist. Any order with the Signature Stingray will be served with a portion of the quintessential refreshing Chili dip. It was good but we were not blown away. For a Western-twist, we had Grouper Steak with Home-made Pesto Sauce and it was served with Mashed Potato and Corn Niblets. The thickly cut Fish possessed the most satisfying meaty-bite but the Pesto Sauce was a little too heavy on the seasoning... it would be better if they could reduce the salinity. If you are neither a fan of the old-school Sambal sauce nor the vegetal Pesto, you may opt for Garlic Butter... which will be served with Wedges and Salad.

Silver Spoon knows their Pesto Sauce well, the flavors were amazing; the herbaceous element was there, complemented with rich, cream-based sauce. A pity that the Spaghetti was over-cooked though we enjoyed the sauce a lot. It's hard to find Rib Eye Steak that costs below Rm 50 in Penang but as expected, the cut was a lackluster. Though the Red Wine sauce was beautifully done, the texture of the meat was somewhat disappointing. The meat was rough and the bite was less-satisfying. The Rib Eye Steak was served with a side of Potato Au Gratin and some greens. All in all, we have no complaints given the promotional rates but for usual rates, we thought they could do better.

The machine is extremely easy to operate, even first timer like us can easily fill up a cup. Since the machine fill up the cup from bottom hence it reduce expose to air and create less bubble, it make the beer taste much more smooth. It's uncommon for Gurney Drive to have new restaurants, the seafront promenade already has a spate of well-established cafes and restaurants. Sea Brew is a rare occasion; previously a hawker place and now turned into a cozy Cafe-Bar space. The facade is inviting, with wide and bright entrance; Sea Brew comes across as a cafe due to its setting but amazingly, the bewilder menu comprises of Steamboat Hot Pot, Western Cuisine and some home-made sweet treats, with options of alcoholic beverages (big menu but not all were available on our visit). But a meal here costs a bomb, expect to pay at least Rm 30 for a main course; while we did enjoy the relaxed atmosphere with soothing sea breeze, we thought the food quality did not quite well-justify the hefty price tags.

It's hard to miss Ji Bao Wang (鸡煲王), not only does the strategic location (at the corner of Larut Road to Hutton Lane and Burmah Road, next to KFC Larut Road or opposite to Hotel Royal Penang) gives the restaurant an edge in exposure, the playful-catchy banner that says "我要叫鸡" has caught a lot of attention as well (shall not be translated into English). As the tagline may suggest, the place specializes in serving various types of Chicken Hot Pot but the signature dish here is the Sze Chuan-influenced Chicken Hot Pot. The dining concept is somewhat interesting- diners will be served a ready-to-eat Chicken Hot Pot, hot soup will then be added when you are done. It then becomes Steamboat and diners may now adjourn to the display fridges to pick up the preferred ingredients to be added to the soup (prices vary according to the colors of the plates). The interior decor is modern and chic but with a touch of China Chinese flair. Price points are high but the quality is less-satisfying, the authenticity is missing (lackluster service and below-par quality, pretty disappointing). Ironically, we then found out that this place is a sister restaurant to Chong Qing Steamboat (at Kelawei Road).
