Navigation skills are important to locate Super Crab Aroma Seafood Restaurant (蟹王香海鲜饭店), a 2 year old restaurant branched from Petaling Jaya. The restaurant well-hidden at the residential neighborhood of Sungai Ara specializes in serving Crabs and Seafood dishes. Choices are aplenty here (Malaysian-Chinese chu char dishes) but some might not be available so it is best to call to make reservation in advance. For crabs, the restaurant offers more than 12 serving methods but the signature remains as the Malaysian classic Chili Crabs; subject to availability, the restaurant offers Super Crabs as well... with each crab weighs more than 900 grams. Price points are of upper-middle but the wide variety is set to please, the air-conditioned restaurant can be a good choice as a casual family dining spot. To find Super Crab Aroma Seafood Restaurant, turn into the junction right in front of Hope Children on Jalan Dato Ismail Hashim and go straight (via Persiaran Relau) until you almost hit another junction, the restaurant can be found on the left... tucked in a semi-detached corner unit (previously Cherry Blossom Thai Restaurant for those who are in the know).

We enjoyed the way how the Maggi was fried - slightly wet and fried with egg, nice seasoning and topped with a round egg, which egg yolks ooze upon probing it. To our surprise, the fried maggi noodle also served along with a few slices of fried fish fillets.

Stir-fried yellow noodles with clams is simplistic. Done with a pleasantly sweet taste of clams and mild zingy ginger kick, the noodle is served with accompanying spicy sambal.

There are many other selections recommended by the crew, namely kappa, sotong and etc but we had a Butter Mantis Prawn (RM 12) instead. The creamy and sleekness were well balanced, giving a rich taste if you take the sauce to complement the white rice.

The 3-flavored Black Pomfret did not impress us from the appearance but it was in fact, skillfully cooked. The flesh was moist and soft while the outer parts of the fish were deep fried to a crisp... slathered with a sweet-savory sauce. It can be dangerously addictive to munch on the crisp sides of the fish or to enjoy the meaty-bite with Rice

The Braised Pork On Rice (RM 4.00) in the menu immediately caught our attention. As the name suggests, this simple dish has piece of small braised pork topping the white rice, with its gravy diffuses into the rice slightly. The braised pork has decent proportion of lean and fatty meat, giving a pleasant and not surfeiting greasy feeling but it lacks the potent effect.

This new kid on the block- Bei Tou Squid Snack (北投鱿鱼), a brand originates from Taiwan that serves fast-casual Taiwanese food; is housed at a quiet corner of The Golden Triangle at Relau, the Taiwanese chain brought along some of the special highlights directly from Taiwan. Unlike most Taiwanese joints around, Bei Tou does not offer a big menu but a series of carefully chosen Taiwanese delights.... so the indecisive will not be overwhelmed by selections. Notable highlights are Taiwanese street-snacks like Dumplings, Scallion Pancakes, braised Tofu, thickened Soup; often ordered over Rice or Noodles. Price points are low-middle range but serving portion is relatively small.

A famed fishing village at Southwest of Penang Island (approximately 15 km away from Balik Pulau market), Pulau Betong is home to many fishermen and is known to have some of the best sea produce in Penang. Jia Siang Cafe is one of the more prominent seafood restaurants in the vicinity; having operated for years, it has accumulated an appreciate following. But there is a catch here- you must either reach there early during the day (as soon as it opens) or you will have to buy the fresh sea produce behind the restaurant (for the Chefs to cook). The seafood supplies in the restaurant are rather limited and the demand is usually high, so if you wish to savor some of the best seafood, make your way there as early as possible. Located at the end of the road, Jia Siang Cafe is right next to the river mouth; not air-conditioned, the heat-intolerant might this place a little uncomfortable to dine-in, especially with the sultry hot tropical weather.

Aqua Green Restaurant

Pearl Fish Farm, Off Pulau Jerejak, Penang (Gather Point at Batu Uban Fisherman's Village)

  • kenhuntfood.com
  • 2017-01-16 00:00:00+00:00
Dining in the middle of the sea is no longer a dream nor imaginary right now as one of the largest fish farms in Penang- Aqua Green runs a private kitchen that opens to the public. At a very reasonable price of Rm 120 nett per diner, diners will be welcomed with 5-6 course lunch (subject to availability) and the price includes return trip to the fish farm from Batu Uban Fishing Village. Food aside, we thought the real pull factor was the breath-taking scenery and once-in-a-life-time experience; I mean... how often do you get to visit a fish farm and have a healthy, home-cooked meal there? For those who are concerned, the fish farm is rather "stable" and not "wavy". The open-space dining hall welcomes soothing sea-breeze and offers spectacular view over the Sea (with a side facing Pulau Jerejak). Diners will also receive a complimentary tour around the fish farm while the owner- Sean Cheah, will explain to you how Aqua Green raises the fish. The meal will start shortly after the tour and shall include healthy dishes churned out from Sean's wife- Doris' kitchen; diners can expect at least a fish dish (farmed by Sean) and several healthy dishes (Doris only supports organic and sustainable farmers in Penang, she will cook whatever the farmers deliver to her on that day, subject to suitability). A minimum 6 pax is required for such booking to Aqua Green and preferably 7-day advance reservation (contact number can be found at the bottom of the article).

