Rice with Roast Pork, BBQ Pork and Roast Chicken at MYR 17 nett. The Roast Chicken breast meat is tender so I like it. They put the Roast Pork on top of a piece of plastic sheet to keep the skin crispy by not soaking up the gravy from the rice. The gravy has a bit of Lap Cheong (wax sausage) taste. Both of us shared this packet of rice for lunch.

My Personal Opinion If you like a more Western-style roast pork belly (compared to the Chinese-style siew yuk) with a deluge of black pepper taste, then you'll surely be delighted with this siew yuk. Many sing its praises as one of the best roast pork in town...not for me though. The super crunchy skin is definitely the highlight and the siew yuk is certainly commendable but not a firm favourite of mine for their more fatty-to-lean ratio and overly tender meat. Having said that, I won't mind returning for their Iberico roast pork (albeit not regularly because of the hefty price). If you love the taste of black pepper, perhaps you should try this siew yuk to determine (for yourself) if you rate it among your favourites.

R06 Char Siew + Roast Chicken Rice, 10.90 ringgit. This was delicious. Yum yum! The char siew was da bomb. A perfect combination of a lil soft from the pork fats at the bottom of each slice and crunchyness from the chewy pork meat at the top. It has BBQ sauce drizzled all over it, yummy and sweet! The roast chicken, yum yum! They had some black pepper drizzled on it, made it all the more delicious. The chicken itself was tender and juicy. Lets just says – both the meat were delicious, one a lil sweet and the other a lil peppery and it complimented the rice + gravy very well. The rice is not the usual thin rice that comes with chicken/char siew rice. The one used here was bigger, larger. I thought it would have been a problem but nope it all gelled well together. Yummy!

Roast Pork (RM 11, small) Since roast pork is the pièce de résistance here, we ordered a separate portion, not wanting to overshadow the roast pork with any rice/noodles with gravy. You can even purchase a 1 KG slab for RM 110 here. So was the roast pork good? I would say that it’s good but definitely not the best in KL. It is very different from the chinese siew yuk that we are familiar with. The keropok like skin reminds me of pork rinds from Indonesia or Thailand. Using a herb marinate, the seasoning is more to the western style of preparation, hence the lack of five spice flavours. Good fats to lean meat ratio too. While I do enjoy the thick pork crackling, certain parts get too hard and sometimes too sticky – you know the feeling where it gets stuck all over your teeth?

Why was the siew yok good? The obvious difference of Boon’s signature roast pork from the common “Chinese” version was the thicker, puffy, pork-croutons lookalike, except that these are still attached to the meat. The overall taste would remind you more of the Western style preparation of roast pork belly, minus five spice powder. The ratio of crunchy skin, soft fats and lean meat was pretty spot-on, fulfilling you with an ideal combination of crunch, juiciness and bite with every piece. I’ve always had issues with roast pork that are overly salty and thus was glad that this wasn’t so. And the rice – I just love it. It was fragrant, not overly greasy and due to the ‘Japanese pearl rice’ (basically better quality than the standard cheap broken rice) served, the grains possessed a nice bite to them.
