Ugly Coconut Egg Tart sure is yummy — just like our fathers who may have a hardy exterior but a soft side.
The highlight of the series is the specially commissioned Salted Egg Cookies (180g for S$19), which is created by Louisa Ho, the undisputed Bakery Queen of Hong Kong. This marks the first time the veteran baker is selling her baked goodies overseas.
Overall, the egg tarts offered were a great reminder of what we missed from Hong Kong and with the travel restrictions, it is great to be able to grab some authentic items without getting on a plane.
First opened in August 2020, the teahouse offers the three famous culinary treasures of Hong Kong: egg tarts, pineapple buns, and milk tea. A part of Hong Kong’s food legacy, these three offerings are recognized on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Hong Kong list. Besides the three items, Joy Luck Teahouse also doles out Hong Kong Fish Balls and an array of Hong Kong-style beverages. These items are from notable brands in Hong Kong, lauded by famous celebrities such as Chow Yun-Fat, Liza Wang, Paula Tsui, Wong Cho-Lam , and Dicky Cheung.
Joy Luck Teahouse isn't the only shop bringing in pastries from Hong Kong; Hang Heung specializes in laopobing, among other things.
I was focused on the egg tarts from Hoover Cake Shop, which is allegedly a favorite of Chow Yun-Fat's.