The prices for the meal start from RM120nett per person, and all in, we felt it is pretty reasonable for the private kitchen dining experience, ambience and transportation. Wang Thai at All Seasons Place has been serving up Thai food for the residents in the neighborhood for quite some time but recently, there's a stiff competition for Thai food, particularly within the commercial building of All Seasons Place. The new addition- Chang Thai Restaurant is the new venture behind Tomyummy Noodle House. It has plenty of Thai-influenced dishes to offer- from Kerabu to Fried Fritters, Tom Yum, Seafood and classic stir fry dishes. But prices are on the higher side and the food quality is merely passable-satisfactory.

Korean food in the Jelutong neighborhood might be a scarce for the past but not now with the opening of a new Korean joint- Sigsa Korean Restaurant, housed under the new commercial building- Straits Garden. The Korean restaurant serves classic Korean staples such as Barbecues, Hotpots, Stews, Tteokbokki, Korean Noodles and Rice dishes. It has the standard Korean restaurant setting meant for barbecue (sans the good ventilation system), cleverly covered in wooden furnishing. We did not get to sample a lot of their dishes but from what we had, they were of standard-average quality... nothing more and nothing less than an average Korean restaurant; but prices are slightly higher than average.

They started out at Perak Road, right next to Old Town White Coffee, subsequently to Reservoir Garden Air Itam and now, a new shop at The Golden Triangle, Relau. It may be shadowed by those flashy food eateries in the vicinity so do be extra careful when searching for this place. The well-received help-yourself concept of Tom Yum is being taken to a different level at Super One Pot Restaurant, Bukit Bendera; it plays a brilliant bet on food presentation. The name might have suggested how... all self-picked ingredients are cooked then served in a small pot... individually. But that's all we reckon, variety is pretty standard-average here (with reasonable prices), with one or two special add ons such as Lor Bak, Pork Chop and Grilled Shrimps. If I must recommend one item, it would be their fiery hot Tom Yum. The main reason why regular patrons keep coming back to Foong Yean has got nothing to do with the dining atmosphere- though fully air-conditioned, the ventilation seems to be weak inside; they come back for the consistently delicious food, at unbeatable rates. The decade-old Cantonese Restaurant has quite a variety of dishes to offer- from the classic Cantonese stir fry to local-Malaysian cuisine; whether you are in a celebratory mood or just drop by over a casual meal, it has something for you. Foong Yean has always been the de-facto Chinese restaurant to visit in Bayan Lepas, especially for the Chinese investors/ management working in the organizations nearby the industrial zone. The year end rainy season is surely an unexpected encounter; as temperature drops, the urge to have something comforting and tummy-warming gets stronger. One of the best ways to warm the body up is to enjoy a sumptuous Hot Pot. New kid on the block- Zhong Sheng Bowl Soup Hot Pot (一碗汤) housed in one of the shop houses opposite to Queensbay Mall; offers an array of Chinese healthy Hot Pots. The whole place is very "Chinese"... whether the interior decor (Chinese wooden tables, chairs and wallpapers... even the background music) to the menu or even the servers. It appears that the soup bases for the Hot Pots are carefully crafted to bring medicinal and invigorating effects to the body. The set package for the Hot Pot Soup is great value for the money but some of the additional ingredients may cost a little more; the soup variety here is rather unique and definitely worth a look.

Azlan's Curry Stingray left us with a very deep impression. Unlike the much sought-after thick version, the Curry Stingray may seem watery but the flavors are not weak. The real draw is the silky smooth texture, little effort is required to slit the fish; a great dish to spoon over Rice. Feel like having more fish? Go for their Siakap served with Garlic, Ginger and Soy Sauce- deep fried Siakap topped with Garlic, Ginger and Soy Sauce with a dash of refreshing Lime Juice... crisp texture with powerful flavors; just as you thought it might be a little heavy on the palate, the acidity from the Lime cuts through the greasiness and opens up a refreshing dimension. Equally worth-savory dishes are the grilled Cat Fish and stir-fried Prawns.

The concoction was very inviting and appetizing, a good complement to the fresh fish. Assam Prawns were nothing out of the ordinary, though they possessed the quintessential flavors; the dish just did not manage to hit us but the Prawns were fresh nevertheless. If you are cutting down on Rice, why not try their Singapore Fried Bee Hoon? We thought their Singapore Fried Bee Hoon was good, carefully seasoned and expertly cooked to the right dot. The crunchy elements such as Cabbage and Onions added another layer of juicy bite to the dish. Our only possible complain was the Bee Hoon/ Vermicelli Noodles come in a lump.
