Khoon Pastry House is one of the renowned names for pastries and cakes back in the 70's and 80's. In recent years, Khoon Pastry has evolved and has now added Hainanese delicacies to their menu.
Chicken Shepherd's Pie (RM 19.90) is another delicious item here. The classic dish is presented in a beautiful way with wavy appearance, then the mashed potatoes are silky smooth and complemented well with other ingredients. The taste is nice and lightly with a touch of creaminess. Although the shepherd's pie looks like a dessert or a side dish but a piece of it should fulfill your calories load of the day.
这一餐的总结是,每一道餐点我都感到非常的满意! 尤其是Shepherd Pie,更是令人回味无穷,回去后还会念念不忘 所以Khoon Pastry House绝对是一家会让人再次回访的海南特色餐厅喔!
In summary, Khoon Pastry House excels in its chicken rice and pies - clearing the bar by a huge margin. This is not a statement that I take lightly. I highly recommend this bakery whether you are looking for a quick bite of pastry, or for a casual Hainanese-style chicken rice meal.
Hainan people migrated to Malaya from the 19th century onwards. As most jobs like farmers, miners etc. had already been occupied by Chinese from other parts of China who migrated to Malaya earlier, most Hainan people were hired by British families as domestic helpers. This was how many Hainan people learn to make western delicacies.
Khoon Pastry House is not a one-trick pony. Another much lauded item was their Hainanese Chicken Chop (Rm 13.90), it appears to be deceptively simple and ordinary, but the flavors were able to "wow" me, especially the sauce. It was somewhat similar to Brown Sauce, with a unique touch of their own secret recipe and some Italian Herbs. The Chicken, on the other hand, was impressive either. I am not sure if the batter contains Shrimp Paste (Belacan) but it does posses a unique aroma and it was ethereal to go with the sauce. Recommended.
